It uses your recorded earnings to show estimated retirement benefits at different claiming ages, including 62, your full retirement age, and 70. Before relying on the result, check that your earnings record is accurate and note the assumptions behind the estimate—especially any future income you expect to earn.
Get your personalized estimate first
The SSA’s Retirement Estimate in a personal my Social Security account is the best starting point for most people. It uses the earnings recorded on your Social Security record rather than asking you to reconstruct your work history, and it lets you compare estimates for different claiming ages. The SSA says you can also include expected future income, which matters if you plan to keep working. The agency describes the personal account as the best way to plan using personalized retirement estimates.

The estimate is a projection, not a promise of a particular future payment. It depends on the earnings SSA has recorded, the age you select, and assumptions such as future earnings. The SSA notes that estimates can change as your record, assumptions, or calculator updates change. Save the date and assumptions with any figures you compare so you know what each estimate represents.

If you find a discrepancy, follow the SSA’s instructions for correcting an earnings record before treating the estimate as dependable. Do not assume that an estimate is accurate merely because it came from the official calculator: the tool can only reflect the information available to it.
Run a useful comparison
- Open the Retirement Estimate in your personal my Social Security account.
- Review the estimate for age 62, your full retirement age, and age 70. If your full retirement age is not one of those displayed options, compare the age-specific estimate that applies to you.
- If you expect to continue working, enter or adjust the future-income assumption where the estimator allows it. Use a realistic assumption rather than treating an uncertain salary as guaranteed.
- Record the estimate date, the claiming age, the future-earnings assumption, and whether each amount is shown in today’s or future dollars.
- Return to the estimate after a meaningful earnings-record correction or a change in your work plans. The result can change when its inputs change.
Keep the comparison focused on monthly benefit estimates at the ages you are considering. Do not treat the largest displayed monthly amount as an automatic answer to when you should claim: the calculator does not decide how your health, cash-flow needs, work plans, household benefits, or taxes should affect that choice.
How much might I get at 62, full retirement age, or 70?
There is no single dollar amount that applies to everyone. The personalized estimate is based on your earnings record, and the same person’s estimated monthly benefit can differ depending on the claiming age entered. The most useful first answer to “How much will I get?” is therefore the set of age-specific amounts shown for your own record, not an average or a generic online example.
For a fair comparison, make sure you are comparing the same earnings record and future-income assumption across ages. If the tool shows amounts in different dollar terms, note whether they are in today’s or future dollars; a future-dollar figure is not directly equivalent to a today’s-dollar figure. The estimates help show the effect of timing on the monthly amount, but they do not calculate which timing is best for your circumstances.
Choose another SSA calculator only if it fits your situation
If you cannot use the personalized Retirement Estimate, the SSA offers other calculators. Their results are not interchangeable: the more a calculator relies on your actual covered earnings history, the less it has to infer from limited information.
| Tool | Earnings information | Best suited for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| my Social Security Retirement Estimate | Uses your personal SSA earnings record; can model expected future income. | Personalized estimates and comparisons among claiming ages. | Requires account access and an earnings record that is accurate. (SSA, “Get a benefits estimate.”) |
| Online Calculator | You enter covered earnings year by year. | A more tailored estimate when you can provide your earnings history but do not use the personalized tool. | Requires a complete earnings history. The SSA says entered information is stored temporarily on the local computer while the browser is open; close the browser after using it. (SSA, Online Calculator page, updated August 2026.) |
| Quick Calculator | You provide information such as age and current earnings; it estimates past earnings from your inputs. | A quick, rough starting point when you do not have a full earnings history ready. | It does not access your earnings record and may be unreliable with a limited work history or non-covered employment. (SSA, Quick Calculator guidance.) |
| Detailed Calculator | Offers inputs and options for detailed computations. | Complex or specialized estimates that call for more detailed modeling. | It is downloadable software with more features than most routine retirement estimates require. The SSA page reported version 2026.2, released July 13, 2026. |
When the Online Calculator is the better fallback
Use the Online Calculator if you can provide your covered earnings year by year and want a more tailored estimate than the Quick Calculator can give. Gather the earnings figures first; entering incomplete or approximate history can undermine the result. The SSA describes this calculator as more accurate than the Quick Calculator, but it still depends on the information you enter.

What the Quick Calculator can and cannot tell you
The Quick Calculator estimates past earnings from the information you supply rather than retrieving your SSA record. That makes it convenient when you want an initial approximation, but it is a weaker choice for a decision that depends on a close estimate. The SSA warns that non-covered employment can lead to an overestimate. If the result seems surprisingly high or your work history includes employment that did not pay into Social Security, check a more suitable calculator or seek SSA guidance before drawing conclusions.
In practical terms, use the Quick Calculator to get oriented, not to replace an earnings-history review. If its estimate is substantially different from a record-based estimate, first check what each tool assumed and whether all relevant covered earnings were included. The Quick Calculator’s convenience comes from estimating past earnings; that same feature is why its result can be less tailored to your circumstances.
When a detailed or special-purpose estimate may be needed
The SSA identifies additional calculator options for some special situations. If you have a pension from work not covered by Social Security, or a complicated spouse or survivor-benefit situation, a routine retirement estimate may not answer the question you actually have. Consult the relevant SSA calculator or benefit guidance rather than assuming that the basic age comparison captures the effects of your circumstances.
The Detailed Calculator is downloadable software with additional inputs and options for detailed computations. That added complexity may be useful for a specialized question, but most people seeking a routine comparison of retirement estimates can begin with the personal Retirement Estimate or the Online Calculator. The SSA’s Detailed Calculator page lists version 2026.2, released July 13, 2026; software versions and calculator instructions can change.

Understand why the estimate changes with claiming age
Retirement benefits can begin as early as age 62. Claiming before your full retirement age reduces the benefit for the months you claim early. Delaying after full retirement age can earn delayed retirement credits, up to age 70. The SSA says there is no additional delayed-credit increase for waiting beyond age 70.

For people born in 1960 or later, the SSA sets full retirement age at 67. Its general age guidance says claiming at 62 can reduce benefits by as much as 30% compared with claiming at full retirement age. That is a maximum for the specified comparison, not a universal reduction: the amount depends on your full retirement age and the number of months you claim early. People born before 1960 should check the SSA’s age guidance for their own full retirement age rather than assuming it is 67.
The SSA puts the early-start option plainly: “You can start receiving your Social Security retirement benefit as early as age 62.” For delaying, the agency says, “If you wait until age 70 to start your benefits, your benefit amount will be higher because you will receive delayed retirement credits for each month you delay filing for benefits.” These statements explain the direction of the trade-off, not what any particular person should do.
Use the calculator’s age-specific estimates to see how the monthly amount changes for your own earnings record. The point of the comparison is to understand the timing trade-off—not to infer that one age is best for everyone. The SSA’s estimate does not establish which choice is right for your personal finances.

Work earnings can affect estimates in two distinct ways. First, earnings recorded over your working life help determine the benefit estimate. The SSA states, “The more you earn and pay Social Security taxes (FICA), the higher your benefit payment.” For 2026, the SSA lists $184,500 as the taxable maximum for earnings counted toward benefit increases; earnings above that limit do not increase benefits for that year. The SSA also lists $1,890 in 2026 as the amount of earnings needed for one Social Security credit, with up to four credits earned in a year. Credits concern eligibility; they are not a measure of the size of a monthly retirement benefit.
Other income, such as pension or investment income, is not counted as work earnings for this benefit calculation. If you are entering future income in an estimator, distinguish earnings from work from other sources of income. Check the SSA’s current annual limits when using a calculator in a year other than 2026, because these figures can change.
The retirement earnings test is not the early-claiming reduction
If you claim retirement benefits and keep working before full retirement age, the retirement earnings test may affect benefits payable while you are below that age. It is separate from the permanent reduction associated with claiming before full retirement age. For 2026, the SSA lists an earnings-test limit of $24,480 for a person who is under full retirement age for the entire year. In the calendar year the person reaches full retirement age, the listed limit is $65,160, and it applies only to earnings before the month full retirement age is reached.

Do not use those earnings-test limits to adjust the basic claiming-age estimate yourself. The SSA says benefits withheld because of excess earnings are recalculated at full retirement age to account for months in which benefits were withheld. The rules concern the timing of benefits while working; they do not erase the distinction between claiming early and claiming at full retirement age.

Make your estimates comparable—and useful
A comparison is only meaningful when you can tell what went into each figure. Save a short record alongside the estimate rather than a monthly amount alone.
- Date: when you ran the estimate, since calculator updates and earnings records can change results.
- Claiming age: the age used for each amount, including your own full retirement age.
- Future earnings: the assumption you entered, or that no future earnings were included.
- Dollar basis: whether the estimate is displayed in today’s dollars or future dollars. Do not compare amounts on different bases as though they were equivalent.
- Tool and record status: whether the estimate used your personal SSA earnings record or earnings you entered yourself, and whether you had checked the history for errors.
If a later estimate differs, compare these inputs before concluding that your underlying benefit changed. A different claiming age, updated earnings record, revised future-income assumption, or calculator update can produce a different projection.
Common mistakes that lead to misleading estimates
- Relying on a record you have not checked. A personalized calculator uses SSA’s recorded earnings, so omissions or errors can flow through to the estimate.
- Treating a rough estimate like a personalized one. The Quick Calculator infers past earnings and does not access the record; it is not a substitute for a record-based estimate when precision matters.
- Assuming everyone’s full retirement age is 67. The SSA’s cited age of 67 applies to people born in 1960 or later.
- Reading the maximum early-claiming reduction as your personal reduction. The SSA’s “up to 30%” figure for claiming at 62 compared with full retirement age depends on birth year and claiming months.
- Mixing the earnings test with the age adjustment. The 2026 earnings-test limits apply to work earnings in specified periods; they are not the calculation of the reduction for claiming before full retirement age.
- Comparing amounts without noting their dollar basis. Record whether an estimate is stated in today’s or future dollars, along with the date and assumptions.
- Assuming a larger monthly estimate automatically means a better claiming decision. The calculator estimates benefits; it cannot weigh your personal health, household finances, work plans, or taxes for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a my Social Security account to estimate my retirement benefit?
No. The SSA also offers the Online Calculator, which uses earnings you enter, and the Quick Calculator, which estimates past earnings from your inputs. The personalized Retirement Estimate is the option that uses your SSA earnings record directly.
How much will I get if I claim at 62, full retirement age, or 70?
The amount depends on your recorded earnings and claiming age. Use the personalized Retirement Estimate to compare the monthly amounts for your own record, and note the future-income assumption and whether the estimates are in today’s or future dollars.
Does the $1,890 Social Security credit amount tell me how much my monthly benefit will be?
No. The SSA’s 2026 figure is the earnings amount for one credit, and workers can earn up to four credits in a year. Credits relate to eligibility; they do not indicate a monthly benefit amount.

Should I claim at 62, full retirement age, or 70?
The estimates can show how the monthly amount differs at those ages, but they cannot determine the right choice for you. That depends on personal factors such as income needs, health, work plans, household benefits, and taxes.
Does waiting past age 70 increase my retirement benefit?
No. The SSA says delayed retirement credits can increase the amount when you delay after full retirement age, but there is no additional delayed-credit increase after age 70.
What if I find an error in my Social Security earnings record?
Follow the SSA’s instructions for correcting the record, then rerun the estimate after the record is updated. Because the personalized estimate uses recorded earnings, an omission or error can affect the projection.
Can I use the Quick Calculator if I worked in a job not covered by Social Security?
Be cautious. The SSA warns that non-covered employment can cause the Quick Calculator to overestimate benefits. Use a relevant SSA calculator or guidance for your situation rather than treating a rough result as dependable.
The Bottom Line
For the most useful estimate, begin with your personal SSA earnings record, check it for errors, and compare the monthly projections at 62, your full retirement age, and 70 using a realistic future-earnings assumption. Treat every figure as a projection—not a guaranteed payment or a recommendation about when to claim.
