Before connecting an AI agent to your files, email, financial accounts, or work systems, check what it can do, whose permissions it uses, how it handles hostile content, and what stops an action from going through. A convincing demo or a prompt telling the agent to “be careful” does not establish that it is safe to authorize. Make the decision using the agent’s actual tools, connected-service permissions, identity, and execution boundaries—not the model’s promises.
This matters especially when an agent can send messages, move money, change account settings, access tax or identity documents, or act on information it reads. Use the checklist below in a sandbox or test account first. If you cannot determine the scope of access, how consequential actions are authorized, or how to revoke access, do not connect a sensitive account.

What you are evaluating—and why a demo is not enough
An AI agent is more than a language model: it can use tools to read information and take actions through connected services or its runtime. Its security therefore depends on several parts working together: model behavior, the tools exposed to it, the permissions behind those tools, the identity under which it acts, and the boundaries around its environment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA prompt such as “never send my data” is an instruction, not an access-control mechanism. It cannot by itself prevent an enabled tool from sending a message or changing a file. A dependable setup uses the connected service or a separate policy and execution layer to validate actions, and it limits what the agent is able to reach in the first place.

NIST’s Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) described agent hijacking in a January 17, 2025 article as a form of indirect prompt injection: malicious instructions placed in data an agent ingests can cause unintended, harmful actions. In the source’s words, “Currently, many AI agents are vulnerable to agent hijacking, a type of indirect prompt injection in which an attacker inserts malicious instructions into data that may be ingested by an AI agent, causing it to take unintended, harmful actions.” The source’s point is that the risky instruction may arrive inside an email, document, or webpage—not directly from you.
That is why a successful demonstration on clean, predictable inputs is weak evidence. You need to examine the permissions and controls, then test realistic untrusted content and observe the actual tool calls and outcomes. No single checklist score can guarantee safety.
Decide what the agent is allowed to do before connecting it
Write down the job and its boundaries
Describe the task in concrete terms. “Help with my finances” is too broad to assess; “read statements in this folder and categorize transactions without changing the files or contacting anyone” gives you a boundary to verify. List which data sources are needed and the exact actions the task requires.
Classify each possible action separately. Can the agent read, create, edit, delete, send, purchase, change settings, or run commands? A task may require read access without requiring write access, or the ability to draft a message without permission to send it. Keep those distinctions visible instead of treating a connector as either wholly safe or wholly unsafe.
Also identify what must remain outside scope: sensitive files, account recovery options, payment functions, administrator privileges, production systems, or any account unrelated to the task. For personal finance, consider whether the proposed connection could expose statements, tax records, identity documents, payment details, or the ability to initiate a transaction. The exact risks depend on what the connected service exposes.
Turn the task into a minimum-permission requirement
For every requested permission, ask what part of the task needs it. If you cannot name a necessary operation that depends on a permission, remove it or leave the integration disconnected. Prefer access limited to a specific account, folder, or data set over access to everything the user can see.
Separate reading from changing wherever the service allows it. A workflow that needs to inspect records should not silently inherit edit, delete, send, or broad database privileges. Likewise, a tool that can run arbitrary commands or fetch arbitrary URLs deserves closer scrutiny than a narrow operation with defined inputs and outputs.

- List the task, the data it needs, and each action it must perform.
- Mark high-impact capabilities, including sending, deleting, purchasing, changing permissions, and running commands.
- Identify personal, financial, recovery, administrative, and production resources that are not needed.
- Compare every enabled permission with the task; remove capabilities without a clear purpose.
Inspect the tools and the permissions behind them
Review every enabled connector, extension, function, and MCP server, not just the agent’s main settings page. A tool is an action pathway; the connected service’s permission determines what that pathway can do. Check both layers. A harmless-looking tool name does not establish that its backing identity is narrowly scoped.
Look at the actual authorization screen and the service’s connected-app settings. Determine whether the connector can read or write, which accounts and data it can reach, and whether its identity is privileged or shared. If a read-only task is paired with write access, find out whether the extra capability can be removed. Disable tools the task does not need.
For coding agents, OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI guidance recommends auditing connected MCP servers, keeping an allowlist, detecting changes to tool definitions, reviewing tool descriptions for concealed instructions, restricting tools, and validating arguments before execution. These checks matter because an integration can change, and an agent may receive instructions through tool metadata as well as through ordinary files or webpages.
Prefer narrow, typed operations enforced by the service or infrastructure over broad tools whose inputs can direct them almost anywhere. Where an arbitrary command, URL-fetch, or general-purpose database tool is available, ask whether the task can be completed without it. If it is necessary, the environment should tightly constrain what it can access and what it can affect. Verify tool arguments before execution as well: a tool that is appropriate in principle can still be pointed at an unintended file, account, or destination if its inputs are not checked.

Find out whether the agent acts as a distinct identity or effectively impersonates you. If the agent’s actions appear under your personal identity, it may be harder to distinguish its activity from yours, and its effective access may be as broad as your own. NIST’s identity guidance discusses this accountability problem, including the risks of local agents operating with a user’s credentials.
Inspect the authorization scopes shown by OAuth or an equivalent mechanism. Check whether they are read-only where appropriate, limited to the relevant account or resource, and time-limited or task-bound. NIST warns that sharing credentials creates accountability gaps; OWASP guidance also identifies broad, unscoped API keys as a risk. Avoid giving an agent your password, a broad long-lived key, or sensitive account-recovery information in a prompt when a scoped delegated authorization is available.
Before granting access, locate the revocation control. Know which connected-app settings page or administrative control can end the authorization, and whether revoking it affects only the agent or other applications too. If you cannot tell what credential is in use, what it permits, or how to disable it, do not proceed with sensitive access.

Test how it handles instructions hidden in content
Run tests before connecting the agent to sensitive accounts. Use a sandbox or test account with harmless data, and create realistic examples where an email, document, repository issue, or webpage contains instructions that conflict with your task. For example, a file being summarized could tell the agent to disclose private information elsewhere. The objective is to see whether untrusted content can redirect behavior into an action you did not authorize.

Observe tool calls and their outcomes, not only the agent’s explanation afterward. Record whether it stayed within the user’s task, attempted an external action, and whether a control blocked or allowed that action. A reassuring written response does not tell you what the execution layer actually did.
Use multiple scenarios and repeat trials. NIST CAISI’s evaluation guidance emphasizes adaptive, task-specific evaluation; its examples include simulated Workspace, Travel, Slack, and Banking environments. Repeated attempts provide more useful evidence than a single pass, but passing a finite set of tests still does not prove that the system cannot be redirected by other content. For a meaningful test, match the scenario to the job: an agent that reads email should be tested with email-like content, while one that handles repository issues should be tested with issue-like content. Consider both an attempted disclosure and a request to take an action that the user did not authorize.
- Choose a task that reflects the real workflow, but use test data and a non-sensitive account.
- Add an untrusted instruction to a representative source the agent will read, such as a document or message.
- Include a conflicting request or an attempt to cause disclosure or an unapproved action.
- Inspect the agent’s actual tool calls, the resulting state, and any controls that intervened.
- Repeat with different wording and sources; revise the test when the agent, tools, or permissions change.
This is an operational way to apply evaluation guidance, not a standardized consumer certification or a guarantee of safety. A changing agent, connector, or service can behave differently from the configuration you tested.
Put independent controls in front of consequential actions
For a consequential action, authorization should be checked by the service or a separate policy and execution component—not left to the model’s willingness to obey an instruction. The check should validate who is acting, the target, the parameters, the permitted scope, and whether any required approval has been given.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Require explicit human review before high-impact actions such as sending a message, deleting a file, changing privileges, moving money, or making another material account change. Where supported, tie approval to the exact action and target, and use short-lived authorization. The control should fail closed if the required authorization or audit check is unavailable.
An approval button alone is not enough if the action can change after approval or if the backend does not enforce the decision. Confirm that the person is approving the actual operation that will execute, and that the service will reject an action outside the approved scope. For workflows that only need to prepare a transaction or message, consider keeping the final submission step with the user.

Contain an agent that runs on your computer
A locally running agent may have access to more than the folder you intended to share. Determine whether its process can see other local files, environment variables, browser sessions, SSH keys, cloud credentials, or arbitrary command execution. A personal or work computer can hold credentials and sessions that were never part of the task.
OWASP recommends using sandboxed environments such as restricted shells, virtual machines, development containers, or ephemeral workspaces, and limiting outbound network access and credentials to the task. NIST also notes that local deployment with a user’s credentials can enable impersonation and broad access; a sandbox or hardened harness can limit what the agent reaches.
Check the actual boundary rather than relying on the word “sandbox.” Verify which directories are mounted, whether the agent can reach the host system, which network destinations are allowed, and where credentials are stored. If the task needs a file, provide only that file or a narrow working directory where practical. If it needs network access, restrict egress to destinations needed for the job rather than assuming that a local process cannot transmit data.
Monitor the connection and plan for revocation
Before granting access, find out where actions are logged, who can review them, and what alerts are available. Logs should let you inspect actual tool calls and identify which identity performed them. Rate limits and alerts can reduce the time or scale of unwanted activity, but they do not replace prevention, least privilege, or authorization checks.
Know how to disable the integration quickly, and decide who is responsible for doing so. Review the connection after a new tool is added, an integration changes, permissions expand, or the task itself changes. Repeat relevant tests after those changes; a prior evaluation applies only to the configuration and scenarios you examined.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare agents by verifiable controls, not security claims
When comparing two agents, ask for evidence about the controls available in the configuration you would actually use. The official NIST and OWASP sources discussed here provide control criteria, not a current consumer-agent ranking or an independent product certification.
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Permission granularity | Whether reading and writing can be separated, and access limited to specific data, accounts, or actions. |
| Tool control | Whether unnecessary tools can be removed, and whether broad command or URL-fetch capabilities can be restricted. |
| Identity and credentials | Whether the agent has a distinct delegated identity, appropriately scoped and time-limited credentials, secure storage, and a clear revocation path. |
| Action authorization | Whether the connected service or policy layer checks each action and its parameters, rather than relying only on model instructions. |
| Approval for high-impact actions | Whether approval is meaningful, action-specific, and enforced at execution time. |
| Prompt-injection evaluation | Whether task-specific tests use untrusted content and are repeated, with observable tool calls and outcomes. |
| Audit and response | Whether logs, alerts, rate limits, and a practical way to inspect activity are available. |
| Runtime containment | Whether filesystem, network, command, and secret access are limited to the task. |
| Integration governance | Whether tools can be allowlisted, tool-definition changes detected, and arguments validated before execution. |
Do not treat a vendor’s general description of a model as a substitute for checking the specific scopes, connected tools, and execution controls you will enable. Likewise, do not convert a checklist into a pass/fail score that implies a guarantee. The practical question is whether the configuration can perform the task while being unable to perform unnecessary or unapproved actions. The reviewed official guidance does not provide a current product ranking or a consumer-agent certification, so a claim that an agent is “secure” is not a substitute for verifying its actual configuration.

Make the go/no-go decision
Connect an agent only when you can explain its job, confirm the minimum access needed, identify the identity and credential in use, and locate the mechanism that enforces authorization and revokes access. Test hostile or conflicting content in a safe environment, and make sure you can inspect what the tools actually did.
- Go cautiously: the task is narrow, permissions match it, consequential actions have independent controls, test results are observable, and you know how to revoke access.
- Pause and reduce scope: the task is legitimate but the connection includes unnecessary write, send, command, account, or data access that can be removed.
- No-go for sensitive access: you cannot identify the permissions or credential, the agent can make consequential changes without enforced authorization, or there is no clear way to inspect and revoke access.
NIST SP 800-171 Revision 3 is an organizational security standard for protecting controlled unclassified information in nonfederal systems; it may provide general access-control context, but it is not a consumer-agent certification or a direct pass/fail test for a particular agent. The guidance reviewed for this article also does not establish a suitable headline statistic for how often agents are vulnerable, so avoid treating an unsupported percentage as evidence for or against a particular product.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to give an AI agent read-only access?
Read-only access can reduce the consequences of mistakes, but it is not automatically safe. The agent may still expose information it can read, and it may have other tools or permissions beyond the connector you are considering. Check the actual scopes, data sources, identity, and tool set; use the narrowest access needed and test how it handles untrusted content.
Can a prompt prevent an agent from sending or changing something?
A prompt is an instruction, not an authorization control. For consequential actions, the connected service or a separate policy and execution component should validate the actor, target, parameters, scope, and approval state. Keep final submission with a person when the workflow does not need the agent to perform it.
How should I test an agent for prompt injection?
Use a sandbox or test account with harmless data. Put conflicting or malicious instructions in representative content the agent will read, such as an email, document, repository issue, or webpage. Inspect actual tool calls and outcomes, not only the agent’s explanation, and repeat tests with different scenarios. This is useful evaluation, not a guarantee or standardized consumer certification.
What should I check before connecting an account?
Check which tools are enabled, what permissions they have behind the scenes, whether the agent uses a distinct identity, how credentials are scoped and revoked, whether high-impact actions have enforced approval, and where logs are available. If you cannot identify the access or disable it, do not connect a sensitive account.
Is there an official ranking or certification that tells me which AI agent is safest?
The NIST and OWASP guidance discussed here supplies control criteria, not a current consumer-agent ranking or independent product certification. Compare verifiable settings and safeguards in the specific configuration you would use rather than relying on a generic security label or checklist score.
