How to find games you are likely to enjoy
Steam’s catalog is too large to browse without a plan. PC Gamer reported, citing SteamDB, that 44,048 games were priced under $5 during the sale on October 1, 2026. That is a dated snapshot, not a live count or a Valve figure. Use Steam’s store filters to narrow results by genre, features, release date, user rating, and review count, then assess the games that fit your interests.
- Begin with play style: Search for genres and features you already enjoy rather than treating the largest discount as a recommendation.
- Use reviews as a filter: Consider both rating and review count; a high score from a small number of reviews offers a different signal from a similar score across many reviews.
- Make a shortlist: Wishlist games you may want. PC Gamer recommends wishlisting as a way to receive sale notifications and keep purchases focused.
Valve says seasonal sales are open to released games. A discount of 20% or more can trigger an email notification for users who have wishlisted a title and opted in. How to tell whether a sale price is actually low
Check the price in your own Steam region and currency, then compare it with the game’s price history. SteamDB’s live deal rating is based on the discount percentage, while its price-history pages show the lowest price captured during its tracking window and log price changes. The historical low is therefore a recorded low for that window and region—not necessarily the lowest price the game has ever had everywhere. SteamDB sales and price tools.
- Open the game’s Steam store page and note the current price and discount for your region.
- Look up the same game on SteamDB and check its regional price history, including the period covered by the chart.
- Compare the current price with the recorded low. If the current price is above that low, decide whether the difference is worth paying now or whether you would rather wait.
- Check the Steam listing again before checkout. Sale prices and availability are time-sensitive.
A discount percentage describes the reduction from a reference price; it does not by itself tell you whether the offer beats a past sale. For example, GamesRadar+ listed Total War: Warhammer III at $8.99 in the US and £7.49 in the UK, with an 85% discount, in its October 2026 roundup. Examples from the sale—and what they do and do not show
A roundup can help surface games to investigate, but a broad “best games” list is not necessarily tailored to your tastes or budget. GamesRadar+ said its writer spent more than seven hours exploring the store and selected acclaimed games, genre favorites, and indies. That describes the publication’s editorial approach, not independent testing of every recommendation.

Use the deadline without letting it drive the decision
The announced sale ends October 8 at 10 a.m. Pacific. Add likely purchases to your wishlist, compare the prices that matter to you, and buy only the games you genuinely want at prices you consider worthwhile. A deadline can help you decide when to revisit a shortlist; it cannot make an unwanted game a good purchase.
