You can file ITR-1 online through India’s e-Filing portal, but “in 10 minutes” is a best-case possibility—not an official completion-time estimate. A straightforward return may move quickly if you are eligible and have your records, login, bank account and e-verification method ready. Reviewing prefilled figures, entering missing details, paying tax due and verifying the return can all add time.
Who can file ITR-1 for AY 2026–27?
According to the Income Tax Department’s AY 2026–27 ITR-1 guidance, ITR-1 (Sahaj) is for a qualifying resident individual with total income of no more than ₹50 lakh and income within the form’s permitted categories. These include salary or pension, income from up to two house properties, agricultural income up to ₹5,000, and specified other-source income such as interest. The form also allows section 112A long-term capital gains up to ₹1.25 lakh, subject to the form’s conditions. These are eligibility limits, not estimates of tax payable.
Do not rely on an older guide that says ITR-1 covers only one house property: the department’s AY 2026–27 help page says up to two may be reported. It also notes an unrealized-rent field and changes concerning foreign retirement benefits.
ITR-1 is not available to everyone who is an individual. The department lists exclusions including non-residents and resident not ordinarily residents, income above ₹50 lakh, agricultural income above ₹5,000, business or professional income, specified lottery, racehorse or gambling income, certain capital-gains situations, unlisted equity shares, company directorship, tax deduction under section 194N, and deferred tax on eligible-startup ESOPs. Other form conditions can also make ITR-1 unavailable. Check the current-year applicability guidance if any of these may apply to you.

What to prepare before you start
Getting these items ready is the main way to avoid delays in the portal flow:
- Registration and valid login credentials for the Income Tax e-Filing portal.
- An active PAN and resident status consistent with ITR-1 eligibility.
- A validated bank account on the portal.
- Income, deduction and tax-paid details to compare with the prefilled return.
- Access to an accepted e-verification method, such as Aadhaar OTP, a digital signature certificate (DSC), or an electronic verification code (EVC) through net banking, a bank account or a demat account.
The department’s online filing manual recommends PAN–Aadhaar linkage. Verification options and portal requirements can vary, so confirm the method available to you rather than assuming linkage is the only option.

How to file ITR-1 online, step by step
The Income Tax Department’s AY 2026–27 online manual describes this portal sequence:
- Sign in to the Income Tax e-Filing portal.
- Go to e-File → Income Tax Returns → File Income Tax Return.
- Select Assessment Year 2026–27 and Online mode, then continue.
- Resume a saved return or start a new filing.
- Select the applicable taxpayer status and choose ITR-1.
- Review the displayed document list and select the applicable filing reason.
- Check the prefilled personal details and income. Correct or add information where needed, and confirm each section.
- Review income, deductions, tax paid and the portal’s tax computation. Reconcile prefilled figures with your records rather than assuming they are complete or correct.
- If the computation shows tax payable, follow the portal’s payment flow and return to the filing process. The manual recommends paying through the portal rather than leaving a payable amount for later.
- Preview the return, submit it and complete e-verification with an available method. Treat filing as complete only after the portal confirms the required verification step.
Choose the tax regime before confirming
For AY 2026–27, the department manual says the new tax regime is the default. In the Personal Information section, you can opt out and file under the old regime. Deductions and exemptions differ between regimes, so compare the treatment against your own income and eligible claims before confirming. The manual specifically identifies sections 80CCD(2) and 80CCH among deductions visible in the new-regime situation it describes; that does not mean every deduction available under the old regime is available under the new one.

Filing, paying and verifying are separate steps
Submitting a return, paying any tax due and e-verifying the return are related but distinct tasks. The department’s ITR-1 manual provides payment steps within the filing flow, while its FAQ distinguishes electronic return filing from electronic tax payment. Do not assume that submitting the form alone finishes the process; follow the portal’s payment instructions if tax is due and complete the required verification.
Is there an offline option?
Yes. The department supports filing through the online portal or an offline utility. Its AY 2026–27 downloads page lists the return utility and release information. The portal is a browser-led flow; the offline utility is downloadable software, not paper filing. Either route still requires you to submit the return and complete the applicable verification steps.

Can you really file ITR-1 in 10 minutes?
Possibly, if your case is straightforward, you qualify for ITR-1, the prefilled details are accurate, you have all records and portal access ready, no additional information or tax payment slows you down, and you can verify promptly. The Income Tax Department’s manual lays out multiple steps but gives no ten-minute completion estimate or service-level promise. Allow more time if you need to reconcile figures, correct details, determine the right regime, pay a balance, or resolve access or verification issues.
Check the applicable filing deadline
No single deadline applies to every taxpayer category, and dates can change through official notices. Confirm the current deadline that applies to your situation on the Income Tax Department’s official channels. The department FAQ notes revised-return rule changes for AY 2026–27; those changes do not establish the original-return deadline for every filer.
