How to Explain Cash Deposits in Your Bank Account to India’s Income Tax Department

A cash deposit is not automatically taxable income. Explain it by tracing each amount to its genuine source, matching dates and records, and following any department communication for the relevant tax year.

Explain each cash deposit by identifying its genuine source and matching it to records for the same dates and amounts. A deposit alone does not prove that you earned taxable income. What matters is the source, the evidence you can provide, the tax year involved and, if the department has contacted you, the exact request and deadline in that communication.

This guide concerns India. Tax rules and statutory references can change, so check which law applies to the relevant tax year before drawing conclusions about your liability.

Start with the source of the cash—not the size of the deposit

Make a separate explanation for each deposit, or for a clearly identifiable group of deposits with the same source. State where the cash came from, when you received or withdrew it, when you deposited it, and how the amount was calculated. Then match that account to genuine records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A cash deposit may represent money already recorded or taxed, a redeposit of cash previously withdrawn, proceeds from a sale, business receipts, or money received from another person as a loan or gift. Those explanations are not interchangeable: each calls for a different evidence trail. Do not label a deposit as a loan, gift, sale or redeposit unless that is what actually happened.

These records are practical examples, not an official exhaustive checklist or a guarantee that an Assessing Officer will accept a particular explanation. The facts and documents in your case matter.

Before writing, separate what you know from what you need to verify. The bank statement can establish the date and amount of a deposit, but it may not explain where the cash came from. A withdrawal entry can show that cash left an account, but does not by itself show that the same cash was later deposited. A sale record or business entry may explain the source, but the dates and amounts still need to connect to the deposit being asked about.

Match the explanation to the real source

Possible source Records that may help explain it What to reconcile
Cash withdrawn from your own account and later redeposited Bank statements or withdrawal records for the original withdrawal and the later deposit Whether the amounts and dates form a credible trail, including any gap between withdrawal and redeposit
Business receipts Sales invoices or receipts, books of account and related bank records How the cash receipts add up to the deposits and how they are reflected in your records
Sale proceeds Sale documentation and the related bank record Whether the amount deposited matches the proceeds shown by the transaction records
Genuine loan or gift Records of the transaction and related bank records Who provided the money, when you received it, the amount and how the deposit relates to the transaction

Cash withdrawn and deposited again

If you say the deposit is cash you previously withdrew, connect the withdrawal and deposit using the bank records. Explain the dates and amounts rather than simply saying “own money.” If the amounts do not match, account for the difference honestly. A withdrawal record may support the explanation, but it does not by itself establish what happened to the cash in between.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider the trail in sequence: the account and date of withdrawal, the amount taken out, what happened to the cash as far as you can establish, and the later deposit. If the deposit is less than the withdrawal, do not imply that the entire withdrawal was redeposited. If it is more, explain what other source accounts for the additional amount. If there is a gap between the dates, describe it accurately rather than presenting the withdrawal and deposit as if they happened together.

This is different from cash received from another person. A withdrawal from your own account may help trace your own funds; it does not establish the source of money someone else gave you. Keep the explanation tied to the person or transaction that actually supplied the cash.

Business receipts

For cash received through business activity, use the records that show how the receipts arose and how they were entered in your books, where you maintain them. Reconcile the relevant sales records to the deposits. If the deposits combine receipts from several dates, show how those receipts total the amount deposited instead of presenting an unexplained lump sum.

Work from the underlying receipts toward the bank entry: identify the relevant sales or receipts, show the amounts included in the calculation, then connect their total to the deposit or deposits. If a deposit includes receipts from more than one date, list the component amounts and dates in your working reconciliation. If the books and bank statement do not line up exactly, identify the difference and explain what the records actually show; do not alter an entry to force a match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sale proceeds

Identify what was sold and use the sale documentation to connect the transaction to the amount deposited. Explain any difference between the documented proceeds and the deposit, rather than assuming the deposit amount speaks for itself.

For example, if the document records a transaction amount that differs from the cash deposited, say what the discrepancy is and which records support each figure. Do not describe unrelated cash as sale proceeds just because a sale occurred around the same time. The useful explanation is the one that traces this deposit to this transaction.

Loan or gift from another person

Describe the actual arrangement and identify the person who provided the money. Use genuine records of the transaction and the related bank activity where available. Do not describe money as a loan or gift merely because another explanation is harder to document.

Make clear how much was received, when it was received, who provided it and how that amount corresponds to the cash deposit. If only part of a deposit came from that person, separate that part from the other source. Where the available records do not establish a detail, do not present it as certain; explain what you can support and seek professional advice if the issue is significant or disputed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a deposit-by-deposit reconciliation

A clear reconciliation lets a reader follow the money without having to infer the explanation. Begin with the bank statement and work from each deposit back to its source. A simple working table can help you prepare your response:

Deposit date Deposit amount Actual source Related record Difference to explain
Date shown on bank statement Amount shown on bank statement Specific source, such as a prior withdrawal or identified receipt Record that supports the stated source Any mismatch in amount or timing, with a factual explanation

Use the financial or tax year specified in the department’s communication, if you received one. Check that the statement, source records and explanation all concern the same period. If multiple deposits relate to one source, show the calculation connecting the individual amounts to the total. If one deposit combines different sources, separate the portions and support each one.

A practical way to prepare the table is to list every deposit in the period first, then add a source and document reference for each one. Mark entries that do not yet reconcile instead of silently omitting them. For a group of deposits from one source, show the individual amounts and the total. For a deposit from mixed sources, show the separate portions and their supporting records. This makes it easier to spot whether you have counted an amount twice or left part of a deposit unexplained.

Next, compare the bank entries with the records that describe the source. Check dates, amounts, account details and period. A date difference may matter to the explanation even when the amounts match. A single total in your response may be difficult to assess if the underlying deposits occurred on different dates or came from different sources. Keep the calculation simple enough for someone else to follow from the statement to the source documents.

Do not invent or backdate invoices, receipts, loan records or other documents. If a record is missing or the figures do not reconcile, state what you can establish and explain the gap accurately. An incomplete but truthful account is preferable to a fabricated paper trail. Keep original records in their genuine form and retain copies of the material you use in preparing an explanation.

How to write the explanation

A useful written response is specific and organized around the question actually asked. It need not claim more than the records support. You can structure it in this order:

  1. Identify the matter. State the tax year and the deposit or deposits addressed, using the dates and amounts shown in the communication and bank record.
  2. State the source plainly. Describe whether the cash was a redeposit of your withdrawal, business receipts, sale proceeds, or a genuine loan or gift, as applicable.
  3. Show the trail. Explain how the source amount relates to the deposit, including relevant dates and any calculation for multiple receipts or mixed sources.
  4. Refer to supporting records. Identify the relevant bank statement, withdrawal record, sales record, books or transaction document. Use only genuine records.
  5. Address gaps directly. Explain any mismatch or missing record accurately. Do not ignore a discrepancy or cover it with an unsupported conclusion.

This is a practical way to present facts, not an official form or universal response procedure. The communication may request particular information or prescribe a channel, so follow that request rather than relying on a generic template. If you are uncertain what a question means or whether your records adequately support the explanation, get qualified advice before submitting a response.

Understand the difference between reporting and taxability

The Income Tax Department’s 2017 notification on SFT-004 describes a reporting condition for aggregate cash deposits of ₹10 lakh or more in a financial year across one or more accounts other than a current account or time deposit. Under that reporting rule, accounts of the same nature are aggregated, and specified banks and post offices report the information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is an information-reporting threshold—not a tax-free allowance, an automatic tax assessment or a safe harbour. Crossing it does not, by itself, establish that the deposits are taxable income. Staying below it does not establish that the money is exempt or immune from scrutiny. The source and records still matter.

Keep the reporting question separate from the tax question. The threshold describes when specified institutions report certain aggregate deposits under the cited rule. It does not answer where your particular cash came from or whether it is taxable. Conversely, being below that reporting condition does not prove that a deposit has an explained source. Do not use ₹10 lakh as a personal deposit limit, a guaranteed exemption or a prediction that an inquiry will or will not occur.

The notification is from 2017 and describes a specific reporting condition. For a question about a different period, verify the official rule applicable to that period rather than assuming that an older figure, account category or reporting provision resolves the matter. Your explanation should focus on the real source and the relevant records in any event.

Why an explanation may be examined

An Income Tax Department guide published in 2026 describes the framework for money that is not recorded in books of account, where maintained, and for which the taxpayer offers no explanation about its nature and source, or an explanation the Assessing Officer finds unsatisfactory. The guide quotes the provision this way:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Where in any year the taxpayer is found to be the owner of any money, bullion, jewellery or other valuable article and such money, bullion, jewellery or other valuable article is not recorded in the books of account, if any, maintained by him for any source of income, and the taxpayer offers no explanation about the nature and source thereof or the explanation offered by him is not, in the opinion of the Assessing Officer, satisfactory, then the value of the money, bullion, jewellery or other valuable article may be deemed to be the income of the taxpayer for such year.”

The guide discusses sections 68, 69, 69A, 69B, 69C and 69D of the Income-tax Act, 1961, and the rate under section 115BBE in the framework it describes. It states a 60% rate for income within the specified unexplained-income provisions and also discusses additional surcharge, cess and penalty conditions. These are tax-year-sensitive references, not a blanket rule that every cash deposit is taxed at 60%. The applicable law, facts and conditions must be checked for the relevant tax year; do not apply a figure in the guide automatically to another year.

The practical point is that an explanation should address both the nature of the money and its source, with records that make the account understandable. The quoted provision refers to an Assessing Officer’s consideration of whether an explanation is satisfactory; it does not mean a bank deposit itself proves that the provision applies. Nor does having a record automatically settle every question. The facts, the records, the relevant provision and the tax year all matter.

Because the 2026 guide discusses provisions of the Income-tax Act, 1961, do not assume that its section numbers or stated rate govern every current or historic tax year. Verify which law applies to the period in question. A formal dispute or a potentially significant liability calls for advice from a qualified Indian tax professional who can assess the applicable law and the documents together.

If the department contacts you, follow the communication you received

There is no single response procedure or deadline that can be inferred for every communication. Read the actual message or notice carefully and identify the tax year, information requested, response channel and deadline stated there. The Income Tax Department’s e-Filing portal lists topics including AIS, TIS, SFT preliminary response, e-campaign response and e-verification, but those topics do not establish one universal workflow for all cases.

  1. Identify the communication. Note what it asks about, the tax year it names and any response date or other instruction.
  2. Check the relevant information. Compare the deposits in question with your bank records and the genuine records for their sources. Use the channel and instructions named in the communication.
  3. Prepare a specific explanation. Connect each deposit to its source and supporting records. Explain any timing or amount mismatch rather than leaving the department to guess.
  4. Submit as directed and keep a copy. Retain the response and the documents you submitted so you can refer to them if the matter continues.

Do not assume that a general information page supplies the deadline for your case. The communication you received is the starting point: check the request, the period it covers, how it directs you to respond and the date it gives. If it refers to AIS, TIS, an SFT preliminary response, an e-campaign or e-verification, use the applicable channel and instructions in that communication. The existence of these portal topics is not a substitute for reading the actual request.

Keep a copy of the submitted explanation and the documents sent with it. If the portal or communication gives a way to retain a submission record, keep that as well. The purpose is to be able to identify what you said and what you provided if there is a later question; do not assume that submitting one response ends every possible follow-up.

If the communication is formal, the amount is substantial, the explanation is disputed, or you cannot reconcile the records, seek advice from a qualified Indian tax professional. The relevant tax year and the precise request can affect what response is appropriate. A professional may help assess which legal provisions apply and whether the documents and explanation align; no generic service or form can guarantee an outcome.

Will a cash deposit get you an income tax notice?

The reporting rule does not establish that every deposit above its threshold will lead to a notice, nor does it guarantee that a deposit below the threshold will not be examined. A reported transaction and a determination that money is taxable are different things. If the department asks about a deposit, respond to the actual question with a truthful, traceable explanation and records for the relevant period.

In practical terms, neither the size of a deposit alone nor the SFT reporting figure tells you in advance what will happen in an individual case. The relevant question is whether you can explain the source of the money and support that explanation with genuine records for the tax year concerned. If you receive a communication, treat it as an individual request: check what it says rather than guessing from a threshold.

Before you send an explanation

  • Have you identified the genuine source of every deposit being asked about?
  • Do the dates and amounts in your explanation match the bank and source records—or explain any differences?
  • Are you addressing the financial or tax year in the communication?
  • Are the documents genuine and unaltered?
  • Have you followed the channel and deadline in the actual communication and kept a copy?
  • Have you separated a redeposit of your own withdrawal from cash received from another person or from business or sale proceeds?
  • If a deposit contains more than one source, have you shown the amounts and records for each portion?
  • Have you avoided treating the SFT reporting threshold as an exemption or as proof of taxability?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is every cash deposit in a bank account taxable income?

No. A deposit by itself does not establish that you earned taxable income. Explain the actual source—such as a redeposit of your own withdrawal, business receipts, sale proceeds, or a genuine loan or gift—and connect it to genuine records. Tax treatment depends on the facts and the law for the relevant tax year.

What records can support a cash deposit explanation?

Depending on the source, useful records may include bank statements and withdrawal records, sales invoices or receipts, books of account, sale documentation, or records of a genuine loan or gift. This is not an official exhaustive checklist or a guarantee that a particular record will be accepted. Match dates and amounts and explain gaps truthfully.

Does the ₹10 lakh SFT-004 threshold mean deposits below it are tax-free?

No. The Income Tax Department’s 2017 SFT-004 notification describes aggregate cash deposits of ₹10 lakh or more in a financial year across one or more accounts, other than a current account or time deposit, as reportable by specified banks and post offices. It is an information-reporting condition, not a tax-free allowance or safe harbour. Verify the rule applicable to the relevant period.

Will a deposit above ₹10 lakh automatically result in a notice or tax?

The cited reporting condition does not establish that every deposit above the threshold will result in a notice, and a reported transaction is not itself a determination that money is taxable. The source and records matter. A deposit below the threshold is not guaranteed to be exempt from scrutiny.

How do I explain cash withdrawn from my account and deposited again?

Match the withdrawal and deposit dates and amounts using bank records, and describe any gap between them. If the amounts differ, explain the difference rather than claiming the entire deposit came from that withdrawal. The withdrawal record may help trace the funds, but it does not by itself prove what happened to the cash in between.

What should I do if I receive an income-tax communication about cash deposits?

Read the specific communication for its tax year, question, response channel and deadline. Prepare a deposit-by-deposit explanation supported by genuine records, follow the instructions named in the communication, and keep a copy of what you submit. There is no universal procedure or deadline established for every communication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the 60% rate apply to every cash deposit?

No. An Income Tax Department guide published in 2026 describes a 60% rate for income within specified unexplained-income provisions and also discusses additional surcharge, cess and penalty conditions. It is not a blanket rate on all cash deposits. The law, statutory references and conditions must be checked for the relevant tax year.

Should I get help from a tax professional?

Consider a qualified Indian tax professional if the communication is formal, the amount is substantial, the explanation is disputed, or your records do not reconcile. The tax year and exact request can affect the response, so advice should be based on your facts and documents.

The Bottom Line

Trace every deposit to its genuine source, match it to records for the relevant dates and tax year, and explain differences honestly. A reporting threshold is not an exemption or proof of taxability. If the department contacts you, follow the exact request, channel and deadline in that communication; seek qualified Indian tax advice when the matter is formal, disputed or difficult to reconcile.
