Evaluate Broadcom as two businesses with different growth drivers and risks: AI semiconductors, where reported demand has surged but manufacturing and customer timing matter, and VMware-based infrastructure software, where reported growth needs to be tested against customer acceptance, renewals and subscription economics. Then check whether growth is translating into operating income and cash flow, whether debt is manageable, and how much of the case rests on management forecasts rather than completed results.
Start by separating the two businesses
Broadcom reports two principal segments: Semiconductor Solutions and Infrastructure Software. They are related parts of one company, but they should not be evaluated as if they have the same demand cycle or execution risks. AI accelerators and networking are central to the semiconductor growth story; VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) is a significant driver cited for infrastructure software.
For scale, Broadcom reported FY2025 net revenue of $63.887 billion: $36.858 billion from Semiconductor Solutions and $27.029 billion from Infrastructure Software. These are full-year figures from Broadcom’s 2025 Form 10-K, filed December 18, 2025. They are not directly comparable to a single quarter’s results.
What the latest results say about AI semiconductors
For the quarter ended August 2, 2026, Broadcom reported consolidated revenue of $29.591 billion, up 86% year over year. AI semiconductor revenue was $16.7 billion, up 221% year over year and 54% quarter over quarter. Broadcom said custom AI accelerators and networking drove that growth in its September 2, 2026 results release.

These figures establish rapid recent growth, not how durable or broadly distributed it will be. To assess the business, look beyond the headline growth rate:
- Demand breadth and timing: Determine whether demand is sustained across customers and quarters. The company’s FY2025 filing identifies customer losses and changes in the timing or volume of demand as risks.
- Production execution: Custom chips and networking products must be delivered at the required scale and quality. Broadcom identifies reliance on contract manufacturers and a limited number of suppliers, along with capacity and quality, as risks.
- Competitive position: Winning future semiconductor business is not guaranteed by current orders or growth. Broadcom lists competition and its ability to continue winning business among the risks in its annual filing.
- Profit and cash conversion: Compare segment operating income and margins with revenue growth, and distinguish GAAP results from any non-GAAP measures. The figures summarized here do not establish segment operating income or margins, so those should be checked in the company’s full financial statements rather than inferred from revenue.
Treat the Q4 outlook as a forecast
On September 2, 2026, management projected Q4 FY2026 consolidated revenue of $34.8 billion and AI semiconductor revenue of $21.7 billion. Those are forecasts, not reported results. An evaluation should keep them separate from the completed Q3 figures and later verify them against the reported quarter.
How to assess VMware and infrastructure software
Infrastructure Software generated $27.029 billion in FY2025. Broadcom attributed its growth primarily to strong VCF demand, including revenue recognized under certain non-terminable contracts and the transition to a subscription license model, according to its FY2025 Form 10-K.
That explanation makes revenue important, but not sufficient to establish how customers feel about the transition or whether the business can retain them over time. Separate the following questions:

- Revenue recognition versus customer behavior: Revenue recognized under a contract is not itself a renewal rate or a measure of customer satisfaction.
- Renewals and retention: Look for evidence of customer renewal behavior and churn. The cited FY2025 filing does not establish an independent renewal or churn rate.
- Subscription economics: Assess realized pricing and the recurring nature of subscription revenue, not just the change in licensing model.
- Product fit and competition: Broadcom identifies software customer acceptance, virtualization demand, compatibility, licensing agreements, product lifecycle management and software competitiveness as risks.
In August 2026, Broadcom introduced VMware Private AI Cloud and positioned VCF as a platform for deploying and governing AI workloads on private infrastructure. That is Broadcom’s product positioning; without independent customer or third-party evidence, promised benefits should not be treated as demonstrated outcomes.
Compare the businesses on a like-for-like basis
Use the same analytical questions for both segments, while allowing for their different business models. Keep each period and measure explicit: annual segment revenue is not a quarterly run rate, and consolidated cash flow does not show how much cash each segment generated.

Check whether growth is converting into cash
Broadcom reported Q3 FY2026 cash from operations of $14.2 billion and free cash flow of $13.7 billion after $0.5 billion in capital expenditures. The company said free cash flow equaled 46% of revenue for that quarter. These are consolidated quarterly figures, not segment-level cash flows.
Cash generation helps assess whether reported growth is accompanied by cash available for investment, debt service and other uses. For a fuller view, compare cash from operations and capital expenditures across periods, and examine how working capital and other cash-flow items affect the result. Do not assume one quarter’s conversion rate will persist.

Pressure-test debt, concentration and capital allocation
Growth does not remove balance-sheet risk. Broadcom’s FY2025 filing identifies debt service, integration and acquisition risks alongside operating and market risks. Assess debt service capacity against recurring cash generation, upcoming obligations and the company’s other uses of cash; the figures above are not enough to calculate a complete debt-service assessment.
Also consider where the company is exposed to a small number of customers or suppliers. A concentrated customer base can make results sensitive to changes in order timing or volume, while reliance on a limited number of suppliers can constrain production. These are risks named by Broadcom, not evidence that a specific customer loss or supply disruption has occurred.
Build a conclusion from reported evidence, not just the AI narrative
A disciplined evaluation separates four things: results already reported, management’s outlook, accounting or licensing effects, and risks that could change future performance. Broadcom’s Q3 figures show substantial recent AI semiconductor growth and strong consolidated cash generation; its FY2025 filing describes VCF demand as a primary infrastructure software growth driver. Neither set of figures alone establishes future growth, software renewal behavior, segment profitability or a fair value for the shares.
Broadcom’s Q4 FY2026 outlook is management guidance, while its filing lists risks affecting both segments. Compare later reported results with that guidance, and update the assessment using segment operating income, customer evidence, supplier and capacity developments, software renewal indicators and debt obligations. The materials cited here do not establish an independent valuation or a buy-or-sell conclusion.
