Compare the rate that applies to your balance, how it can change, any introductory offer, fees, balance requirements, access rules and deposit insurance. Then recheck the account’s current disclosures before moving your money: a variable APY is not a promise about what you will earn over the coming year.
Start with the account you have—and the balance you expect to keep
Before comparing offers, write down the balance you normally keep in savings, whether you need frequent access to it, and the terms of your current account. A headline APY can apply only to a particular balance tier, or only if you meet stated conditions. The relevant comparison is the rate and terms that would actually apply to your money.

- Find your current APY and any balance tier or minimum that affects it.
- Check the account’s maintenance fee and the exact conditions for waiving it.
- Note any limits or charges for withdrawals, transfers or other transactions.
- Decide whether you need branch access, digital transfers or another feature that affects how you use the money.
Then compare the current account with alternatives using the same balance and the same access needs. If a bank advertises a higher rate for a large balance, do not use that rate to assess a smaller one. If the account has tiers, check whether all your funds earn the advertised APY or only the portion in a specified tier; the institution’s disclosure should explain how its tiers work.

It helps to make a simple side-by-side list before deciding. Put the APY that applies to your balance first, followed by whether it is introductory or ongoing, the rate-change terms, fees, minimums, transaction limits and insurance status. This keeps a prominent rate from distracting you from a less visible condition. If an offer does not make one of these terms clear, look for the account disclosure or ask the institution rather than filling in the gap with an assumption.

Read the rate disclosure, not just the headline APY
Many savings accounts have variable rates: the rate may change after you open the account. CFPB Regulation DD requires disclosures for variable-rate accounts to explain that the rate and APY may change, how the rate is determined, how often it may change and any limits. Read the current CFPB account-disclosure requirements alongside the institution’s own rate terms.
Look for whether the institution ties the rate to an index or sets it at its discretion. If the institution reserves the right to change rates at its discretion, the CFPB’s official interpretation says it must disclose that “rates may change at any time.” That language is not a schedule for future changes; it means the stated rate should not be treated as fixed. See the CFPB interpretation of account disclosures.
The CFPB’s regulatory definition of a variable-rate account includes an exception where the institution contracts to give at least 30 calendar days’ advance written notice of decreases. This is a definition in the regulation, not a general promise that every rate decrease will receive advance notice. Check the account’s actual terms and the applicable CFPB definitions.
In practice, separate three questions that can otherwise blur together: Is the account variable? What does the disclosure say determines the rate and how often it can change? Are there any disclosed limits? The answers describe the institution’s stated rules, not a guarantee that the APY will follow a particular market rate or remain competitive with other accounts. A rate described as variable can move after opening, so compare the account on the basis that its current APY may not last.
Check the APY’s time frame and assumptions
An APY disclosure is useful for comparing accounts, but it is not a forecast. For a variable-rate account without an introductory premium or discount, the regulatory APY calculation uses the initial rate and assumes it will not change during the year. That standardizes the disclosed figure; it does not mean the institution expects to keep the rate unchanged or that you will earn that amount.
For a variable-rate account with an introductory premium or discount, the APY calculation treats the introductory rate as applying for its stated period and the otherwise applicable variable rate as applying for the rest of the year. The CFPB APY calculation rule explains these conventions. Use them to understand the advertised figure, not to assume the rate will persist beyond its stated terms.
That distinction matters when two advertisements show similar APYs but use different rate structures. One figure may reflect an initial variable rate assumed to hold for calculation purposes; another may reflect a temporary introductory rate followed by the otherwise applicable variable rate. Compare the rate terms and introductory period, not just the APY printed in large type. Because the calculation uses specified assumptions, it should not be read as a prediction of the account’s future rate or your exact future interest.

Separate introductory rates from ongoing rates
If an offer highlights a special APY, find the introductory period, the rate that applies afterward and whether the later rate is variable. Compare the ongoing terms as well as the opening offer. A short-lived premium can make the displayed APY look more attractive than the rate you will have after the introductory period.
Confirm that the disclosure states how long the introductory rate lasts and what rate applies when it ends. If the offer does not make the later rate clear, ask the institution before opening the account or choose an offer whose terms you can assess. Do not treat a promotional APY as guaranteed for a full year unless the account terms explicitly provide that.
When reviewing an introductory offer, note both the exact period and the rate structure that follows it. The relevant comparison is not simply “introductory APY versus my current APY.” It is the terms over the stated introductory period and the disclosed terms after that period ends. The later rate may itself be variable, with its own rate-determination and change terms. CFPB Regulation DD requires the introductory period and variable-rate terms to be disclosed; use those details to understand what the offer actually promises.
Include fees and balance requirements in the comparison
A higher APY can be offset by account charges or by conditions you cannot reliably meet. Banks and credit unions may charge monthly maintenance fees and may waive them when customers meet conditions such as maintaining a minimum balance or receiving direct deposits. The CFPB explains these fees and waivers in its guidance on monthly maintenance fees.

- Is there a monthly maintenance fee? What specific action or balance waives it?
- Is there a minimum opening deposit or minimum ongoing balance?
- Does the APY change at a balance threshold?
- Could a fee apply if your balance falls below a stated level or you make certain transactions?
Compare costs using conditions you can actually meet, not a waiver that depends on a balance or deposit pattern you do not expect to maintain. If the fee is avoidable only by keeping more cash in the account than you want to hold there, include that trade-off in your decision.
Ask whether the requirement is an opening condition, an ongoing balance condition or a condition for avoiding a charge; these are different terms. A minimum may affect whether you can open an account, while another condition may determine whether you keep a fee waiver or qualify for a particular APY tier. Use the account’s disclosures to identify which requirement applies and what happens if you no longer meet it. Do not count a waiver as part of the account’s value unless you expect to satisfy it consistently.

There is no need to assume a fee will be offset by a higher APY just because the APY is larger. The answer depends on your balance and the actual fee and waiver terms. If the institution does not clearly explain a fee or condition in its materials, ask for clarification before making the account your destination for savings.

A savings account should fit how you plan to use the money. CFPB guidance notes that institutions may impose transaction limits or charge fees for exceeding them; account terms may also include minimum-balance requirements. Review the institution’s rules for withdrawals and transfers, including whether a limit applies, what counts as a transaction and what happens if you exceed it. The CFPB’s explanation of charges for savings-account transactions describes why such fees may appear.
Also consider the route and timing for getting money when you need it. Check whether you can transfer funds through the channels you use, whether you need a linked account, and whether the account offers branch access if that matters to you. A slightly higher APY may not be worthwhile if the account’s access restrictions conflict with your plans for the funds.
Read the transaction rules in the same practical way you read the rate terms. A limit is relevant only in the context of how you expect to use the account, but you should know what the institution counts toward it and what the consequence of exceeding it is. A fee or restriction could matter if you regularly move money, even when the APY looks attractive. If you expect to use savings as a frequently accessed spending reserve, make sure the account’s documented transfer and withdrawal terms fit that role.
Compare savings and money market accounts carefully
“Money market account” can refer to a bank or credit-union deposit account, while a money market mutual fund is an investment. They are not interchangeable. The CFPB describes money market accounts and the distinction in its guidance on money market accounts.
| Option | What to compare | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Savings account | APY for your balance, variable-rate terms, fees, minimums and access rules | A deposit account; verify that the institution and account are covered by deposit insurance. |
| Money market deposit account | The same rate, fee, balance and access terms; check the specific account’s disclosures | A bank or credit-union deposit product. It is not the same as a money market mutual fund. |
| Money market mutual fund | Its investment terms and risks, rather than deposit-account disclosures | An investment, not a bank or credit-union deposit account. Do not assume it has the same deposit-insurance treatment. |
Names alone do not establish which protections apply. Confirm the type of product and whether the specific institution and account are insured before depositing money.
The comparison method still applies when you consider a money market deposit account: look at the APY for your balance, rate changes, fees, minimums, access and insurance. Do not assume that a product is a deposit account based on a similar-sounding name, and do not treat an investment product as though it had the same protections as an insured deposit. The CFPB’s money market guidance, last reviewed August 28, 2026, makes this distinction and describes eligible deposit-account coverage.

Verify deposit insurance and your total deposits
Check that the bank or credit union and the specific deposit account are covered by FDIC or NCUA insurance. CFPB guidance describes coverage up to $250,000 for eligible deposits held by the same owner or owners at an insured institution. That limit applies by ownership and institution, so consider your other deposits there rather than evaluating a new account in isolation. The CFPB’s money market account guidance discusses this coverage and distinguishes insured deposit accounts from money market mutual funds.
Do not assume a product is insured because its name includes “savings” or “money market.” Verify the institution and account using official FDIC or NCUA resources before opening the account, especially if you are considering a product offered through an intermediary or with a name that could describe an investment rather than a deposit.

The $250,000 figure is not a separate allowance for every account at the same institution. CFPB guidance describes the limit for eligible deposits held by the same owner or owners, so review your existing deposits there and how the new account would be owned. If you hold deposits in more than one ownership arrangement, check the official FDIC or NCUA information for how coverage applies rather than assuming that the account count determines the coverage. Confirm both the institution and the specific product; a financial product’s marketing name is not proof of insurance.

- Record your needs. Note your typical balance, how often you expect to withdraw or transfer money, and whether branch or digital access matters.
- Gather current terms. For your existing account and each candidate, locate the current APY disclosure, fee schedule and account agreement.
- Match rates to your balance. Compare the APY and tier that apply to the amount you will actually keep in the account. Note any opening or ongoing minimum.
- Identify rate-change terms. Determine whether the rate is variable, how it is determined, how often it may change, any stated limits, and whether an introductory rate is involved.
- Account for fees and conditions. Check maintenance charges, waiver requirements and transaction fees. Do not assume you will meet a condition unless you expect to do so consistently.
- Check access and insurance. Make sure withdrawal and transfer rules suit your plans, and verify that the specific deposit account is covered by FDIC or NCUA insurance. Consider your other deposits under the same ownership at that institution.
- Recheck before opening or transferring. Rates and terms can change. Review the institution’s current disclosures immediately before you commit, rather than relying on an older advertisement or comparison.
- Keep a record. Save the disclosures and note the APY, introductory period if any, fees and minimums at the time you opened the account. This gives you a clear baseline for future reviews.
For each candidate, use its current institution disclosure rather than a comparison based only on an older headline or advertisement. Keep your notes specific enough to revisit: the APY and balance tier, the rate-change language, introductory period, any maintenance-fee waiver, transaction limits and insurance check. If an offer changes before you act, update the comparison instead of relying on terms you previously recorded.
This process is about checking whether the full account fits you, not chasing every rate change. An account with a lower current APY could still suit your access needs better; an account with a higher APY could still be a poor fit if you cannot meet its minimum or waiver condition. Compare the facts that apply to your own expected balance and use, then make the decision based on current terms.
When to revisit your account
Recheck your account when you receive a rate-change notice, see a material difference between its current APY and offers you are considering, or your balance or access needs change. Review the full comparison rather than reacting to one rate headline: an alternative may have an introductory offer, a different balance tier, a fee or withdrawal terms that change the value for you.

Rates, eligibility and account terms can change, so verify each institution’s disclosures at the point of decision.

A rate change can be a reason to review an account, but it does not by itself mean you should move money. Check what changed, then compare the current terms of your account with current alternatives. Revisit the decision if your expected balance changes enough to affect a tier or minimum, if your account use changes, or if you no longer meet a fee-waiver condition. Keep the same checklist so that a decision made later still accounts for the rate, fees, access and insurance—not just one number.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why am I being charged a monthly maintenance fee on my savings account?
The account may have a monthly maintenance fee, and a waiver may depend on meeting a stated condition such as maintaining a minimum balance or receiving direct deposits. Check the institution’s fee schedule for the exact condition and whether it applies to your account. The CFPB explains maintenance fees and possible waivers in its guidance last reviewed September 13, 2024.
Why am I being charged for transactions in my savings account?
Your institution may impose transaction limits or charge a fee for exceeding them. Review the account terms to see what counts as a transaction, whether a limit applies and what charge may follow if you exceed it. The CFPB’s savings-transaction guidance was last reviewed September 13, 2024.
Does a variable savings APY mean I will earn the advertised amount for a year?
No. A variable rate may change after you open the account. For regulatory APY calculations, a variable account without an introductory premium or discount is calculated using the initial rate as though it stayed unchanged for the year; an introductory offer is calculated using its stated introductory period and the otherwise applicable rate for the rest of the year. These are calculation conventions, not forecasts of future rates or interest.
Is a money market account the same as a money market mutual fund?
No. A money market account can be a bank or credit-union deposit product. A money market mutual fund is an investment, not the same kind of deposit account, so do not assume it has the same deposit-insurance treatment. Verify the type of product and the specific institution and account.
How much deposit insurance should I check when comparing accounts?
CFPB guidance describes coverage up to $250,000 for eligible deposits held by the same owner or owners at an insured institution. Consider your other deposits at that institution under the same ownership, and confirm that both the institution and the specific account are covered by FDIC or NCUA insurance.
The Bottom Line
Compare the APY that applies to your expected balance, but do not stop there. Check whether the rate is variable or introductory, the fees and conditions, transaction access and insurance. Then verify the current disclosures immediately before opening or transferring money: an advertised APY is not a promise that the rate will stay unchanged.
