The reliable way to find unused subscriptions is to reconcile 12–13 months of bank and credit-card statements with email receipts, app-store lists and digital-wallet accounts. Cancel each service through the company or platform that bills you, save the confirmation and check the next statement. Deleting an app or replacing a card is not the same as canceling the subscription.
Start with your statements, not your memory
The fastest reliable way to find unused subscriptions is to compare your last 12–13 months of bank and credit-card activity with your email receipts, app-store subscription lists and digital-wallet accounts. Then cancel each subscription through the company or platform that actually bills you, save the confirmation and check the next statement.

Deleting an app, replacing a card or stopping a PayPal payment does not necessarily close the underlying subscription. The goal is to stop both the service and the recurring charge.

1. Collect every possible source of recurring charges
Review:
- Bank-account statements, including direct debits and ACH payments
- Credit-card and store-card statements
- Apple Account subscriptions
- Google Play subscriptions
- PayPal automatic payments
- Amazon, Microsoft, telecom and internet accounts
- App, gaming, fitness, cloud-storage, meal-kit and membership accounts
- Subscriptions paid by a spouse, partner or family member but used by your household
Check at least one full year because annual subscriptions can be invisible for 11 months. Two years may be worthwhile if you have many yearly renewals or recently changed cards.

2. Search your email for the clues merchants use
Search all inboxes for combinations of:
subscription, renewal, invoice, receipt, membership, trial, auto-renew, recurring, your payment, charged, and order confirmation.
Also search for the name of the payment processor shown on your statement. A statement descriptor may not match the consumer-facing brand. Match the amount, date, email address and last four digits of the payment method before deciding what a charge is.
3. Make a working list
Record enough information to identify and cancel each item:

For a monthly charge, calculate the annual cost by multiplying it by 12. A $12.99 subscription costs $155.88 a year before tax. That makes small charges easier to compare with what you actually use.
Decide what to cancel
Do not cancel solely because you forgot about a service. First check whether it is essential, shared or storing something you need.
- Cancel: you no longer use it, have a free alternative, or would not buy it again today.
- Pause: you use it seasonally and the provider offers a genuine pause with no automatic restart you will overlook.
- Downgrade: you use the service but do not need the premium tier, extra seats or add-ons.
- Keep: it protects important data, supports work, covers a necessary bill or is actively used by your household.
Before canceling cloud storage, photo backup, password managers, domain registrations, business software or email hosting, download or move anything you need. A payment cancellation can eventually affect access to stored files, shared benefits or account features.

Find the correct place to cancel
The billing route matters more than the device you used. If the receipt says Apple, cancel through Apple. If it says Google Play, cancel through Google Play. If the merchant bills you directly, use the merchant’s account page. A subscription purchased through a mobile carrier, internet provider or another partner may have to be canceled through that partner.
Apple subscriptions
On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, select the subscription and tap Cancel Subscription. If there is no Cancel button or an expiration message appears in red, Apple says the subscription is already canceled. On a Mac, open the App Store, click your name, choose Account Settings, select Subscriptions, choose the subscription and click Cancel Subscription. See Apple’s current cancellation instructions.
If you cannot find it, search your email for “receipt from Apple” or “invoice from Apple.” The receipt identifies the Apple Account used. If there is no Apple receipt, check your bank or card statement to identify the company that billed you. Apple says a subscription provided through a wireless carrier or another provider must be canceled with that provider.
Apple also advises canceling a free or discounted trial at least 24 hours before it ends if you do not want it to renew. That is an Apple-specific instruction; check the terms for trials purchased elsewhere.
Google Play subscriptions
On Android, open Google Play, tap your profile picture, choose Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions. Select the service, tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts. On a computer, go to Google Play subscriptions, choose Manage, click Cancel subscription, select a reason and click Continue.

Uninstalling the app does not cancel its subscription. Google says you normally retain access through the period you have already paid for, although payment plans and prepaid plans can work differently. Once a payment-plan charge has been made, stopping renewal may not remove remaining payments under that plan. If you cannot find the subscription, switch between Google Accounts; it may belong to another account.

Google’s subscription help page explains cancellation, pausing, prepaid plans, payment plans and refunds. Labels and refund rules can vary by country.
PayPal automatic payments
On the PayPal website, go to Settings, choose Payments, then Subscriptions and saved businesses or Automatic Payments. Select the merchant and cancel the automatic payment.
Do this in addition to contacting the merchant. Canceling PayPal’s authorization can stop future payments through PayPal, but it may not cancel the service contract, close the account or remove an outstanding balance. PayPal’s guidance recommends contacting the merchant to formally close the subscription. Its recurring-payment guide also explains what to do when a provider is unresponsive.

Go to Microsoft Services & subscriptions and sign in with the Microsoft Account that made the purchase. Find the service, select Manage, then choose Cancel or turn off recurring billing and follow the prompts.
Microsoft says that if you see Turn on recurring billing instead of a cancellation option, recurring billing is already off and the subscription will expire on the date shown. If Microsoft 365 was purchased through Apple, Google Play or another billing partner, that partner manages cancellation. See Microsoft’s cancellation instructions.
Subscriptions billed directly by the merchant
Sign in through the service’s official website, open Account, Billing, Membership or Plan, and look for Manage subscription, Cancel or Turn off auto-renewal.

Some services use an account page but require a support chat, phone call or cancellation form. Follow the provider’s process carefully. If the service offers a retention discount or pause, decline it if your actual decision is to cancel. A lower price is still a recurring charge.
For Spotify, for example, go to Manage your plan and select Cancel subscription. Spotify says a directly billed Premium plan normally remains active until the next billing date, while a zero-price free trial switches to the free service immediately. A partner-billed plan must be canceled with the partner. Its current cancellation guide covers family plans, partner billing and accounts that appear to be on the free tier.
What to save after canceling
Do not close the browser immediately. Save:
- A screenshot of the confirmation page
- The cancellation email or confirmation number
- The date the service ends
- The last four digits or payment method shown
- The name of the company that accepted the cancellation
Read the confirmation carefully. “Your plan will expire on…” usually means renewal has been stopped but access continues until the paid period ends. “Your account is closed” means something more final. If you only turned off marketing emails, changed plans or removed a payment method, the subscription may still be active.
If you cannot find the subscription
Work through these possibilities in order:
- Wrong account: Try other email addresses, Apple Accounts, Google Accounts and Microsoft Accounts used by your household.
- Different billing owner: Check whether Apple, Google Play, PayPal, a carrier, an internet provider or a retailer is listed on the receipt.
- Family or shared plan: The account holder or plan manager may be the only person who can cancel it.
- Different merchant name: Search the statement descriptor online only after confirming the charge details. Do not enter card information into an unfamiliar site.
- Old or closed account: Contact the merchant with the charge date, amount, statement descriptor and payment-method details. Do not email your full card or bank number.
If you are being charged but the service account shows no paid plan, you may be signed into the wrong account or may be dealing with an unauthorized charge. Contact the merchant and your bank or card issuer promptly, and secure the relevant email, wallet and financial accounts.

First make a clear cancellation request through the merchant’s stated method. Write down the date, time, representative, case number and exact wording of the request. Keep screenshots and emails.

A stop payment is a payment-control measure, not necessarily a contract cancellation. You may still owe a legitimate balance or be bound by a minimum term. Contact the provider to close the service, then use your bank or card issuer as a backstop if the provider keeps charging or refuses to honor a documented cancellation.
For a credit- or debit-card charge that appears after a valid cancellation, ask the issuer about its process for disputing a recurring charge. Provide the cancellation confirmation and dates. Rules and deadlines vary by country and issuer, so act quickly.
How to avoid unused subscriptions later
- Keep one subscription list with the price, billing frequency, renewal date and payment route.
- Put annual renewals on your calendar 30 days before the charge.
- Cancel a free trial as soon as you know you will not keep it; record the end date if you need access until then.
- Use a separate email folder or label for receipts and renewal notices.
- Review app-store and PayPal subscription pages every quarter.
- When you subscribe, write down the cancellation path immediately.
- Before approving a new subscription, calculate the annual cost and identify what you will stop using to pay for it.
A simple quarterly review is usually enough to catch forgotten monthly services. The important habit is to compare your list with actual statements, because a service can disappear from your attention without disappearing from your payment method.

Does deleting an app cancel the subscription?
Deleting an app does not cancel its subscription. Check Apple Subscriptions, Google Play Subscriptions or the merchant’s billing page and cancel there.
Will I keep access after canceling?
