Before depositing money, verify the exact company behind the app, establish who controls the crypto, read the custody and service terms, calculate the full cost of your planned transactions, and confirm that the exact asset and network can be withdrawn on terms you can accept. An app’s feature list is not a substitute for checking each service separately. Regulatory requirements and protections depend on your country and on what the provider actually does.
Start with the legal entity and your country’s regulator
Find the provider’s full legal name in the app’s terms, not just its brand name or the name shown on a payment screen. An app can involve multiple companies—for example, one company may operate the interface while another provides custody or trading. Identify which entity is responsible for each service you plan to use, and check those entities in the relevant regulator’s own records.

Match the registration or authorization to the service
Search the regulator’s official register using the legal entity name, then confirm that the result matches the company and activity described in the app’s current terms. A similar name, a group company, or a registration for a different activity is not enough to establish that the specific service you intend to use is covered. If the app does not clearly identify the provider, or the regulator’s record does not match, resolve that discrepancy before sending funds.

It is not an endorsement of the business or its products. The FCA also says that crypto customers do not receive Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) or Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) protection simply because a cryptoasset business is registered. Do not treat a register entry as a guarantee that you can recover funds if a provider fails or you have a dispute.

The UK rules described in the FCA’s June 2026 policy overview are not a single regime already in force for every app. The overview says that the broader regime it describes will apply to firms granted permission under the Financial Services and Markets Act (FSMA) on or after 25 October 2027. Check the status that applies to the specific firm and service now; do not infer that a future regime already covers an app.
For an EU user, MiCA requirements apply according to the regulation’s scope and the provider’s activity. FCA registration rules are UK-specific, and MiCA is not a universal rule for apps used elsewhere. If you are outside the UK or EU, use the relevant local regulator’s records and consumer-protection rules rather than assuming either framework applies.
Identify who holds the crypto and controls the keys
Ask whether the provider holds the crypto and controls the private keys, or whether you genuinely control the assets yourself. If the provider controls the keys, you generally depend on its systems and processes to access or move the crypto. The app may show a balance without giving you direct control over the underlying keys; check the terms and withdrawal process rather than relying on interface labels such as “wallet.”

Questions to ask about custody
- Which legal entity holds or safeguards the crypto?
- Who controls the private keys or can authorize transfers?
- Do the terms describe your rights to the crypto, or only a claim against the provider?
- How does the provider record each client’s holdings and transactions?
- What security arrangements and custody policies does it describe?
- What happens to access and withdrawals during an outage, account restriction, provider failure, or dispute?
Do not assume that “self-custody” means you control the keys. FCA Handbook guidance says a provider claiming to offer self-custody must be able to demonstrate that it has no means to bring about a transfer of the cryptoasset benefit. If the provider can authorize or arrange a transfer, ask it to explain precisely what control you have and whether its description matches the FCA’s standard. That UK guidance is not automatically the legal test in every country.

Read the custody agreement, not just the security page
Read the current client agreement and any separate custody terms before transferring assets. Look for the rights attached to your assets, the provider’s role, its records, security arrangements, fees, and what happens if service is interrupted or the relationship ends. A security page may describe safeguards, but it does not replace contractual terms explaining what the provider owes you and what you can do if access is disrupted.
MiCA Article 75 provides a useful EU benchmark for covered crypto-asset custody and administration services: the agreement describes custody, security, and fees, while custodians keep client position records and establish custody policies aimed at reducing loss risks. Whether those requirements apply depends on jurisdiction, provider status, and activity. Outside their scope, use them as questions to ask—not as a claim that every app is legally required to meet them.
Separate the app’s services and their risks
“All-in-one” describes a bundle of features, not one uniform service. Trading, holding crypto, staking, lending, and other features can have different terms, providers, and risks. Evaluate only the functions you actually expect to use, and identify the legal entity and agreement governing each one. An app’s availability of an extra feature does not establish that it is covered by the same authorization or protections as another feature.
For every service, check what you must provide, what the provider does, how you can stop or withdraw, what fees apply, and what may prevent access. If terms for a feature are missing, unclear, or held in a different agreement you have not reviewed, do not treat the feature as understood merely because it appears in the same app.

The FCA’s June 2026 policy overview describes a future UK regime covering different types of cryptoasset activity. Its stated timing—firms granted FSMA permission on or after 25 October 2027—matters when assessing what regulatory framework applies. It does not mean that every bundled service in an app is already covered by that future regime.
Calculate the cost of the use you actually plan
Do not compare apps by a headline trading charge alone. Work out the costs for your intended route: putting in fiat, buying or selling the asset, holding it if there is a custody fee, and withdrawing either fiat or crypto. The total depends on the provider, asset, amount, payment method, and—when moving crypto—the network route.
Build a transaction-by-transaction cost checklist
- Purchase and sale price: Check whether the quoted price includes a spread or other difference between the displayed market price and the price you receive.
- Trading charges: Check the fee for the order type and amount you intend to use, including any minimum charge or pricing tier stated in the terms.
- Custody: Check whether holding the asset incurs a charge and when it is applied.
- Fiat funding: Check deposits or purchases funded by the payment route you plan to use.
- Fiat withdrawal: Check the charge and any relevant conditions for returning money to your bank or payment method.
- Crypto withdrawal: Check the withdrawal fee for the specific asset and network. Do not assume it is the same as a trading fee or that every network is supported.
Use the app’s current fee schedule and the order preview for the specific transaction, where available. Record the amount you plan to deposit, the asset and order type, the payment route, and the withdrawal route. Compare those same inputs across any apps you are considering; otherwise, differences in the chosen route can make the apparent price comparison misleading. If a fee or spread is not clear before you commit, ask the provider how the final amount is calculated rather than estimating it.

For covered trading platforms, MiCA Article 76 requires crypto-asset service providers operating a crypto-asset trading platform to ensure their fee structures are transparent, fair, and non-discriminatory. This is an EU requirement within MiCA’s scope, not a universal rule for every crypto app. It does not tell you what a particular provider charges; check the current schedule for your planned activity.

Verify the asset, network, and withdrawal path
Before funding an account, confirm that the exact asset and network you want to use are supported for both deposits and withdrawals. A token name alone is not enough to identify a transfer route: the app’s deposit instructions and withdrawal settings must match the asset and network you intend to use. Never assume that support for buying an asset means the app lets you withdraw it to an external address.
Check these transfer conditions before sending
- Is the asset supported for the action you need—buying, depositing, holding, or withdrawing?
- Which networks are available for that exact asset, and do they match the destination you intend to use?
- What deposit instructions does the app provide, and are there any asset-specific requirements?
- What withdrawal limits, account holds, or verification steps may apply?
- What fees apply to the chosen network, and can the provider change the route or fee?
- Can you withdraw when you need to, or are withdrawals subject to stated restrictions or processing conditions?
Do not assume a transfer will be immediate or that the same limits apply to every customer or asset. The provider’s terms and in-app instructions are the relevant place to check its current rules; the information available here does not establish timings or limits for any particular app.
If you choose to make a small operational test before a larger transfer, treat it only as a way to check that you followed the stated route and instructions. A successful test does not guarantee future availability, prevent a later hold, or establish that the provider is financially sound. There is no universal test amount: use an amount that makes sense for the asset, fees, and your circumstances, and follow the provider’s current instructions.
Compare apps on identical criteria
If you are considering more than one app, compare the same intended activity and transaction route in each. This keeps the decision focused on evidence you can verify rather than the number of features, the app’s presentation, or a headline fee.

| What to compare | Evidence to check | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Provider and regulatory status | Exact legal entity, country, regulator record, and the activity covered | Does the record match the company and service you intend to use? |
| Custody and asset rights | Key control, custody agreement, rights to assets, client records, security arrangements, and interruption terms | Do you understand who controls transfers and what rights you have? |
| Protections | Applicable local protections and their stated limits | Are you avoiding assumptions based only on registration or an app’s branding? |
| Total cost | Price or spread, trading charge, custody fee, fiat funding and withdrawal costs, and crypto network fee | What would the full planned funding, trade, holding, and withdrawal route cost? |
| Asset and network support | Supported asset, supported deposit and withdrawal networks, and current instructions | Can you use the precise route you need? |
| Withdrawal process | Availability, limits, holds, verification steps, fees, and provider-stated conditions | Can you accept the conditions that could affect access to your assets? |
Keep the answers specific: note the entity name, the relevant agreement or fee schedule, and the regulator record you checked. If information is absent, record that it is not stated rather than assuming that a standard practice applies. A comparison cannot establish which app is safest or predict how a provider will perform; it can show which material terms are clear, comparable, and acceptable to you.
Decide what to do when an answer is missing
Pause before depositing if you cannot establish who provides the service, who controls the crypto, what rights the terms give you, how the full transaction is charged, or whether your intended withdrawal route is supported. Ask the provider for a direct explanation and check whether the written terms or official regulator record confirm it. A reassuring support reply does not resolve a contradiction in the contract or regulatory record.
- Entity or regulator mismatch: Do not rely on a similarly named company or group affiliate. Confirm the exact legal entity and covered activity.
- Unclear custody: Ask who can authorize a transfer and which agreement governs the assets. Do not infer self-custody from a wallet label.
- Unclear fees: Get the full cost for your planned funding, trade, holding, and withdrawal route before proceeding.
- Unclear transfer support: Confirm the exact asset and network, plus any relevant limits, holds, or verification requirements.
- Unclear protections: Check the regulator’s explanation for your country. Do not treat registration as an endorsement or assume it creates compensation rights.
When self-custody is an alternative
If your priority is to control the crypto directly rather than leave it with a custodial provider, self-custody is an alternative to assess. It is not necessary for evaluating an app, and it brings its own responsibility: you need to understand who controls the keys and how transfers are authorized. A provider’s claim that it offers self-custody should be tested against the FCA Handbook guidance for UK purposes; a device or “wallet” label by itself does not establish that the provider has no means to transfer the cryptoasset benefit.
