Evaluate a quantum-computing stock by testing four things together: what its technology has demonstrably achieved, whether customers are paying for it, how long its finances can support development, and what the share price assumes about the future. Treat company roadmaps as targets—not results—and compare evidence on the same basis and date.

Start by identifying what the company actually sells

“Quantum-computing company” does not describe one uniform business. A company may sell quantum hardware, cloud access to systems, professional services, application development, or a combination. Some technology companies also have quantum initiatives while earning much of their revenue from other businesses.

  • Hardware and system sales: Look for delivered systems, customer acceptance, and revenue recognition—not just an announced order.
  • Cloud access and services: Check whether customers pay to use quantum systems, receive consulting, or buy application support, and how much revenue each activity contributes.
  • Other business lines: Read segment disclosures before assuming that quantum-computing prospects explain the whole stock. IonQ, for example, describes revenue sources that include quantum products and services as well as satellite imagery and data in its company filing.

D-Wave’s 2025 Form 10-K describes revenue from quantum-computing-as-a-service, professional services, and system sales. The mix matters: recurring usage, a one-off system sale, and consulting revenue can imply different customer relationships and growth patterns.

Judge technical progress by evidence, not a headline qubit count

A larger qubit count is not, by itself, proof that a system can solve more useful problems. The relevant measures depend on the architecture and intended workload, and they need context about how and by whom they were measured.

For gate-model systems

Examine physical and logical qubit counts, two-qubit gate fidelity, gate speed, coherence, system scale, and error-correction results. Ask whether the result came from independent evaluation or the company’s own testing, and whether the reported metric applies to the full system or a particular component or configuration.

Rigetti’s March 2026 Form 10-Q reports a median two-qubit gate fidelity of 99.1% and gate speed of approximately 60 nanoseconds for the cited system, explicitly based on internal testing. Those are company-reported measurements; they should not be presented as independent validation or as proof of a practical advantage on a customer workload.

For annealing systems

Assess performance on clearly described optimization tasks against suitable classical methods. The problem size, constraints, data preparation, classical processing, and business requirements all affect whether a result is useful. A comparison that omits these details may not tell an investor whether the system offers an advantage in practice.

Keep architectures and claims comparable

Do not rank an annealing system and a gate-model system by qubit count alone: they use different approaches and target different workloads. For any benchmark, ask what problem was solved, whether the result can be reproduced, whether the comparison was fair, and whether a useful advantage remains after data encoding, error correction, and classical processing.

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), in a June 2026 presentation, noted that potential quantum speedups apply to specific financial-industry problems, while also describing current limitations in hardware scale and stability and the challenge of encoding data into quantum states. The existence of a promising use case is not the same as broad, near-term commercial readiness.

Separate achieved milestones from roadmap targets

Label each technical statement according to what it establishes. A useful evidence hierarchy distinguishes an independently evaluated result, a company-reported result, a customer case study, a management target, and an aspirational claim. These categories should not be blended together in a stock comparison.

In an August 2026 results release, Rigetti set targets of approximately 1,000 qubits, approximately 99.9% two-qubit gate fidelity, and gate speeds below 50 nanoseconds over roughly three years. These are forward-looking management targets, not achieved capabilities or a guaranteed delivery schedule. A roadmap can show what management intends to build; it does not establish that the technical, financial, or commercial milestones will be met.

Test whether commercial activity is turning into customer adoption

Announcements that sound similar can represent very different stages of a sale. A paid deployment and recognized revenue provide different evidence from a pilot, booking, backlog, grant, research collaboration, partnership, or letter of intent.

Disclosure What it establishes What it does not establish
Rigetti’s $8.4 million purchase order, disclosed in its 2026 Form 10-K, for a 108-qubit system for India’s C-DAC A reported order; the filing said deployment was expected in the second half of 2026. The cited disclosure does not establish that deployment or customer acceptance had occurred.
Rigetti’s later-reported letter of intent for up to $100 million in government funding A stated funding intention, subject to the terms and conditions of the arrangement. A letter of intent is not the same as cash received or revenue recognized.

For any contract or award, check the amount, funding source, conditions, delivery timing, cancellation rights, acceptance milestones, and accounting treatment. Then look for subsequent company filings or announcements that confirm whether the work was delivered and revenue recognized.

Read revenue alongside losses, cash use, and possible dilution

Revenue growth alone does not show whether a company can finance the work needed to reach its technical and commercial goals. Review several periods of revenue and gross margin alongside operating cash use, cash and short-term investments, debt and commitments, stock-based compensation, share counts, and financing history. Consider customer concentration and whether revenue relies on non-recurring government or development contracts.

Company disclosure Reported figure How to interpret it
D-Wave Quantum Inc., fiscal 2025, in its 2026 Form 10-K $24.6 million revenue; $100.4 million operating loss Revenue should be read in the context of operating costs and the company’s stated expectation of continuing significant losses.
D-Wave Quantum Inc., fiscal 2025, in its 2026 Form 10-K $355.1 million net loss, including $270.5 million in warrant mark-to-market charges The net loss was substantially affected by valuation-related charges. It is not a stand-alone measure of operating performance or cash needs.
Rigetti Computing, Inc., March 2026 Form 10-Q The filing describes continuing operating losses, expected additional losses, and a multi-year investment commitment associated with its Quanta collaboration. Review the filing’s liquidity details and share-count developments rather than inferring runway from a partnership headline.

D-Wave’s filing says the company expects significant losses to continue as it invests in research and development and go-to-market initiatives. For either company, estimate how long available resources could support the plan, but treat any runway calculation as assumption-dependent: spending, contract timing, and access to new capital can change.

Financing matters to existing shareholders as well as to the company. If development requires more capital, a company may issue shares or use other financing that changes the claims of existing shareholders. Track basic and diluted share counts across filings; do not assume a prominent partnership or funding announcement removes that risk.

Put valuation next to the milestones the stock price requires

For a company with little or no profit, price-to-earnings comparisons may not be useful. Compare market capitalization and enterprise value with current revenue, gross profit, cash consumption, and plausible future milestones, using consistent dates and accounting definitions across companies.

A large projected market is not enough to justify a valuation. The investment case also depends on which workloads can be served, whether customers will pay, what alternatives they have, what margins are possible, how much infrastructure costs, and whether further financing could dilute shareholders. These assumptions are uncertain, so distinguish a scenario from an established financial result.

ESMA’s June 2026 presentation reported that the combined market capitalization of four U.S.-listed quantum-computing companies temporarily exceeded $65 billion in 2025 and was $45 billion as of May 27, 2026. Those are dated aggregate figures for four companies—not a current valuation of any individual stock or evidence that a particular share is cheap or expensive. ESMA also reported record 2025 quantum-computing startup venture funding of €2 billion in the U.S. and €950 million in the EU, drawing on the presentation’s stated data coverage. Startup funding is ecosystem context, not public-company revenue.

Compare companies on the same questions

There is no single metric that ranks every architecture or predicts shareholder returns. Use the same checklist for each candidate, while allowing for differences in technology and business model:

  • Architecture and workload: What type of system is it, and what problems is it designed to address?
  • Demonstrated capability: What system scale and performance have been shown, and is the evidence independently evaluated or company-reported?
  • Access and software: Can customers use the system, and what software, accessibility, and compatibility with classical workflows are available?
  • Customer evidence: Is there paid use, a delivered system, recognized revenue, or only an earlier-stage commercial announcement?
  • Financial quality: What are the revenue mix, customer concentration, losses, cash requirements, and potential sources of dilution?
  • Price and risk: What future milestones are reflected in the valuation, and what could happen if they are delayed or missed?

Rigetti’s 2026 Form 10-K identifies factors such as scale, speed, fidelity, accessibility, supported software, compatibility with classical workflows, price, and financial resources as relevant competitive considerations. Applying a consistent set of questions makes the comparison more useful than picking whichever company has the most striking headline metric.

Include portfolio concentration in the decision

A single stock exposes an investor to company-specific risks as well as the wider uncertainties of the sector. A fund may spread exposure across holdings, but its concentration, holdings, fees, and overlap with investments already in a portfolio still matter. ESMA’s June 2026 presentation reports that quantum-focused ETFs exist in European and U.S. markets, but the information available here does not establish current fund names, holdings, fees, or availability.

The SEC’s Investor Bulletin, “Behavioral Patterns of U.S. Investors” (June 16, 2014), states that inadequate diversification increases portfolio risk exposure. Diversification can reduce the effect of a single holding; it cannot eliminate market risk or guarantee a return.

Use a decision rule before acting

Write down what evidence would change your view: a technical result independently reproduced, a customer system accepted and paid for, improving financial performance, or a valuation that no longer depends on an optimistic chain of assumptions. Then check the latest filings and dated announcements against those criteria. If the case rests mainly on a long-range roadmap, a broad market forecast, or an announcement whose funding or delivery status is unclear, treat that uncertainty as part of the investment risk—not as proof of future success.
