Use SAM.gov Contract Awards to find who received a federal construction contract, then use USAspending.gov to examine award transactions and reported financial changes. For actual construction schedules and site progress, check the responsible agency’s project page or office: award and spending records are not a universal, real-time construction tracker.
Find the contract award in SAM.gov
SAM.gov is the current public search location for federal contract award data. The General Services Administration says public-facing FPDS functionality transitioned to SAM.gov, and FPDS ezSearch was decommissioned on February 24, 2026. SAM.gov’s Contract Award Data search lets users search by keyword, agency, and legal business name. A SAM.gov account is required to view search results, but GSA says no particular role is needed for public data.
- Open SAM.gov and choose Contract Awards.
- Search using the project name or a distinctive phrase, the contractor’s legal business name, an agency name, a solicitation or notice identifier, or the PIID if you have it.
- Refine results with available filters, such as agency, awardee, or set-aside. When the record is connected to an opportunity or subcontract report, follow those links for additional context.
- Open the award record and note its identifier and reported amount. Confirm the record is an award; a solicitation or opportunity is not proof that a contract was awarded.
For repeat searches and downloadable reporting, SAM.gov points users to its Data Bank and to Open.gsa contracting-data APIs. Identify the fields you need first, and keep the award identifier so you can match later transaction records to the same contract.
Follow reported changes in USAspending.gov
USAspending.gov is useful for filtering federal award and transaction records and putting a contract in broader spending context. Search or filter by time period, location, agency, recipient, award description, award amount, NAICS, or product/service code. Open the individual award’s transaction history to review reported modifications rather than relying on a single search-result amount.

Obligations are commitments, not completed work
An obligation is a federal spending commitment. An outlay is money paid. Neither figure, on its own, shows that construction has started, reached a milestone, or been completed. A transaction or contract modification is a reported financial or contractual change; it is not necessarily a physical-progress update.

Records may arrive after the underlying action
The Congressional Research Service’s April 22, 2025 report says agencies generally are required to report award transactions within 30 days after implementation, while Department of Defense data may have a longer lag, generally 90 days. These are general reporting expectations, not guaranteed refresh times for an individual award. CRS also notes data-quality issues in USAspending, so cross-check important findings against the SAM.gov record and agency announcements.

A practical way to monitor one project
- Find and verify the award in SAM.gov, recording its PIID or other award identifier and the agency and contractor names.
- Search the identifier or award details in USAspending.gov and review the transaction history for reported changes.
- Check place of performance to confirm the record corresponds to the project location rather than merely the recipient’s address.
- For a significant change or a question about on-site progress, compare the record with the responsible agency’s project announcements or contact its project office.
- For ongoing monitoring, use the government portal’s available reporting or API resources, retaining the identifier to match later records.
