- Open the AFDC Station Locator. Choose the biodiesel-specific station page or the main Alternative Fueling Station Locator.
- Enter a place or trip. Search using a city, ZIP or postal code, street address, or a route, depending on the locator option you use. For a trip, map the route rather than searching only around your starting point.
- Review the results on the map or list. Compare the stations’ listed blends, access, status, distance or route position, and contact details where available.
- Check whether you can use the station. A public listing is different from a private or restricted-access site. Confirm the station is open to you and operating before planning a stop.
- Call the station. Ask whether it is dispensing the exact blend you need today, whether the pump is available to the public, and what its hours are.
- Check your vehicle’s permitted blend. Consult the owner’s manual or ask the vehicle manufacturer before fueling with a blend above the vehicle’s approved limit.
AFDC describes the locator as supporting searches for public and private biodiesel stations. Its main tool defaults to available, publicly accessible stations, while advanced filters can expose other categories, including private and planned listings. Treat the filters as a way to broaden a search—not as proof that every result is a usable retail stop.

If a search returns few or no candidates, check what you entered and which filters are active before concluding that there is no option nearby. A narrow search around one address may not reveal stations farther along a trip, while an access or status filter can remove listings that might be relevant for a fleet or other authorized user. The locator is most useful when the search area, route, blend, and access needs match the stop you are trying to plan.
How to judge whether a station listing is useful
A station result is a directory record, not a reservation or real-time inventory check. AFDC’s station data are powered by the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR), and the documented station fields help you assess whether a result is worth pursuing. They do not establish that the exact fuel is in a tank or at a pump at the moment you arrive.
Read the record as a set of separate clues rather than relying on one label. The blend tells you what type of biodiesel is listed; access and status tell you whether the site may serve your purpose; and the phone number and record dates help you follow up. None of those items alone confirms that the station can sell the fuel to you at the time you need it.

Check the blend first
Look for the listed biodiesel blend and compare it with the fuel you need. B20 means 20% biodiesel and 80% petroleum diesel, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s January 2026 publication. A station listing for one blend should not be treated as confirmation that it sells another blend. Ask by the specific blend designation when you call.
The biodiesel-specific page focuses on B20 and above. If you are looking for a lower blend, a missing result on that page does not establish that no such fuel is sold in the area; it means the page’s stated coverage may not match what you searched for. Likewise, a listing for a B20-and-above location does not tell you that every blend in that range is available there. Confirm the exact product and blend with the station.
Check access and operating status
Station records can identify access and status. NLR’s documented status categories include Available, Planned, and Temporarily Unavailable; records for planned or temporarily unavailable sites may also include an expected date. An Available status is useful context, but it is not the same as confirmation of today’s fuel inventory. A private station may not admit the general public, and a planned site is not a current fueling option.
Access matters differently depending on who is searching. A private listing may be relevant to a fleet or an authorized organization, but it should not be assumed to be open to an individual driver. If the access details are unclear, contact the site and ask whether you are permitted to fuel there. A planned or temporarily unavailable entry may help explain a future or interrupted listing, but it should not be counted as a dependable stop unless the station confirms it is operating and accessible.

Look at confirmation and update dates
Where the station record displays them, check the date last confirmed and the updated-at timestamp. These dates tell you when the listing was confirmed or updated in the directory; they do not indicate when the fuel was last checked or guarantee that a pump is working now. The locator’s records are most useful when read together with the station’s phone number and a direct call.
NLR also documents an overall last-updated date endpoint for the station data. That is useful context for understanding the age of the directory data as a whole, but it does not replace a station-specific call and should not be confused with a live check of tanks or pumps. A recent overall update, station confirmation, or record timestamp is a freshness clue—not an inventory promise.
Compare the practical cost of a stop
When several results appear, weigh the exact listed blend and access status against the station’s location on your route, its hours, and the likelihood that you can reach someone to confirm availability. A station close to your destination may still be a poor choice if it requires a substantial detour or is not public. A farther station along your route may be more useful if the listing fits your fuel requirement and the station confirms it by phone.
For a practical comparison, consider the detour in time and distance, not just the map’s straight-line proximity. Also consider whether the station’s hours line up with your arrival and whether you can get an answer about the exact blend before committing to the stop. The locator information described here does not provide a guaranteed live inventory or a fuel-price comparison, so confirm availability—and any price information you need—with the station directly.

Call the station before leaving your route, especially when the stop would add time or distance. A clear question is more useful than asking only whether the station “has biodiesel,” because the answer may depend on the blend and whether the pump is open to you.
- “Are you dispensing B20 (or the specific blend I need) today?”
- “Is that pump currently available to the public, or is access restricted?”
- “What are your hours today, and will the pump be available when I arrive?”
- “Has anything changed with the fuel or pump availability since the listing was last confirmed?”
If you will arrive later, ask whether the station expects to be open and dispensing that blend at your estimated arrival time. If your trip or timing changes, call again: a confirmation describes what the station tells you at that moment, not a guarantee that conditions will remain unchanged. For cold-weather travel, ask the fuel provider about the fuel’s cold-weather performance as well.
These questions are practical confirmation steps, not additional locator data. The directory and API documentation describe station details, status, contact information, and record dates; the reviewed documentation does not say AFDC tracks live biodiesel pump inventory. A listing therefore helps you find and assess a possible stop, while the station is the source to contact about same-day availability.

Finding biodiesel along a route
For a road trip or delivery route, search the route in the main locator rather than relying only on a search near your starting location. Inspect the results for the listed blend and access type, then call the stations that would be practical stops. A route result shows a possible location; it does not ensure that the station will have the right fuel or be open when you arrive.
- Set the trip in the locator. Use the route-search option and review the stations returned along or near the drive.
- Sort candidates by suitability, not just proximity. First remove any station whose access or status makes it unusable. Then compare listed blend, route position, hours, and contact details.
- Confirm likely stops directly. Ask each candidate whether the required blend is being dispensed on the day you expect to arrive and whether the site will be open.
- Recheck if your timing changes. A call confirms what the station tells you at that time; it is not a guarantee against a later change in stock or operating conditions.
When more than one station could work, compare the whole stop: how far it is from the route, whether access is public or otherwise authorized, whether the listed blend meets your need, and whether the hours fit. A route search helps surface options that a search only near your starting point could miss, but the returned stations still need to be screened against your actual trip and confirmed with the station.

Make sure the blend is right for your vehicle
Finding a station that lists a blend does not mean that blend is approved for your vehicle. DOE’s January 2026 publication says every diesel vehicle manufacturer approves blends up to B5, and nearly 80% approve blends up to B20 in some or all of their diesel vehicles. That is a broad DOE-published estimate, not a compatibility decision for an individual vehicle. The same publication notes that some manufacturers approve B100 in certain farm equipment; that statement should not be generalized to passenger vehicles or other equipment.
In other words, the general approval figures are background, not a substitute for the instructions for your particular vehicle. If the listing offers a blend above the limit you know your vehicle permits, do not assume that broad manufacturer statistics make it suitable. Verify the exact vehicle’s permitted blend before fueling.

Cold-weather and maintenance considerations
Biodiesel’s cold-weather performance varies with the blend percentage and the fuels used in the blend. DOE’s November 2021 Consumer Guide advises checking with the fuel provider about cold-weather performance. If you expect cold conditions, ask the station or fuel provider about the fuel’s suitability for the conditions along your route rather than assuming all biodiesel blends behave alike.

The same DOE guide explains that biodiesel’s solvent effect can loosen deposits left by prior petroleum-diesel use. Those deposits can initially clog filters; the guide says this issue is less common with B20 and lower-level blends. This is a possible effect, not a reason to assume that every driver needs a replacement filter. Follow the vehicle maker’s maintenance guidance and seek advice specific to the vehicle if you have concerns.

No stations appear
Try a broader location search or a route search, and check whether filters are limiting the results. The biodiesel-specific AFDC page covers B20 and above in the United States and Canada, so a search for a lower blend may not produce a result on that page. A missing result does not establish that no supplier exists in the area; it means the locator did not return one for the search and filters you used.
A result is private, planned, or temporarily unavailable
Do not treat every map marker as a public, operating pump. Review access and status; if the record is private, planned, or temporarily unavailable, do not rely on it as a stop without confirming that it is accessible and operating for your purpose.
The record looks current, but you still need fuel today
A recent confirmation or update timestamp is helpful for judging the record, but it is not a live inventory indicator. Call and ask for the precise blend and same-day dispensing status before making a detour.
The station lists a different fuel
Check whether the result is for biodiesel or renewable diesel and verify the blend. DOE distinguishes the two fuels; a renewable-diesel listing should not be assumed to satisfy a biodiesel requirement.
You cannot tell whether your vehicle can use the listed blend
Pause before fueling above the limit you know is approved. Check the manual or contact the manufacturer for that vehicle. The broad manufacturer-approval figures published by DOE cannot determine compatibility for a specific vehicle.
