What the rally says—and what it does not
Alea Research reported that an equal-weight basket of SanDisk, Micron, Western Digital and Seagate returned 511% from October 1, 2025, through August 26, 2026. The basket’s constituents did not move alike:
| Company | Return from October 1, 2025, through August 26, 2026 |
|---|---|
| SanDisk | 1,140% |
| Micron | 416% |
| Western Digital | 259.6% |
| Seagate | 231.2% |
These are Alea Research’s figures for that specific period, not performance through October 7, 2026. The sharp rise was broad but uneven. A stock’s past return cannot establish whether it is cheap or expensive now; that requires current prices and comparable valuation data, which these figures do not provide.
Start with what each company sells
“Memory and storage” describes related but distinct businesses. Micron’s SEC filing describes DRAM as volatile memory used in data centers, PCs, graphics, mobile, industrial and automotive markets; high-bandwidth memory (HBM) is a stacked DRAM architecture. NAND is nonvolatile storage used in SSDs and other markets. The mix of products and end customers matters when judging earnings and risk.

|---|---|---|
| Micron (MU) | DRAM, including HBM, NAND and storage products. | In its fiscal Q3 2026 filing, Micron said AI-driven data-center demand for memory and storage was growing faster than industry supply, with constrained supply contributing to higher prices and improved profitability. In its fiscal Q4 2026 release, it reported gross margins of 83% in Cloud Memory and 90% in Core Data Center. Test how product mix, pricing, supply and capital spending could affect earnings if conditions change. |
| Western Digital (WDC) | Storage business after its Flash business was separated into Sandisk in February 2025. | Fiscal Q4 2026 revenue was $3.75 billion, up 44% year over year; GAAP gross margin was 54.1%, GAAP diluted EPS was $8.21 and operating cash flow was $1.39 billion. Its fiscal Q1 2027 revenue guidance was $4.1 billion, plus or minus $100 million, on a non-GAAP basis. Assess storage demand, margins, cash generation, customer concentration and debt; do not combine post-separation WDC results with Sandisk’s. |
| Seagate (STX) | Mass-capacity data storage, including exposure to cloud demand. | For fiscal 2026, Seagate reported revenue of $12.2 billion, GAAP gross margin of 45.6%, GAAP diluted EPS of $13.90 and free cash flow of $3.1 billion. It reported $3.6 billion of debt at fiscal year-end and guided to fiscal Q1 2027 revenue of $4.1 billion, plus or minus $100 million. Examine demand durability, cash generation, debt reduction and capital returns. |
| Sandisk (SNDK) | Flash business separated from Western Digital in February 2025. | The Western Digital release confirms the separation, not Sandisk’s latest standalone valuation. Analyze it using Sandisk’s own dated accounts and current market data rather than treating WDC’s post-separation results as a proxy. |
The figures in company reports describe different fiscal periods and businesses; they are not a like-for-like ranking of the stocks.
Separate a strong cycle from normalized earnings
Micron’s report that demand was running ahead of supply is evidence of current conditions as described by the company, not proof that shortages or elevated pricing will last. Tight supply can support pricing and margins, while unusually high margins can make trailing earnings a poor guide to what a business earns across a full cycle. That is a scenario to test, not a prediction that prices or margins must fall.
Use a mid-cycle view of earnings and free cash flow rather than simply extending the latest quarter. In particular, examine:
- Pricing and utilization: How much of margin improvement depends on constrained supply, and how would cash generation look if pricing or factory utilization retreated?
- Product mix and contracts: Are stronger results tied to a more profitable mix, contract terms, or broader demand? Consider whether those drivers are likely to persist.
- Investment needs: What spending is needed to add capacity and maintain technology leadership, and how does that affect free cash flow through the cycle?
- Balance sheet and dilution: Compare cash, debt, share count and capital returns alongside EPS. A company’s debt and investment requirements can make equal earnings figures mean different things for shareholders.
Compare valuation on a consistent basis
Do not infer value from the size of a rally or from one quarter’s earnings. Compare enterprise value and equity value with normalized mid-cycle earnings and free cash flow. Enterprise value accounts for debt and cash as well as equity value, which helps when businesses have different balance sheets. Use comparable dates and definitions, and distinguish GAAP results from non-GAAP measures; when a company reports both, check which items its non-GAAP measure adjusts.

For a practical comparison, estimate what each business could earn and generate in cash under a more ordinary operating environment, then compare those estimates with its current valuation. The available company results and dated return series do not establish October 7, 2026 share prices, consensus estimates or comparable current multiples for these companies. They therefore do not support a claim that one is the cheapest or a target price.

The fiscal Q1 2027 guidance figures in the company comparison are management forecasts. Western Digital and Seagate both identify uncertainties that could affect results; Western Digital lists demand volatility, competition and pricing, supply-chain execution, debt and customer relationships among risks to its outlook. Seagate says its guidance rests on current assumptions and may differ materially from actual results. It also says future dividends depend on its financial position, cash flow, capital requirements and other factors.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Seagate CEO Dave Mosley said in the company’s July 28, 2026 earnings release: “Our performance is being driven by robust cloud data center demand and disciplined execution, and we see the momentum continuing in 2027.” That is management’s view, not independent confirmation or a guarantee. The release also said Seagate sees long-term demand for mass-capacity storage as AI accelerates data generation and its value.

A decision checklist for investors
- Define the business: Identify the company’s product mix and end markets, and keep Sandisk separate from Western Digital after the 2025 separation.
- Identify the earnings drivers: Distinguish demand, product mix, contract terms and supply constraints rather than attributing all growth to AI.
- Stress-test the cycle: Consider how profits and free cash flow might change if pricing or utilization eased, without assuming that they necessarily will.
- Account for investment and financing: Compare capacity and technology spending, cash, debt, share count and capital returns.
- Value normalized results: Use mid-cycle earnings and cash flow, consistent valuation dates, and clearly labeled GAAP and non-GAAP measures.
- Check the evidence date: Treat historical returns as historical, and guidance as a forecast for its stated fiscal period.
