To evaluate a freight broker stock, look past the top line: understand how the company records revenue, measure gross profit and margins, test operating costs and cash generation, then examine debt and the ability to withstand a freight downturn. Growth in reported revenue is not, by itself, evidence of stronger unit economics or a more valuable business.
Why freight-broker revenue needs special care
The broker keeps a spread, not the full customer charge
A freight broker typically arranges transportation between a shipper that needs goods moved and an independent carrier that transports them. The broker charges the customer and pays the carrier. The difference between those amounts is a core source of the broker’s gross profit; the carrier payment is a substantial cost of delivering the service, not money the broker retains.

For a simple illustration, suppose a broker bills a shipper $100 for a shipment and pays a carrier $85. Before its other expenses, the broker has $15 of gross profit. The $100 billing is not equivalent to $100 of economic value retained by the broker. The $15 spread must still help cover employee compensation, technology, sales, administration, interest, taxes, and other costs.

Revenue presentation can make two logistics companies look less comparable than they are. C.H. Robinson’s 2025 filing says that most transportation and sourcing transactions are recorded at the gross amount charged, while specified services are recorded net. In gross presentation, the reported figure includes the customer charge even though much of it is paid to transportation providers. In net presentation, reported revenue may reflect a narrower amount after certain costs are deducted.

Before comparing reported revenue, read each company’s revenue-recognition policy and segment descriptions. Establish which activities are reported gross, which are reported net, and what transportation, sourcing, forwarding, or other services sit inside the consolidated total. Then compare gross profit as well as revenue. A comparison based only on revenue can mistake accounting presentation, business mix, or purchased transportation for a difference in the scale of economics the broker actually retains.
Revenue can rise without a better spread
Revenue may change because shipment volumes, freight prices, service mix, customer charges, or carrier costs change. It may also increase when a company buys another business. A larger revenue number does not identify which of those things happened, or whether the broker earned more per shipment. Treat growth as a question to investigate: what drove it, what happened to gross profit, and did operating income and cash generation follow?
How to measure gross profit and margins
Start with dollars retained after transportation costs
Gross profit is the first useful bridge between reported revenue and the broker’s own economics. Look for the issuer’s stated gross profit measure and determine which costs it deducts. Some companies also report an adjusted gross profit measure. Use that only as a supplement: read the company’s definition, identify the adjustments, and reconcile it to the corresponding GAAP measure rather than assuming that different issuers define it the same way.

Gross margin = gross profit ÷ the stated revenue denominator
The denominator matters. If a company reports both gross margin on reported revenue and a margin based on net revenue or another adjusted denominator, keep those measures distinct. Do not compare percentages until you know what each one divides by and what costs each gross-profit figure includes.

Read the spread alongside the percentage
A percentage margin describes how much gross profit is produced per dollar of the chosen revenue measure; gross-profit dollars show the total amount available to pay operating costs. Track both. A margin can decline while gross-profit dollars rise if the business expands enough, or the reverse can occur. Neither outcome is self-explanatory: inspect shipment activity, pricing, costs, and mix before deciding whether performance improved.
Where disclosed, add gross profit per load, shipment, or mile. Per-unit measures can help distinguish a change in volume from a change in the economics of each movement. Check the issuer’s definition and reporting period, and use like-for-like units when comparing periods or companies. If the company does not disclose a useful per-unit measure, do not infer one from consolidated revenue alone.
Use segment results where the company provides them
Consolidated margins can blur material differences between businesses. In its fourth-quarter 2025 results, RXO reported a 14.8% company gross margin and an 11.9% brokerage gross margin. Those are different measures for different scopes; the consolidated figure should not be treated as the brokerage margin. A diversified logistics company may also include forwarding or other activities that do not have the same economics as North American truck brokerage.
For each issuer, identify the segments relevant to brokerage and note whether their gross-profit and margin definitions match the consolidated measures. If segment mix shifts, the consolidated margin may move even if the economics of an individual service line do not. Compare segment results only when the disclosed definitions and periods make the comparison meaningful.
What freight-market changes can do to margins
Carrier costs and customer rates do not always reset together
Brokerage margins are exposed to the timing of repricing. When carrier capacity tightens, a broker may have to pay higher buy rates to secure trucks before contractual customer sell rates can be renegotiated. If carrier costs rise faster than the rates charged to customers, the spread narrows. Conversely, when capacity and rates change in the other direction, margin behavior can differ. The direction and timing depend on conditions, contracts, and the mix of shipments; there is no single margin level that establishes whether a broker is performing well in every market.

RXO reported transportation and services costs equal to 80.3% of revenue in FY2025, compared with 78.4% in FY2024. RXO attributed part of the increase in its truck-brokerage component to buy rates rising faster than contractual sell rates as the market tightened. These are RXO-reported figures and management’s explanation of its own results, not an industry benchmark or independent measure of every broker’s experience.
Judge performance across more than one freight environment
A single quarter can capture a temporary mismatch between carrier prices and customer contracts. When reviewing a company’s history, look at gross profit, margin, operating income, and shipment-level measures across periods with different demand and capacity conditions. Ask whether the company preserved its spread, adjusted costs, and generated cash as the cycle changed. A strong period alone cannot show how the business will respond when customer demand weakens or capacity tightens.
RXO Chairman and CEO Drew Wilkerson said in the company’s February 6, 2026, fourth-quarter results release: “In the fourth quarter, tightening in the freight market accelerated, driven by continued reductions in truckload capacity. This impacted our buy rates and squeezed our Brokerage gross margin.” This is management’s account of the quarter. Use it to understand how RXO explained its results, not as independent proof of the condition of the entire freight market.
How to separate organic growth from acquisitions and mix
Rebuild the growth story behind the headline
For each reported growth rate, find the company’s explanation of the drivers. Separate changes attributable to existing operations from acquisitions, divestitures, foreign exchange, and service mix where the issuer reports them. If the company acquired a business, a year that includes a full period of that business can show a large reported increase even when the underlying business did not grow at that rate organically.
RXO reported FY2025 revenue growth of 26.2%, to $5.7 billion. The company attributed the increase primarily to a $1.2 billion rise in truck-brokerage revenue associated with a full year of Coyote and a $141 million increase in last-mile revenue. The headline growth therefore should not be read as an organic growth rate. Assess the acquired operation’s contribution separately from performance in the pre-existing business, using the company’s own disclosures about the comparison where available.

Do not treat consolidated totals as pure brokerage results
C.H. Robinson reported $16.2 billion in consolidated revenue for 2025. Its consolidated business includes global forwarding and other activities in addition to North American truck brokerage. That total is useful for understanding the scale of the company as reported, but it should not be treated as a direct measure of truck-brokerage revenue or compared mechanically with a company whose mix is different.
A disciplined comparison therefore identifies the relevant segment first, then asks how much reported growth came from volume, pricing, acquisitions, or mix. If the available disclosures do not permit a clean split, state that limitation rather than labeling the full reported increase organic.
How to test operating cost control and cash generation
See whether gross profit covers the operating base
After gross profit, assess operating expenses relative to gross profit and compare the result with reported operating income. Review the costs the company discloses, such as compensation, technology, sales, and administration, without assuming that every issuer classifies identical costs in the same line. A broker can handle a large revenue base and still produce weak operating profit if its retained spread is thin or its operating costs are too high for the gross profit it generates.
Look for changes in operating costs and operating income alongside changes in gross profit. If gross profit rises but operating income does not, investigate whether costs grew, whether mix shifted, or whether acquisition-related or other expenses affected the period. If management presents an adjusted operating measure, check its definition and reconciliation; do not silently substitute it for GAAP operating income.

Accounting earnings do not show the timing of every cash receipt and payment. Read the cash-flow statement and consider whether operations have generated cash consistently enough to fund working-capital needs, interest, principal repayments, investment in technology, and shareholder returns. Freight brokers’ cash needs can be affected by the timing of collections from customers and payments to carriers, so a profit figure alone does not establish how much cash is available for debt service.

Compare cash from operations with reported earnings over multiple periods and investigate large differences. Review whether working capital, one-off items, acquisition-related costs, or other changes explain them. The key question is not simply whether a company reported positive earnings, but whether recurring operating cash generation appears capable of supporting its obligations through a weaker freight market.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to evaluate debt, interest, and liquidity
Pair the debt balance with cash flow and maturities
A debt balance is a starting point, not a conclusion about risk. Review total debt and net debt alongside cash, operating cash flow, interest expense, required repayments, and the maturity schedule. Check the debt note for the timing and terms of obligations, and examine any covenants and committed credit facilities. Consider whether the company could cover interest and scheduled principal payments if gross profit and cash generation fell during a downturn.
Also account for the cash demands around acquisitions: financing can increase debt, while integration may involve additional costs. Consider the full set of demands on cash, including essential investment and shareholder distributions, instead of assuming that cash available in a strong period will remain available under stress.

Distinguish committed liquidity from debt capacity
A revolving facility can provide access to liquidity subject to its terms, but its existence does not by itself demonstrate that a borrower can safely carry more debt or that all reported borrowing capacity is freely available. Read the facility details and balance them against obligations, restrictions, and expected cash needs.
RXO’s fourth-quarter 2025 release says the company finalized a $450 million asset-based revolving credit facility in Q1 2026. That is a specific facility and date, not a complete assessment of RXO’s leverage, available borrowing capacity, or debt maturities. The figures available here do not establish a current, peer-comparable leverage ratio or a full maturity schedule. A stock-specific debt judgment requires each company’s latest balance sheet, debt note, and cash-flow statement.
A practical sequence for evaluating a freight broker
- Map the business. Identify the brokerage segments and other services included in consolidated results. Note whether the company operates forwarding, last-mile, or other activities that could affect totals.
- Read revenue-recognition policies. Determine which transactions are recorded gross and which are recorded net. Do not compare revenue totals until the presentation and business mix are understood.
- Calculate gross profit and margin consistently. Use the issuer’s stated definitions, keep reported and adjusted figures distinct, and record the denominator used for each margin.
- Inspect unit economics and operating costs. Where available, track gross profit per shipment, load, or mile. Compare operating expenses and operating income with gross profit.
- Attribute growth. Separate reported growth from acquisition, divestiture, foreign-exchange, volume, rate, and mix effects when the company discloses them.
- Trace results to cash. Examine operating cash flow and working-capital movements, then consider investment needs, interest, repayments, and shareholder returns.
- Review debt terms and resilience. Check cash, maturities, covenants, and committed liquidity, and ask whether normalized cash generation could service obligations in weaker conditions.
- Compare like with like. Use the same periods, segments, revenue presentation, margin denominator, and GAAP or issuer-defined adjusted measures across companies.
What the cited company figures do—and do not—show
| Company and period | Reported figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| C.H. Robinson, 2025 | $16.2 billion consolidated revenue | Includes global forwarding and other activities as well as North American truck brokerage; not a pure brokerage revenue figure. |
| RXO, FY2025 | Revenue grew 26.2% to $5.7 billion | RXO attributed the increase primarily to a full year of Coyote-related truck-brokerage revenue and higher last-mile revenue; it is not an organic growth rate. |
| RXO, FY2025 versus FY2024 | Transportation and services costs were 80.3% versus 78.4% of revenue | RXO linked part of the truck-brokerage increase to buy rates rising faster than contractual sell rates as the market tightened. |
| RXO, fourth quarter 2025 | 14.8% company gross margin; 11.9% brokerage gross margin | Different scopes; the company margin should not be substituted for the brokerage segment margin. |
| RXO, Q1 2026 | $450 million asset-based revolving credit facility finalized | A facility figure alone does not provide a full maturity schedule or peer-comparable leverage assessment. |
These are company-reported figures for the stated periods, not industry-wide benchmarks. They illustrate why an investor should identify scope, accounting presentation, and growth drivers before drawing conclusions. They do not establish which stock is attractively valued: that judgment also requires current market capitalization or enterprise value and a full review of each company’s current financial statements.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling all reported revenue money retained. Much of a broker’s transportation revenue can be paid onward to carriers.
- Using revenue growth as a profitability proxy. Growth can reflect price, volume, mix, acquisitions, or pass-through costs while margins or operating profit weaken.
- Comparing margin percentages without definitions. Confirm the business scope, gross-versus-net accounting, numerator, and denominator first.
- Treating adjusted measures as interchangeable. Issuer-defined adjustments can differ; read the reconciliation before comparing them.
- Projecting one market quarter indefinitely. Capacity, buy rates, contractual sell rates, and demand can change at different speeds.
- Declaring debt safe from the balance alone. Cash, interest, scheduled maturities, covenants, liquidity, and downturn cash generation all matter.
How to reach a stock-specific conclusion
This framework evaluates the business, not whether a particular share price is attractive. A complete investment analysis would pair the operating assessment with current valuation, including market capitalization or enterprise value, and current financial statements that establish debt, cash, interest expense, maturities, and cash flow. Then test whether the market price reflects the company’s retained economics and its ability to sustain them through changing freight conditions. Without those current inputs, the responsible conclusion is limited to the operating framework—not a buy or sell call.
