How to File Your Federal Tax Return After Getting an Extension (2025 Return)

A Form 4868 extension gives most calendar-year taxpayers until October 15, 2026 to file a 2025 federal return—but not to pay. Follow this step-by-step guide to gather records, choose a filing route, submit Form 1040, and manage any balance or refund.

If you requested an extension for your 2025 federal income tax return, most calendar-year individual taxpayers must file by October 15, 2026. The extension gives you additional time to submit Form 1040 and its schedules, not additional time to pay tax. Prepare and file as soon as your records are complete, and verify whether a disaster postponement or special rule changes your date.

The practical process is straightforward: confirm the deadline that applies to you, gather and reconcile your records, choose an electronic or paper filing route, complete the actual return, report any extension payment, and pay any remaining balance promptly.

When is my tax return due if I filed an extension?

For a typical calendar-year individual filing a 2025 federal return, the automatic extension moves the filing deadline to October 15, 2026. The date appears in the IRS 2025 Form 4868 instructions and applies to most taxpayers who properly requested the extension.

That is the ordinary rule, not a universal one. Your deadline can differ if you are covered by an IRS disaster-relief notice, live outside the United States, or have an unusual filing situation. Check the current IRS notice for your location and circumstances before relying on October 15.

A disaster postponement can replace the ordinary date

IRS disaster relief is limited to defined areas and deadlines. For example, an IRS notice for Louisiana taxpayers affected by Tropical Storm Arthur set November 2, 2026 as the filing deadline for eligible individuals who already had a valid extension for a 2025 return. That same notice says payments connected with those 2025 returns were due April 15, 2026 and did not qualify for the postponement. The November date is not a nationwide extension.

Use the IRS disaster-relief information and the notice covering your area to confirm both eligibility and the postponed date. Do not assume that a deadline granted to another county, state, or type of taxpayer applies to you.

Does a tax extension give me more time to pay?

No. As the Internal Revenue Service put it in its August 26, 2026 reminder, An extension gives taxpayers more time to file but not more time to pay. Any unpaid tax was generally due on the original filing date, April 15, 2026 for most calendar-year individuals. Interest normally continues to accrue on an unpaid balance, and a late-payment penalty may also apply.

If you paid an estimated amount when you submitted Form 4868, that payment is credited to your account. When you finish Form 1040, report the extension payment in the payment section specified by the form and instructions. Your final tax calculation will determine whether you owe more or are due a refund.

Pay whatever you can promptly. If the balance is too large to pay in full, review the IRS payment-plan options rather than waiting for the October filing deadline. Filing the return on time generally prevents a separate late-filing penalty from growing, but it does not erase interest or payment-related charges.

What to do before preparing the return

1. Confirm the applicable deadline

  • Start with October 15, 2026 only if you are a calendar-year individual with a valid 2025 extension and no special postponement.
  • Check IRS disaster announcements if you live, work, or keep records in a federally declared disaster area.
  • Review special rules if you live abroad, serve in a combat zone, or have another filing status that can change the date.
  • Save the notice or instructions supporting the deadline you use.

2. Assemble complete income records

Collect every document needed to report 2025 income and withholding, such as wage statements, retirement or annuity forms, interest and dividend statements, brokerage reports, self-employment records, rental information, and records of other income. Add documentation for deductions and credits you intend to claim.

Check names, taxpayer identification numbers, amounts, and withholding figures for consistency. If a statement is missing or appears wrong, request a corrected document or use an IRS transcript rather than guessing. Filing an estimate that later conflicts with an information return can lead to notices and an amended-return process.

3. Review your IRS records

An IRS Individual Online Account can show account activity and tax transcripts. Compare those records with your documents, especially if you made an extension payment or estimated payments. Keep copies of the records you relied on and the confirmation for any electronic payment.

4. Separate federal filing from payment decisions

Make two lists before you begin. The first is what you must report on Form 1040 and its schedules. The second is what you have already paid and what remains due. Keeping those lists separate helps prevent the common mistake of treating an extension approval as approval of a particular tax balance. The extension only changes the filing timetable.

Choose a way to file

The IRS encourages electronic filing. Your best route depends on income, how complex the return is, and how much guidance you need.

Filing route Who can use it Preparation and submission Cost and considerations
IRS Free File guided preparation Taxpayers with 2025 adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less IRS partner software provides guided federal preparation and e-filing through October 15, 2026 Federal preparation and filing are free for eligible users; partner offers and any free state option vary
Free File Fillable Forms Taxpayers above the guided Free File income limit who can prepare their own return Electronic versions of federal forms with limited calculation and guidance No guided interview; you must understand the forms and schedules you need
Other e-file software Taxpayers who want an interview-style process or features not available through Free File Commercial software prepares and electronically submits the federal return Pricing, state filing charges, supported forms, and professional-help options vary; verify the product supports your return before paying
Tax professional People who prefer professional advice or have complicated income, deductions, or filing circumstances The preparer completes and generally e-files the return, subject to your review and authorization Fees vary; provide complete records and retain a signed copy and e-file acceptance
Paper Form 1040 Anyone who must or prefers to mail a return Complete the current Form 1040 and schedules, sign it, and mail it to the address in the form instructions Slower processing is common; use a trackable mailing method and retain proof of timely mailing

The IRS says some Free File partners also provide free state preparation and filing to eligible taxpayers, but that availability differs by partner. Free File eligibility is season-specific: the $89,000 threshold and October 15, 2026 availability apply to the 2025 return season.

How to compare the options

Compare more than the advertised price. Check whether the route supports every form and schedule you need, whether federal e-filing is included, whether a state return costs extra, and how much help is available if a record is missing or the return is rejected. A guided product can reduce data-entry mistakes, while Fillable Forms assumes you already know which lines and schedules apply. A professional may be worthwhile when records are unusually complex, but you still need to review the completed return and retain a copy.

Can I still use IRS Free File after filing an extension?

Yes, if you meet the season’s eligibility rules. For a 2025 return, the IRS says guided Free File is available through October 15, 2026 to taxpayers whose adjusted gross income is $89,000 or less. Filing Form 4868 does not disqualify you. Choose an IRS partner offer, confirm what is included, and finish the guided return before the applicable deadline.

If your adjusted gross income is above $89,000 and you are comfortable preparing the forms yourself, Free File Fillable Forms may be available. It provides less interview-style assistance, so review the Form 1040 instructions and schedules carefully. Partner offers can change, and free state preparation is not guaranteed.

How do I file my federal tax return after getting an extension?

  1. Open the correct tax-year return. Select the 2025 federal Form 1040 and the instructions for your filing status. Do not accidentally begin a 2026 return.
  2. Enter personal and filing information. Use the legal names and Social Security numbers or other taxpayer identification numbers shown on official records. Select the filing status that actually applied for 2025.
  3. Report all income and adjustments. Enter each income statement and applicable self-employment, retirement, health-savings, education, or other adjustment. Reconcile totals to your records and transcripts.
  4. Complete deductions and credits. Use the schedules required for your claims. Keep receipts, statements, and worksheets; generally you do not mail them with an e-filed return, but you may need them if the IRS asks for substantiation.
  5. Enter withholding, estimated payments, and your extension payment. Include federal withholding from information statements and any estimated payments. Report the amount you paid with Form 4868 in the payment section specified by Form 1040 and its instructions.
  6. Review the tax calculation. Check adjusted gross income, taxable income, total tax, payments, refund, or balance due. Confirm that bank information for direct deposit or electronic payment is correct.
  7. Submit electronically or by mail. E-file before the applicable deadline and wait for an acceptance message. For paper filing, print the complete return, sign and date it, use the IRS mailing address for your situation, and keep proof of mailing.
  8. Save the final records. Retain the filed return, schedules, payment confirmations, acceptance notice, and supporting documents with your extension approval.

A filed Form 4868 is not a substitute for Form 1040. You still must submit the full return and any required schedules. The IRS instructions say not to attach a copy of Form 4868 to the completed return.

Check the return before pressing submit

Run a final comparison against your source documents. Confirm that every W-2 and 1099 is included, withholding digits were not transposed, estimated payments are credited to the right year, and the extension payment is entered only once. Review dependent information, bank routing numbers, and the taxpayer identification numbers for everyone listed. Save a PDF or printed copy of the exact return you transmitted, not merely a summary screen.

What happens if I owe taxes after the extension deadline?

Pay immediately if possible

After the return calculates your balance, make a payment through an IRS-approved method as soon as you can. Earlier payment limits the period during which interest and potential late-payment penalties can accrue. Ensure the payment is designated for the correct tax year and form.

Use a payment arrangement if you cannot pay in full

File the return by the applicable deadline even if you cannot pay the entire balance. Then review the IRS installment-agreement and other payment-plan choices. Eligibility, fees, and terms depend on your balance and financial information. A payment plan does not stop interest from accruing, so pay more than the minimum when your budget permits.

Do not treat October 15 as a payment deadline

The extension date concerns filing. It does not reset the original April payment date, and a disaster postponement may extend filing without extending payment. Read the specific IRS notice that applies to you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if I am due a refund?

If your completed return shows an overpayment, e-file and choose direct deposit when available. The IRS identifies electronic filing with direct deposit as the faster refund-delivery route compared with mailing a paper return and check. Processing time varies, and the cited IRS guidance does not promise a fixed number of days.

Verify the routing and account numbers before submitting. A mistake can delay delivery or cause the deposit to be rejected and reissued by check.

Common problems and how to resolve them

A missing W-2, 1099, or other statement

Contact the payer for a replacement and check your IRS transcript. Do not omit income simply because a form has not arrived. If a corrected statement changes the return after filing, follow the IRS process for an amended return.

The extension payment is not showing in your account

Check the bank or card confirmation, the tax year selected, and the taxpayer identification information used for the payment. Allow time for posting, then compare the payment with your Individual Online Account. Keep evidence of the transaction while the account is being corrected.

Your e-file is rejected

Read the rejection code, correct the underlying data, and retransmit before the deadline. Common causes include a duplicate dependent Social Security number, an identity-verification mismatch, or an electronic signature issue. If electronic filing cannot be completed, print, sign, and mail the return with proof of timely mailing.

You discover an error after acceptance

Do not send a second original return. Determine whether the error can be corrected through the IRS amended-return procedure and whether the relevant form is currently available electronically or must be mailed. Keep the accepted original and all supporting calculations.

You moved or changed bank accounts

Use your current mailing address and carefully review direct-deposit or payment details. Update the IRS through the appropriate account or filing process; do not rely on an old preparer profile to carry forward accurate information.

Paper-filing requirements

If you mail the return, use the current Form 1040 and all schedules required for your entries. Sign and date the return; a missing signature can make an otherwise complete paper return invalid. Use the mailing address listed in the form instructions for your state and circumstances, because IRS addresses differ by destination and payment status.

Mail early enough to meet the deadline and use a service that provides a dated receipt or tracking. Keep a complete photocopy or PDF of everything mailed. Do not include Form 4868 unless the current instructions specifically require documentation for an unusual situation; for a normal extended individual return, the IRS says not to attach it.

For most calendar-year individuals filing a 2025 federal return, it is due October 15, 2026. A disaster-relief notice or special rule can set a different date, so verify your circumstances.

Does a tax extension give me more time to pay?

No. Tax generally remained due April 15, 2026. Interest and possible late-payment penalties can continue until the balance is paid, even when the filing deadline was extended.

Can I file before October 15?

Yes. The IRS says extension filers do not have to wait until October 15, 2026. Filing once your records are accurate can resolve the return and any refund or balance sooner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I send Form 4868 with Form 1040?

No. Form 4868 grants additional filing time; it does not replace Form 1040, and the instructions say not to attach a copy to the completed ordinary return. Report any payment made with it in the proper payment section.

What happens if I owe taxes after the extension deadline?

File the return by the applicable date and pay as much as possible immediately. If you cannot pay in full, review IRS payment-plan options. Interest can continue under an arrangement.

Is the $89,000 Free File limit based on my 2025 return?

Yes. The IRS identifies $89,000 of 2025 adjusted gross income as the threshold for guided Free File for this filing season. Availability and partner terms are season-specific.

Is a paper return acceptable after an extension?

Yes. Use the current Form 1040, complete every required schedule, sign and date it, and mail it to the address in the instructions. Retain dated mailing proof.

Will direct deposit guarantee a particular refund date?

No. E-filing with direct deposit is the IRS-recommended faster delivery route, but processing time varies and no fixed delivery guarantee is provided.
