Where to look for the sender’s name
Open the parcel carefully and check the packing slip, gift receipt and any message included with the gift. Also check inside gift-wrap envelopes or other inserts. A gift message may name the person who sent it, and Amazon UK says a gift order can include a packing slip “so the recipient knows who sent it.” Its guidance is specific to Amazon.co.uk; gift options and wording can differ by marketplace. That information may not be present. A buyer may not have selected gift options or supplied identifying details, and Amazon’s official instructions do not promise a universal way for recipients to look up a gift sender or obtain the giver’s identity from support. A name or address shown as the shipping address on a slip is not necessarily the giver’s own return address.
What to do if the package does not identify the sender
- Ask people who might have sent it. Check with friends and family before treating an unfamiliar parcel as unsolicited; Amazon recommends this step. Amazon: Report Unsolicited Packages or Brushing Scams
- If nobody recognizes it, report it to Amazon. Use Amazon’s Report Unwanted Package form for a package addressed to you that you did not order and that is not a gift. Amazon says third-party sellers are prohibited from sending unsolicited packages. It describes “brushing” as packages sent to names and addresses that are publicly available.
- Keep the parcel’s tracking number. Note how many unwanted packages arrived as well; Amazon lists these details as useful when contacting Customer Service.
If you received a message about an unexpected Amazon order
A text or email is not proof that a package was sent or that the message came from Amazon. Do not click its links, reply with personal or payment information, or follow urgent instructions. Open Amazon’s app or type its website address yourself, then check Your Orders. To verify an email, check Amazon’s Message Center; Amazon says messages that do not appear there were not sent by Amazon. Should you scan a QR code on the package?
No—not to reveal the sender or start a return. The FTC warned in January 2025 that scammers may put QR codes on unexpected-package notes claiming a scan will identify the sender or explain how to return the item. Possibly. Amazon says the gift’s 17-digit order number appears on the packing slip or digital gift receipt and can be used for a return. If you have tracking information but no slip or receipt, Amazon advises contacting Customer Service. The order number is for handling a return; it is not a way to identify the buyer.
