Start with the charge on your statement, not the list of installed apps. Copy the exact descriptor, amount, date and pending or posted status. Then compare those details with the purchase history and subscriptions for every Google Account or Apple Account that could use the card. If no account matches, the payment may have been made directly to the developer, through an alternative billing system, by a family member, or without authorization.
- Decode the statement descriptor.
- Match the date and amount in Google Play or Apple purchase history.
- Check subscriptions, other accounts and family purchases.
- Cancel future billing and request a refund from the party that processed the payment.
- Contact your card issuer promptly when the charge is unauthorized or cannot be found.
First, inspect the credit-card statement
A statement often shows the billing intermediary instead of the app you remember using. Record these details before searching:
- Exact merchant descriptor
- Amount and currency
- Transaction date
- Whether it is pending or posted
- Whether it repeats monthly, annually or irregularly
- Last four digits of the card (never share the full number)
Common Google Play descriptors
Google Play charges commonly use formats such as GOOGLE*App developer name, GOOGLE*App name or GOOGLE*Content type. The developer name may be unfamiliar even when the app is one you installed. Match the amount and date as well as the wording. Google says a charge that does not use a Google format did not come from Google Play; see Google’s unauthorized-charge guidance.
Common Apple descriptors
Apple charges may appear as apple.com/bill, itunes.com/bill or another Apple Services description. That line can represent an app, in-app purchase, subscription, music, film, book or another Apple service. Apple may group several purchases into one card transaction, and the posting date can differ from the purchase date. The descriptor alone therefore does not identify one app; compare the total with Apple’s records using Apple’s charge-help page and Apple’s unrecognized-services guidance.

Pending is not the same as completed
A small pending amount can be a temporary authorization after a payment method is added. Duplicate pending authorizations may disappear after a few days, depending on the issuer. Do not treat either as a completed app purchase until the status is posted.
Find app charges on Android
Check Google Play order history
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
- Select Payments & subscriptions.
- Open Budget & order history (the wording can vary by device and version).
- Compare each item’s date and amount with the statement.
- Open a matching order to see the app, developer, order details and available support options.
For a broader record of Google services, sign in to Google Payments, open the relevant product or subscription and inspect its transaction list. Google recommends comparing this history with the card statement before reporting a transaction as unauthorized.
Review every Google Play subscription
- In Google Play, tap your profile picture.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Review active, expired, paused and canceled entries.
- Open a subscription to see its renewal date and cancellation control.
Repeat the search for every Google Account used on the phone or by household members. A purchase can belong to an account that is not currently selected in Play.

Android complications
- A family member may have used a shared payment method, including a child’s account.
- A forgotten free trial may have converted to a paid plan; annual renewals are especially easy to miss.
- Some apps support usage-triggered, automatic balance-based purchases that are not ordinary subscriptions. Details are in Google’s automatic-purchase guidance.
- In the United States and certain other markets, an eligible developer may offer an alternative billing system. Those transactions may not appear in normal Play subscription tools; the alternative billing provider handles transaction support. See Google’s alternative-billing explanation.
Find app charges on iPhone or iPad
Use Apple’s purchase-resolution page
- Go to reportaproblem.apple.com.
- Sign in with the Apple Account connected to the purchase.
- Review purchases and subscriptions.
- Match the statement’s amount and date. Check nearby purchases too when Apple has grouped charges.
- Open the item for details, a refund request or a problem report when available.
Check subscriptions in Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name or Apple Account banner.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Review active and expired plans.
- Select a plan to see renewal terms and cancellation controls.
Labels can vary slightly by iOS version, language and device. You must use the Apple Account that owns the subscription.

When Purchase Sharing is enabled, the family organizer can review charges by selecting the relevant family member in Apple’s account selector. Ask that person before calling a known household purchase fraud. Also search every Apple Account email inbox for “Your receipt from Apple,” the exact amount, app name and renewal notices.
Apple Card users can inspect Apple Services transactions in Wallet. On the latest available iOS or iPadOS, details may include the purchase, date, time and transaction status.

When the charge is missing from store history
Absence from Google Play or Apple history does not prove fraud. Work through these possibilities:
- Another account: Check old Google or Apple Accounts, accounts on a previous phone and family members’ accounts.
- Direct developer billing: You may have subscribed on the company’s website. Search email for the descriptor, amount, date, receipt and renewal terms, then sign in to the developer’s account portal.
- Alternative billing: A Google Play app may have used an eligible non-Play billing provider.
- Grouped or delayed posting: Apple may combine purchases, and either platform’s posting date can differ from the purchase date.
- Pending authorization: Wait for the status to resolve before treating it as a completed charge.
- Fraud: If no account, family member or merchant recognizes a posted charge, involve the card issuer.
Contact a developer only when the descriptor clearly points to that developer. If the transaction was not processed by the app store, the store generally cannot cancel or refund it.

Cancel future charges
Google Play billing
Open Google Play → profile picture → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions, select the plan and cancel it. Verify that the status says canceled or non-renewing, and save the confirmation. Cancellation stops future renewals; it does not automatically refund past purchases. Check the next card statement.

Apple billing
Use Settings → your Apple Account → Subscriptions, select the plan and cancel it, or manage it through Apple’s account tools. Cancellation and a refund are separate actions; request a refund through Apple’s purchase-resolution page.
Developer-direct billing
Cancel in the developer’s website account or contact its support team. Uninstalling an app does not cancel a subscription controlled by a billing account. Replacing a card also may not stop every recurring merchant payment, so confirm the result with your issuer.

- For Google Play purchases, use Google’s refund-policy and request guidance. Google also describes reporting windows for unrecognized transactions at its unrecognized-charge page; its stated 120-day window for credit, debit or PayPal transactions is a Google support rule, not a guarantee or your card issuer’s dispute deadline.
- For Apple purchases, sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com and follow the refund workflow.
- For direct or alternative billing, contact that billing provider or developer.
Do not describe a recognized family purchase as fraud merely to obtain a refund. Keep receipts, screenshots and case numbers.
Distinguish a forgotten purchase from fraud
More likely valid or accidental
- It appears in the matching Google or Apple history.
- Date and amount align, or Apple history shows several purchases totaling the charge.
- A family member confirms it.
- It is a known renewal, free-trial conversion or temporary pending authorization.
More likely unauthorized
- No controlled account or household member matches it.
- The charge is posted and not merely pending.
- The descriptor is neither a matching platform charge nor a known developer.
- Charges continue after confirmed cancellation.
- Several unrelated transactions appear close together.
What to do when fraud is suspected
- Call the number on the back of the card or use the issuer’s official app.
- Ask whether to lock or replace the card and stop recurring merchant payments.
- File the issuer’s unauthorized-transaction dispute.
- Change the relevant Google or Apple Account password and enable multifactor authentication.
- Remove unfamiliar payment methods, review signed-in devices and inspect recent account activity.
- Check other cards and accounts for related charges.
- Keep screenshots, emails, dates and claim numbers.
Platform reporting and card-issuer reporting are separate. Contacting Google or Apple does not replace notifying the issuer, and you should not wait for another renewal if the card appears compromised.
