Start with your personalized retirement estimate in a my Social Security account. Check the earnings record it uses, then compare the projected monthly amounts at 62, your full retirement age (FRA), and 70 using a realistic assumption for future earnings. Claiming before FRA permanently reduces the monthly benefit calculation; a separate earnings test may temporarily withhold payments if you work while collecting benefits before FRA.

Get a personalized estimate using your Social Security earnings record

The most useful starting point is the Social Security Administration’s (SSA’s) Retirement Estimate in my Social Security. It uses your earnings record to estimate benefits at different claiming ages and lets you enter expected future earnings. Because the estimate depends on that record, review it before relying on the dollar amounts.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Open your account and find the Retirement Estimate. Use the estimate based on your own SSA earnings record rather than starting with a national average or a generic example.
  2. Review the earnings history. Check that the years and earnings shown match your work history. If information appears incomplete or incorrect, address the record with SSA; an estimate built on incorrect information may not reflect the benefit you ultimately qualify for.
  3. Enter a realistic future-earnings assumption. The estimate can account for expected earnings. Use a plausible amount and duration of future work, not an optimistic figure chosen to produce a larger projection.
  4. Compare the same assumptions at 62, FRA, and 70. This isolates the effect of claim age. If the tool offers other starting ages, you can consider those too, but keep the earnings assumption consistent when comparing.
  5. Save the figures and note what each represents. These are projected monthly retirement amounts based on your record and assumptions—not a guarantee of future payments or a personalized recommendation about when to claim.

SSA provides other calculators if you cannot use the account estimate or need a different calculation. They differ in how much personal earnings information they use, so a quick result should not be mistaken for an estimate based on a verified record.

SSA tool What it uses or does When it is useful
Retirement Estimate in my Social Security Your SSA earnings record; lets you compare claim ages and enter expected future earnings. Best initial option when you can access your own record.
Online Calculator Requires your covered earnings record by year. SSA describes it as more accurate than the Quick Calculator. Useful when you want a calculator-based estimate and can provide the earnings history it requires.
Quick Calculator Uses current earnings and basic personal inputs, not your official earnings record. Useful for a rough estimate when you do not have the detailed record available.
Detailed Calculator A downloadable desktop program with broader computation capability. Useful when you need more detailed calculations than the quick estimate provides.
Retirement Earnings Test Calculator Estimates the effect of current-year work earnings while receiving benefits below FRA. Useful for a separate question: whether earnings may cause some current payments to be withheld.

The earnings record is not a minor detail. SSA says a retirement benefit is based on a worker’s highest 35 years of earnings and the age benefits start. The account estimate brings those two factors together; the other calculators may require you to supply more of the earnings information yourself.

Understand how earnings history affects the starting benefit

Social Security retirement benefits are based on covered earnings—earnings counted under Social Security—rather than simply your last salary or your best-paid year. SSA adjusts earnings under its benefit formula and uses the highest 35 years in the calculation. The formula turns that earnings history into a primary insurance amount, which is the worker’s benefit at full retirement age before any age-based adjustment for claiming early or late.

Why the highest 35 years matter

If you have at least 35 years of covered earnings, lower-earning years can still be part of the 35-year calculation if they are among your highest years. Years with no earnings are not skipped: if you have fewer than 35 years, the missing years count as zeros. That can lower the calculation compared with a record containing 35 years of earnings.

More work can sometimes improve the earnings basis. If an additional year’s earnings are higher than one of the lower years already counted, the new year may replace that lower year in the highest-35 calculation. The effect depends on the record: another year of work does not automatically produce a particular dollar increase, and an estimate should use your actual earnings pattern rather than assume every extra year raises the benefit by the same amount.

How the 2026 taxable maximum fits in

For 2026, SSA’s Social Security taxable maximum is $184,500. Earnings above that annual maximum do not increase the worker’s Social Security benefit for that year. This is a cap on the earnings counted for benefit purposes, not a cap on what someone may earn or on the amount of benefit they can receive. The maximum can change from year to year, so treat $184,500 as a 2026 figure rather than a permanent threshold.

SSA also announced a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2026, based on the change in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers from the third quarter of 2024 through the third quarter of 2025. A COLA is different from the age-based claiming adjustment: the COLA is an annual adjustment to benefits, while claiming age affects the monthly retirement amount calculated for you. The 2.8% figure is the 2026 adjustment, not a forecast of future annual increases.

Compare claiming at 62, full retirement age, and 70

You may start retirement benefits as early as 62. Your FRA depends on your birth year; for people born in 1960 or later, FRA is 67. Claiming before FRA reduces the monthly retirement amount based on how many months early you start. That age-based reduction is permanent. Delaying past FRA earns delayed retirement credits through age 70; there is no additional delayed-credit increase after 70.

Use the personalized estimate to compare actual projected amounts. A simple age comparison helps show the direction of the trade-off, but it cannot by itself determine which age is best for a particular person. Monthly benefit size is only one part of a decision that may also involve household needs, health, other income, taxes, and planning for a spouse or survivors.

Claiming age or timing What happens to the monthly retirement amount What to check in your estimate
62 Benefits can begin as early as this age. Starting before FRA means a permanent age-based reduction; the exact reduction depends on birth year and how many months early you claim. Compare the age-62 estimate with the amount at your FRA, using the same earnings assumptions.
Full retirement age The worker’s primary insurance amount is payable at FRA, before any other applicable adjustments. FRA depends on birth year. Confirm the FRA listed for your birth year and compare the estimate at that age.
After FRA through age 70 Delayed retirement credits increase the monthly amount through age 70. No additional delayed-credit increase applies after 70. Compare the estimate at 70 with the FRA amount, and weigh the larger monthly amount against the time benefits were not claimed.

What SSA’s $1,000 example shows—and does not show

For a worker born in 1960 or later, SSA illustrates the age-based adjustment with a $1,000 full-retirement-age amount: claiming at 62 produces $700, a 30% reduction. This is an illustration, not a prediction for every worker. The reduction at 62 varies with birth year, and your own benefit depends on your covered earnings history as well as your claiming age.

SSA also illustrates a spouse amount of $500 at FRA becoming $325 at 62. That, too, is an agency example rather than a personal estimate. Do not apply either example to a different birth year, earnings record, or family situation as if it were a universal percentage or dollar amount.

Keep the monthly estimate in perspective

SSA reported an estimated average monthly benefit of $2,071 for all retired workers in January 2026. That is an average across retired workers, not a target, minimum, or forecast for a particular person. SSA’s published maximum monthly benefit for a worker retiring at FRA in 2026 is $4,152; it is a maximum, not a typical estimate. Your own account projection is more relevant than either national figure because it reflects your record and assumed future earnings.

The available monthly comparisons do not establish a universal best claiming age or a personalized break-even age. A larger monthly amount after waiting does not alone answer whether waiting is preferable for you; compare the projected amounts with your circumstances and, where necessary, seek guidance on questions the basic estimate does not resolve.

Separate a permanent early-claim reduction from the retirement earnings test

These are two different mechanisms. Claiming before FRA permanently changes the monthly benefit calculation. The retirement earnings test, by contrast, can cause SSA to withhold some benefit payments when you work and receive benefits before FRA. Withholding under the test is not the same as the permanent age-based reduction, and it does not mean wages or investment income are being used to recalculate the early-claim percentage.

The earnings test counts wages and net self-employment earnings. It does not count pensions or investment income. The applicable annual limit depends on whether you are under FRA for the whole year or reach FRA during the year.

Situation in 2026 Earnings limit Withholding rule
Under FRA throughout 2026 $24,480 for the year SSA withholds $1 in benefits for every $2 of counted earnings above the limit.
Reach FRA during 2026 $65,160, counting only earnings before the FRA month SSA withholds $1 in benefits for every $3 of counted earnings above the limit.
From the month you reach FRA No earnings-test limit applies from that month onward. Earnings do not reduce benefits under this test from the FRA month.

These thresholds are specifically for 2026, not standing limits for later years. The year-of-FRA rule concerns earnings before the month you reach FRA; it is not the same as applying the under-FRA-all-year limit to every month of that year. Use SSA’s Retirement Earnings Test Calculator for a current-year estimate if you are collecting benefits and expect wages or net self-employment earnings.

What withholding means for later benefits

If SSA withholds benefits because earnings exceed the applicable limit, it recalculates the benefit after you reach FRA to account for months in which benefits were withheld. That adjustment is distinct from the original early-claim reduction. Separately, additional work can raise the benefit if later earnings improve the highest-35-year record. Neither possibility means earnings-test withholding is refunded in a simple dollar-for-dollar way; use SSA’s calculator and account information for your circumstances rather than treating the annual limit as a personal payment forecast.

Working, stopping work, and claiming are separate choices

You do not have to stop working to claim retirement benefits, and stopping work does not require you to claim immediately. These choices affect different parts of the picture: additional covered earnings may change the record used for the benefit, the age you claim changes the monthly amount, and wages while collecting before FRA may trigger earnings-test withholding. Consider them separately in the estimate rather than assuming that retiring from a job and starting benefits are a single decision.

Use the estimate as a comparison, not a complete financial plan

A good estimate answers a specific question: what monthly retirement amount does SSA project for my earnings record, at each available starting age, under my assumptions about future earnings? It does not settle every issue that can affect household income or the consequences of claiming. In particular, a basic worker estimate should not be treated as a complete analysis of family benefits, taxation of benefits, Medicare costs, or individual treatment of noncovered employment.

If one of those issues may materially change your decision, identify the question separately and check the relevant SSA guidance or an appropriate official tool. Do not infer a spouse’s or survivor’s benefit, a tax result, a Medicare premium, or the treatment of noncovered work from the worker-only age examples above.

A practical comparison checklist

  • Check that the earnings history shown by SSA reflects your work record.
  • Use a realistic assumption for future earnings and keep it consistent across claim-age comparisons.
  • Record the projected monthly benefit at 62, your FRA, and 70; confirm FRA from your birth year.
  • Keep the permanent age-based reduction separate from any earnings-test withholding.
  • If you will work while receiving benefits before FRA, distinguish wages and net self-employment income from pension or investment income, and use the 2026 limit only for 2026.
  • Consider whether spouse or survivor benefits, taxes, Medicare costs, or noncovered employment require a separate official answer.

SSA’s annual dollar thresholds and other published amounts can change. The figures in this article are labeled for 2026; recheck the current SSA information before using them for a later year.
