To judge whether a cryptocurrency purchase is likely to move the price or fill worse than expected, evaluate the exact token pair on the venue you plan to use, at your intended order size. Check the bid–ask spread, the amount available at nearby prices, and the estimated average execution price—including fees. Treat 24-hour volume as background, not proof that you can trade at a reasonable price. Liquidity changes, so check again close to placing the order.
What token liquidity tells you—and what it does not
Liquidity is the ability to buy or sell an asset without causing a large change in its price or accepting a substantially worse price than expected. It is not one fixed property of a token. It depends on the particular market, venue, and trade size: a token may have substantial activity against one quote asset on one exchange and little executable liquidity on another pair, chain, or platform.

A price shown on a chart is usually a last-traded or reference price. It does not tell you how much you could buy now, or what price you would receive for a particular order. A chart can show a stable price even when the nearest available offers are sparse. S&P Global describes crypto liquidity as fragmented across assets, markets, and exchanges, making a token-wide liquidity label less useful than an assessment of the market you would actually trade in: S&P Global’s analysis of crypto-asset trading liquidity.
The practical question is therefore not simply “Is this token liquid?” It is: What spread, depth, fees, and expected price impact would my planned order face in this exact market right now?

Identify the exact market and trade first
Before comparing liquidity figures, specify what you intend to buy and where. A ticker alone may not uniquely identify an asset, and similarly named tokens can exist on different chains. Record the token contract address when applicable, the chain, the paired or quote asset, the venue or pool, and your planned purchase size.
- Asset: Confirm the token’s identity; on a decentralized exchange (DEX), verify its contract address and chain rather than relying on a name or ticker alone.
- Pair: Note the asset you will pay with, such as USD, USDT, or ETH. Token/USDT on one venue is a different market from token/USD on another.
- Venue: Identify the specific centralized exchange or DEX pool through which the order would execute.
- Order size: Use the amount you actually plan to spend. A market that can handle a small purchase may not handle a much larger one at a similar price.
Compare like with like. A token’s reported activity across several pairs, chains, or exchanges does not establish the depth available in the one market you can access. Make sure the quote asset and venue match the route you would actually use; otherwise, the comparison may describe a market that cannot determine your fill.
Read a centralized exchange’s spread and order-book depth
Calculate the quoted spread
In a centralized exchange order book, the bid is the highest displayed price a buyer is offering, and the ask is the lowest displayed price a seller is requesting. The spread is the ask minus the bid. Because a raw difference means different things for tokens at different price levels, calculate it as a percentage of the midpoint:
Midpoint = (best bid + best ask) ÷ 2Spread percentage = (best ask − best bid) ÷ midpoint × 100
For example, if the best bid is $0.99 and the best ask is $1.01, the midpoint is $1.00 and the quoted spread is 2%. This is an illustrative calculation, not a recommended cutoff. A spread is an immediate quoted cost of crossing from one side of the book to the other; it is not a guarantee that an order will fill entirely at either best quote.
Using the midpoint makes spread readings easier to compare across assets with very different prices. When tracking a market over time or comparing venues, record the bid, ask, midpoint, and percentage together. A raw spread alone can look small or large simply because the token’s price is denominated differently.
Check how much is available beyond the best quote
Depth describes the amount of executable trading interest within a stated price range. Inspect the cumulative offers a buyer would consume above the midpoint and, for comparison, the bids available below it. State the band and venue whenever recording a depth figure. For instance, “depth within 1% of midpoint” is more informative than a depth number with no price range attached.

S&P Global defines 1% market depth as executable volume within a 1% range of the quoted midpoint. This kind of band gives you a consistent way to compare nearby liquidity, but it does not replace a trade-size estimate: your planned order may extend beyond the band or consume liquidity unevenly within it. Compare the same bands for each market rather than setting one venue’s narrow range against another venue’s wider range.
A narrow spread can hide a shallow book. If only a small quantity is available at the best ask, a larger market buy may consume that offer and then fill at successively higher prices. The reverse applies to a sale that consumes bids. Assess the levels relevant to your order rather than looking only at the first bid and ask.
Depth on both sides is useful context even when you are only buying. Offers indicate what is available for your purchase, while bids show the other side of the market and can reveal an imbalance. Neither side guarantees that the same amount will remain available by the time an order reaches the venue.
Depth is an estimate based on displayed orders, not reserved capacity. Orders may be changed or canceled, and market conditions can shift while you are preparing a trade. If the venue exposes depth over time, compare more than one snapshot; instability, or an imbalance between bids and asks, can add context to a single depth reading. Understand the EU transparency rule’s scope
MiCA Article 76 requires covered crypto-asset service providers operating trading platforms to make advertised bid and ask prices and depth at those prices public continuously during trading hours. It also requires transaction price, volume, and time to be made public as close to real time as technically possible. This is an EU requirement for platforms covered by the regulation; it does not mean every exchange worldwide publishes the same data. See ESMA’s MiCA Article 76 text.
Estimate the execution cost for your order size
The most useful liquidity check models your intended order against available prices. On a centralized exchange, use an order preview or depth calculator if available, or estimate how the order would walk through the offers or bids. Record the expected average fill price, not just the first price level. Include applicable trading fees when comparing what you expect to pay with the amount of crypto you expect to receive.
Compare the estimated average execution price with a clearly stated reference, such as the current midpoint, and calculate the difference as a percentage. Keep the comparison consistent: a result measured against the midpoint is not the same as one measured against the best ask. For a buy, the average fill may be above the midpoint because the buyer crosses the spread and consumes offers; the size of the order can add further price impact.

When evaluating a purchase, look at both the quoted price and the resulting amount received after costs. A quote that appears close to the chart price may still produce a meaningfully different total if the spread, price impact, and fees are included. Separate those components where possible, so you can see whether the main cost comes from crossing a wide spread, walking through several price levels, or paying transaction fees.

In practice, the estimate may not match the final execution if displayed liquidity changes, the market moves, or the order is only partly filled. S&P Global discusses slippage as size-sensitive and notes that large trades relative to available market or pool liquidity can produce a significant deviation from the expected outcome: S&P Global’s liquidity analysis.
There is no universal safe spread, minimum volume, sufficient depth, or acceptable slippage threshold established by these sources. Decide what execution cost you can tolerate, then test whether the exact order fits that limit in the market you can use. A quoted price without an order-size estimate cannot answer that question.
Assess liquidity on a DEX pool
Verify the pool, not just the token
On a DEX, identify the chain, token contract, paired asset, and exact pool. A token can trade in more than one pool, with different balances and execution conditions. The pool’s total value or displayed size alone does not tell you the price impact for your planned swap.
Automated market makers (AMMs) use pool balances and their pricing mechanics to determine the swap price. The swap’s effect depends on the amount you trade relative to the pool and on how that particular pool design works. For a v2 pool, Uniswap’s documentation explains that the pool is a smart-contract venue for a token pair and that someone must initially deposit both tokens before the pool can facilitate trades. Those details are specific to Uniswap v2, not a description of every AMM design: Uniswap Developers’ v2 pool documentation.
A pool balance is not interchangeable with order-book depth. An order book lists offers and bids at particular prices; an AMM quote is determined by the pool’s state and its own mechanics. Therefore, an aggregate pool-size figure does not by itself tell you how much of your intended swap will be returned at the displayed reference price.
Use the swap preview for the intended amount
Enter the amount you actually plan to spend and inspect the estimated amount of the other token you would receive. Consider the pool’s quoted price and price impact, applicable pool fees, and network costs. Use the swap estimate for the exact pool and route you would use; a pool’s aggregate size, or a quote for a different amount, is not a substitute.

A DEX estimate is still an estimate. The pool state can change before execution, and the final outcome may differ from the preview. Take care to distinguish any interface setting that limits acceptable slippage from the underlying estimate: a tolerance setting is a transaction constraint, not evidence that the pool is deep or that the quoted price is favorable. Do not treat a displayed setting or pool value as proof of a guaranteed fill.
Use trading volume cautiously
Trading volume reports activity over a past period; it does not measure how much you can execute now at a reasonable price. It can help you judge whether a market has traded consistently, but it should be corroborated with the live spread, depth, and a size-specific execution estimate.
Reported volume can also be misleading. Kraken warns that activity may be fabricated or inflated by wash trading—matched or offsetting trades that create reported volume without corresponding genuine liquidity. Volume can also be split among venues and pairs, so a high figure for one market does not tell you the depth in another. S&P Global’s work likewise finds material variation in activity across exchanges and pairs. Read volume as context, not a stand-alone liquidity verdict.
Even a genuine high-volume market does not prove that a particular order can execute near the current quote: the trades behind that total may have occurred earlier, at different prices, or in sizes that do not match yours. Treat volume as a clue about recent activity, then verify what is available in the specific market at the time you plan to trade.

If you have a genuine choice of venues or pools, make a like-for-like comparison. Use the same intended order size, a comparable measurement time, and consistent depth bands. Record what market each figure describes so that a pair, pool, or venue is not mistaken for the whole token market.

A venue with higher reported volume is not automatically the better choice for your order. Compare the estimated total execution cost and the evidence behind it. Include whether the venue or pool is actually available to you; an attractive quote on a market you cannot access does not help you execute.

Recheck shortly before buying
Liquidity is time-sensitive. Volatility, external events, venue conditions, and changing orders can alter spreads, depth, and expected slippage. A screenshot or volume statistic from earlier in the day is not a promise about the next order. Recheck the exact market and size close to execution, especially if conditions have become volatile or the displayed order book has been unstable.
S&P Global reports historical analysis covering January 1, 2023, through February 28, 2025, including selected Binance and Uniswap v3 markets. Those observations are tied to that period and those specific markets; they are not a current liquidity snapshot or a benchmark for an arbitrary token. Do not use historical sample figures as a substitute for checking the live market you intend to trade.
A practical pre-trade checklist
- Confirm the asset. Match the token identity; for a DEX, verify the chain and contract address.
- Specify the market. Record the venue or pool and the exact quote asset or paired token.
- Set your intended size. Estimate liquidity for the amount you plan to buy, not a generic or smaller amount.
- Measure the spread. Record the best bid and ask, midpoint, and spread percentage.
- Inspect relevant depth. Compare cumulative liquidity on both sides within a stated price band and assess whether displayed orders look stable.
- Preview execution. Estimate the average fill or DEX swap output for your amount, including applicable fees and network costs.
- Compare alternatives consistently. Use the same order size, time window, and depth bands across accessible markets.
- Recheck before placing the order. If conditions have changed, refresh the estimate rather than relying on an earlier quote.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 24-hour trading volume enough to tell whether a cryptocurrency is liquid?
No. Volume records past trading activity, not how much you can execute now at a reasonable price. It may also be inflated by wash trading or divided among different venues and pairs. Check the live spread, executable depth, and estimated fill for your planned order in the exact market.

How can I estimate slippage before buying?
Model your intended order against the current order book or the exact DEX pool. On an exchange, estimate the average price as the order consumes available offers; on a DEX, preview the swap output against the pool’s mechanics. Compare the result with a clearly stated reference price, and include relevant fees and network costs. The final execution can differ if conditions change.
Does a narrow bid–ask spread mean a token has enough liquidity?
Not necessarily. The best bid and ask show the immediate quoted spread, but there may be little quantity behind those top prices. Check cumulative depth within a stated band and estimate execution at your intended size; larger orders can consume multiple price levels.
How much spread or slippage is acceptable?
There is no universal threshold supported by the cited sources. The acceptable execution cost depends on your order size and your own tolerance. Compare the exact market’s estimated total cost—including spread, price impact, and fees—with the limit you are willing to accept.
What should I check before swapping a token on a DEX?
Verify the chain, token contract, paired asset, and exact pool. Preview the swap for the amount you intend to trade and review estimated output, price impact, pool fees, and network costs. A pool’s displayed size or a slippage-tolerance setting alone does not prove that the quote is favorable or that liquidity will remain available.

Treat it as a current estimate, not a guarantee. Exchange orders may be changed or canceled, and a DEX pool’s state may change before execution. Recheck close to trading, particularly during volatile conditions.

Before buying, assess liquidity for the exact token pair, venue or pool, and order size you will use. Check spread and depth, estimate the average fill or swap output with fees, and treat volume as context rather than proof.
