Both can provide free digital textbooks, but neither guarantees that your assigned book, edition, homework system, or access code is available at no cost. Verify the match before substituting a resource or paying for an add-on.
Start with the assigned book, not just the course subject
Before searching, write down the textbook’s exact title, author, edition, and any required access code or homework platform from the syllabus. A free book on the same subject may use a different edition or chapter sequence, so it may not fit the course’s readings and assignments.

- Check OpenStax’s subject catalog. Search for the exact title and open the individual book page to confirm the edition and available formats. OpenStax covers several common subjects, but its catalog does not include every assigned book. Browse OpenStax subjects.
- Look in LibreTexts. Search for the title and compare its author, edition, and contents with the syllabus. A subject match alone is not enough to confirm that it meets your course requirements.
- Ask before substituting. If the assigned book is missing or the edition differs, check with your instructor. OpenStax also recommends asking your campus library or bookstore when it does not carry the requested title. Those offices may help identify an approved alternative.
What OpenStax and LibreTexts offer
| Resource | Book access and formats | Accounts and paid tools | Course match |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenStax | Its titles are available online and as free PDFs. Optional print editions are available for purchase; format options vary by title. | Most books can be read online without signing in. Some titles may require an account; notes and highlighting require a student account. OpenStax Assignable is paid courseware, not a requirement for reading the free textbook. | Check the specific title and edition against the syllabus. OpenStax does not carry every book. |
| LibreTexts | LibreTexts states that textbook access is free. Confirm that the particular book fits the course. | Some separate services, including ADAPT homework and Jupyter Hub, can cost extra. A charge for a tool is not the same as a charge to read a textbook. | Confirm with the instructor if the course requires a particular text, edition, or platform. |
Check formats, account requirements, and accessibility
On OpenStax, check the book’s own page for online and PDF access, any sign-in requirement, and supported features. Most books can be read online without an account, but some titles—including a small number of nursing books—may require one. An account is needed for features such as notes and highlighting.
OpenStax also describes built-in or device-based reading support, Bookshare formats for several titles, and audiobook options for selected books. These are not available for every title. If you need a specific accessibility format or feature, verify it on the exact book page before relying on it.

Separate the free book from optional costs
A digital textbook can be free while a related product is not. LibreTexts distinguishes free textbook access from paid services such as ADAPT homework and Jupyter Hub. OpenStax Assignable is also paid courseware; it is separate from the free digital textbook and should not be treated as necessary for reading it. Check the syllabus or ask the instructor whether a paid tool is actually required for graded work.
If reading on paper works better for you, OpenStax sells low-cost print editions, but the printed copy is optional when the free digital version meets your needs. OpenStax mentions Amazon as a hard-copy route on a K–12 page; that does not establish that every college title or edition is listed there. Verify the exact book and edition before buying from any seller.

What to do if you cannot find a free match
- Ask your instructor whether a different edition or an open textbook is acceptable, especially if course assignments rely on a specific chapter sequence or online platform.
- Check with the campus library and bookstore for the assigned edition or an approved alternative.
- Before paying for an access code or courseware, confirm whether it is required for the class and whether it is separate from textbook access.
Free online textbooks can reduce the cost of course materials when the right title is available, but a free book should not be assumed to replace a required text or paid assignment platform. The syllabus and instructor are the best checks for whether a particular resource will work for your class.
