SpaceX has already gone public: its 2026 filings include IPO proceeds and post-IPO reporting. So the useful way to answer “How do I evaluate SpaceX’s financial health before it goes public?” now is to assess the company using those IPO-era disclosures—not to treat a listing as still pending. The filings show a business with a profitable Connectivity segment, substantial consolidated losses in 2025, large infrastructure investment, and sharply higher cash and debt after financing. Those facts need to be read together; no single revenue, cash, or backlog figure settles the question.
Start with the filed financial statements, not an old profit estimate
For the reported 2025 baseline, SpaceX’s prospectus gives revenue of $18.674 billion, an operating loss of $2.589 billion, and a GAAP net loss of $4.937 billion. The same recast series reported $791 million of net income in 2024. That is the starting point for judging the company’s financial condition: revenue grew to a large scale, but the company did not report a consolidated GAAP profit for 2025. The prospectus also reports $4.694 billion of revenue and a $4.276 billion net loss for the first quarter of 2026. SpaceX’s 2026 prospectus filing provides these figures.

Use the filed results instead of treating an earlier estimate as the final answer. A January 30, 2026 Reuters report, citing unnamed sources, estimated about $8 billion in profit on $15–16 billion of revenue for 2025. Those were pre-filing estimates; they differ materially from the later prospectus figures and should not be substituted for the company’s filed statements. Reuters’ January 2026 report is useful as context for why headlines may not match the subsequent filing, not as the controlling financial baseline.
Check which businesses are included in the numbers
The prospectus says SpaceX retrospectively recast historical results to include X.AI Holdings and X Holdings because the businesses were acquired under common control. As a result, its historical consolidated series has a broader reporting perimeter than older SpaceX-only figures. When comparing years, compare the recast figures with one another; do not combine an unrecast historical number with the prospectus series as if both described the same group.

This accounting perimeter matters especially when a company changes substantially through acquisitions. A rise or fall in consolidated revenue, costs, or earnings can reflect the businesses now included as well as underlying performance. A reader should therefore record the period, accounting basis, and entities included beside every figure being compared.
Keep GAAP results and adjusted EBITDA in separate lanes
Revenue, operating income or loss, and net income or loss are the core filed measures for evaluating profitability. Adjusted EBITDA is a supplemental, non-GAAP measure. It may help describe operating performance, but the prospectus cautions that definitions can vary among companies, limiting comparability. It does not erase interest expense, taxes, depreciation, capital intensity, or a GAAP loss. If you use it, read the company’s definition and reconciliation and compare it only with similarly defined measures.
Separate the profit-generating segment from the investment-heavy segments
SpaceX is not one uniform operating business. Recast segment data for 2025 show markedly different results: Connectivity generated operating income, while Space and AI reported operating losses. The measure in this table is segment income or loss from operations, not net income and not adjusted EBITDA.

| 2025 segment | Income (loss) from operations | What the figure tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Connectivity | $4.423 billion | Reported operating income for the segment. |
| Space | $(657) million | Reported operating loss for the segment. |
| AI | $(6.355) billion | Reported operating loss for the segment. |
The segment data are reproduced in Marex Financial’s 2026 UK retail-offer disclosure filed with the SEC. They help explain why a strong result in one part of the group does not automatically mean the consolidated company is profitable. Connectivity’s operating income is one important piece of the picture, but the other segments’ losses and the group’s reported expenses still matter.

Ask whether profitable operations can support the group’s plans
The practical question is not merely whether one segment makes money. It is whether the segment’s earnings, together with financing and other resources, can support the investments and operating requirements elsewhere in the group—and whether those investments ultimately produce enough revenue and returns. Segment operating income alone cannot answer that question: it is not the same as cash available to spend across the company, and it does not account for every consolidated expense or financing obligation.
SpaceX’s 2026 second-quarter filing describes ongoing investment in Starship and AI infrastructure. It attributes increased research and development spending in the first half of 2026 to AI infrastructure and cloud-computing costs as well as investment in Starship. The company also reported much higher capital expenditures, primarily tied to data centers, launch facilities, space facilities, and related infrastructure. These investments may reflect strategic choices, but their scale makes execution, funding, and eventual returns central parts of a financial-health assessment. The Form 10-Q for the six months ended June 30, 2026 discusses these spending drivers.
Read cash, debt, and leases together—and keep the dates visible
A cash balance is a point-in-time resource, not proof that day-to-day operations generated that money. SpaceX’s disclosures show a substantial change between March 31 and June 30, 2026, amid IPO and note proceeds. The two dates reflect different financing conditions and should never be presented as a like-for-like operating trend.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| As of | Cash and cash equivalents | Short-term marketable securities | Aggregate principal indebtedness | Minimum lease payments |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| March 31, 2026 | $15.852 billion | $7.823 billion | $29 billion | $5.823 billion |
| June 30, 2026 | $93.522 billion | Not stated in the cited summary; see the Form 10-Q | $38.433 billion | Not stated in the cited summary; see the Form 10-Q |
March figures are from the Marex disclosure; June figures are from the June 30 Form 10-Q. The higher June cash balance followed IPO and note proceeds, while principal indebtedness also increased. That combination can improve near-term liquidity while leaving the company with more debt to service. It is not evidence, by itself, that recurring operations funded the increase in cash or can fund future growth.

Look beyond the cash total
For a useful liquidity assessment, set cash and liquid investments beside obligations and expected spending. In addition to principal debt, include interest costs, debt maturities, leases, contractual commitments, and future capital expenditures where disclosed. A company can have considerable cash and still face large demands on it. Conversely, a high debt balance alone does not reveal near-term repayment pressure without the maturity schedule, interest burden, and available liquidity.
The June filing said there were no material principal payments due under SpaceX Notes until July 15, 2031, while also reporting scheduled principal maturities across other debt in intervening years. Treat this as a maturity-profile detail, not as a claim that the company has no debt payments before 2031: the disclosure distinguishes SpaceX Notes from other debt. Read the relevant schedules in the Form 10-Q before judging how much cash is genuinely available after obligations.
Test operating cash flow against investment spending
For the six months ended June 30, 2026, SpaceX reported $3.466 billion of net cash provided by operating activities, compared with $351 million in the first half of 2025. Management said operating cash flow increased by $3.115 billion between those periods. The company attributed much of the improvement to lower net loss excluding non-cash items and a $1.489 billion increase in deferred-revenue working capital tied to upfront customer payments; movements in receivables and payables partially offset the improvement. The company’s Form 10-Q provides the cash-flow discussion.

Customer cash received up front can support current operating cash flow, while the related work and revenue recognition may occur later. Capital expenditures rose by $21.511 billion year over year in the first half of 2026, according to the filing, primarily in connection with data centers and space infrastructure. This is the reported year-over-year increase, not a stated total for first-half capital expenditure. Compare operating cash flow with the actual capital expenditure figures in the filing, then consider financing cash flows and proceeds from share issuance or notes. Operating cash flow on its own cannot show whether growth is internally funded when infrastructure spending is so large.
Be precise if calculating free cash flow. There is no single universal presentation that should be silently assumed here. State the formula, period, and source values—for example, if using operating cash flow minus capital expenditures—and apply the same definition to every period being compared. Do not call operating cash flow “free cash flow,” or use a cash increase that includes financing proceeds as if it were cash generated by operations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use backlog as a visibility measure, not a substitute for earnings
At March 31, 2026, SpaceX reported backlog of $27.621 billion, of which $13.236 billion was recognized as deferred revenue. The disclosure said roughly 36% of backlog was expected to be recognized within one year and roughly 46% between one and three years. SpaceX defines backlog as agreed customer work not yet completed, subject to stated exclusions, and gives an expected recognition schedule in the Marex retail-offer disclosure.
Backlog is evidence of contracted activity and can help indicate possible future revenue timing. It is not cash in hand, recognized revenue, or assurance that all work will be delivered on schedule or profitably. Deferred revenue represents a different accounting measure from the remainder of backlog; it should not be added to backlog as if it were a separate pool of future contracts. To assess the quality of the signal, read the definition and exclusions, expected recognition schedule, and available information about contract types and customer concentration.

Growth measures are most useful when paired with margins, cash conversion, segment economics, and the spending required to deliver the contracted work. SpaceX’s first-quarter 2026 revenue of $4.694 billion accompanied a net loss of $4.276 billion, according to the prospectus. A large revenue figure or backlog can describe scale and demand; neither by itself demonstrates that the business is financially strong.
A practical checklist for evaluating the company
Use the same period and reporting perimeter throughout your analysis. For each period, collect the filed figures rather than mixing prospectus data, later quarterly results, and older estimates. Then work through the questions below.
- What is the baseline? Record revenue, operating income or loss, and net income or loss on a GAAP basis. Note the period and the entities included in the consolidated statements.
- Where does the operating result come from? Separate segment income or loss from the consolidated result. Identify which segments generate operating income and which are consuming it.
- Is cash coming from operations or financing? Separate operating, investing, and financing cash flows. Note working-capital movements, including upfront customer payments, that affect cash timing.
- How much investment is required? Track capital expenditures and research and development, their stated drivers, and whether investment is rising faster than operating cash generation.
- Can liquidity cover obligations and plans? Compare cash and marketable securities with principal debt, interest, maturities, leases, contractual obligations, and expected infrastructure spending.
- How reliable is the growth visibility? For backlog, review the company’s definition, what is included or excluded, the timing of expected recognition, and whether delivery economics are disclosed.
- What does the share price imply? Compare valuation with earnings, operating cash flow, and capital requirements using a dated market price and consistent financial periods. A company can have improving liquidity and growth prospects while still being expensive at a given share price.
When comparing SpaceX with public aerospace, satellite-connectivity, or capital-intensive technology businesses, use consistent periods and accounting boundaries. Compare segment revenue and operating margins where disclosed; GAAP operating and net results; clearly defined adjusted EBITDA, if relevant; operating cash flow, working-capital dependence, and capital expenditures; cash and liquid investments against debt maturities, interest, and leases; and backlog conversion timing. Also assess what results the company expects its AI and Starship investment to produce, rather than treating spending as inherently good or bad.

What the figures establish—and what they do not
The disclosures support a mixed assessment. SpaceX reported large 2025 revenue and a segment with substantial operating income, but the recast consolidated statements showed a significant GAAP net loss. The first-half 2026 operating cash flow improvement is encouraging as a cash-flow fact, but it included a material deferred-revenue working-capital contribution. At the same time, capital expenditure and research and development rose as the company invested in AI and space infrastructure. Post-IPO cash provides liquidity, but it arrived alongside increased principal indebtedness and should be distinguished from operational cash generation.
The filings do not, by themselves, establish whether the public shares are attractively priced. That requires a verified share price for a particular date and a valuation analysis tied to consistent financial figures and assumptions. A sound evaluation can describe the company’s operating results, cash needs, and obligations without turning those facts into an unsupported fair-value conclusion or personalized investment recommendation.
