Estimate an AI-chatbot interaction by converting its electricity use to kilowatt-hours and multiplying by the carbon intensity of the electricity serving it: operational emissions (gCO₂e) = energy per interaction (Wh) ÷ 1,000 × grid intensity (gCO₂e/kWh). The arithmetic is simple; the difficult inputs are the model’s energy use, serving location, workload and measurement boundary. If those data are unavailable, report a scenario or range rather than a falsely precise personal footprint.
The calculation in one line
For one text, image, audio or video interaction, first estimate electricity in watt-hours (Wh). Divide by 1,000 to obtain kilowatt-hours (kWh), then multiply by the relevant electricity carbon-intensity factor in grams of carbon-dioxide equivalent per kilowatt-hour (gCO₂e/kWh).

The result covers operational electricity emissions unless you explicitly add another category. It does not automatically include manufacturing the servers, construction of data centers, water used for cooling, or the electricity used by your own device and network.
What the number can—and cannot—claim
A private chatbot session normally does not reveal the exact accelerator, utilization, data-center region, electricity contract or output-token count. Without those inputs, you cannot measure your individual prompt from a utility bill or from the text of the conversation alone. You can produce a transparent estimate by recording assumptions and presenting a range.
Keep these terms separate:
- Operational emissions: emissions associated with electricity used to serve the request, calculated with the formula above.
- Embodied emissions: emissions from manufacturing and deploying servers, accelerators, buildings and other equipment. Add them only when a method allocates those impacts to each interaction.
- Water consumption: cooling and related data-center water use. Water is an environmental measure, not a conversion of grams of CO₂e.
- Life-cycle footprint: an explicitly defined combination of operational, embodied and other stages. State every included stage rather than calling it simply “the carbon footprint.”
A dated production reference: Google’s Gemini Apps measurement
Google reported the following for the median Gemini Apps text-generation prompt using May 2025 data:
| Metric | Reported value | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | 0.24 Wh | Google’s 2025 provider-specific measurement for the median text prompt |
| Emissions | 0.03 gCO₂e | Uses Google’s 2024 average fleetwide grid carbon intensity; not every prompt |
| Water | 0.26 mL | Cooling and associated data-center infrastructure; not a carbon figure |
Google says the figures are not representative of every prompt or indicative of future performance, and that the claims have not been independently verified. Treat them as a dated reference for that product and method—not as the footprint of every interaction with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or another chatbot. The company’s explanation is at Google Cloud’s 2025 measurement article.
Google’s technical paper describes a comprehensive boundary that includes full-system dynamic power, production utilization, CPU and memory, idle machines, data-center overhead and other serving components. For the same median prompt, its narrower active-TPU/GPU-only calculation is 0.10 Wh, 0.02 gCO₂e and 0.12 mL of water. Those values are not contradictory: they answer different boundary questions. See Measuring the environmental impact of delivering AI at Google Scale.
Why two credible estimates can differ by orders of magnitude
Prompt and response workload
Token count is a major driver. A short answer and a long answer from the same model do not require the same computation. Extended reasoning, repeated tool calls, agentic loops and retries add inference passes. Image, audio and video generation generally have different—and often larger—workloads than short text generation. Record input tokens, output tokens, requested reasoning or thinking mode, media type and the number of tool calls when you can.

Model and serving configuration
Model size, quantization, accelerator type, batching, utilization and the way a provider routes requests all affect energy per interaction. A laboratory benchmark may run one request on an otherwise idle machine, while a production service shares hardware across many users. A production average and a worst-case benchmark should not be averaged together.
System boundary
An accelerator-only estimate is narrower than one that includes CPUs, memory, networking, idle capacity, storage and data-center overhead. Google’s two values above demonstrate how the same prompt changes when the boundary changes. Always name what is included.
Electricity carbon basis
Multiply by the carbon intensity for the electricity actually serving the workload and identify the time period. A location-based grid factor reflects average electricity generation in a region. A market-based factor can recognize contractual clean-energy procurement; the two accounting bases can produce different results for the same physical electricity use. If the provider does not disclose its serving region and accounting basis, label your factor as an assumption.
Evidence quality
Direct production measurement, a bottom-up modeled scenario, a benchmark and a public calculator are different kinds of evidence. They should not be presented as equally certain or combined without checking their assumptions.
Published modeled scenarios that show workload sensitivity
Microsoft Research’s September 2025 analysis models frontier-scale inference on an H100 node under stated workload, utilization and power-usage-effectiveness assumptions. It estimates a 0.34 Wh median per query, with an interquartile range of 0.18–0.67 Wh. In a test-time-scaling scenario using 15 times more tokens, the modeled median rises to 4.32 Wh. These are scenarios, not measurements of every chatbot request. Read the assumptions in Microsoft Research’s September 2025 analysis.

Step-by-step: make your own defensible estimate
- Define the interaction. Specify the provider and model if known, text versus media, input and output size, reasoning mode, tool calls and number of requests. For a personal budget, choose a representative week or month rather than one unusually long exchange.
- Choose an energy value or range. Prefer a provider’s production disclosure for the same workload. Otherwise use a clearly labeled modeled value, such as 0.34 Wh (0.18–0.67 Wh IQR) for Microsoft Research’s stated frontier-model scenario. For heavy reasoning, do not silently substitute the short-query value; use an appropriate high-workload scenario or present a wide range.
- Choose a carbon-intensity factor. Use a location- and date-specific gCO₂e/kWh factor when the serving region is known. If it is unknown, state the assumed region, year and whether the factor is location-based or market-based.
- Apply the formula. Divide Wh by 1,000, then multiply by gCO₂e/kWh. Keep the units in the calculation so a reader can reproduce it.
- Scale only comparable requests. Multiply by the count of interactions only when the workload and assumptions are comparable. Separate ordinary chat, long reasoning, image generation and agentic jobs into different groups.
- Report uncertainty and exclusions. Give a range when energy or grid data are uncertain. State whether the result excludes embodied hardware, your device, network equipment, water and non-electricity impacts.
Worked examples (illustrative arithmetic, not provider telemetry)
The examples below show the calculation with explicit assumptions. They are not measurements of an individual account.
| Scenario | Energy assumption | Carbon-intensity assumption | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short interaction | 0.24 Wh (Google’s dated median reference) | 400 gCO₂e/kWh, illustrative location-based factor | 0.24 ÷ 1,000 × 400 | 0.096 gCO₂e |
| Microsoft modeled median | 0.34 Wh | 400 gCO₂e/kWh, illustrative factor | 0.34 ÷ 1,000 × 400 | 0.136 gCO₂e |
| Microsoft modeled 15×-token scenario | 4.32 Wh | 400 gCO₂e/kWh, illustrative factor | 4.32 ÷ 1,000 × 400 | 1.728 gCO₂e |
The first row is not a restatement of Google’s 0.03 gCO₂e disclosure: the table deliberately applies a hypothetical 400 gCO₂e/kWh factor, whereas Google used its 2024 average fleetwide grid intensity. Change the factor and the result changes proportionally.
For 100 identical interactions in the Microsoft median scenario, the illustrative total is 13.6 gCO₂e (0.136 g × 100). Do not apply that multiplication to a mixed month without grouping requests by workload.
How to use public carbon calculators without overclaiming
Calculators are useful for exposing assumptions, not for observing a private session. InferenceCarbon’s methodology describes modeled output length, provider serving-site assumptions, grid factors and uncertainty; it says frontier-model energy is not publicly disclosed and its results are bounded estimates rather than meter readings. Review InferenceCarbon’s methodology.
AIECO describes a pipeline that estimates tokens, output length, energy per token, data-center overhead and a regional grid factor, and explicitly calls its output an estimate. Its assumptions are documented at AIECO’s methodology page.
For every calculator result, save:
- the calculator name, version or methodology date;
- model, prompt size, output size and any reasoning or media setting;
- serving geography or chosen grid factor;
- energy boundary and data-center overhead assumptions;
- the emissions basis (location-based, market-based or another definition);
- whether embodied hardware, water or only operational electricity is included.
Do not average outputs from tools that use incompatible boundaries or workloads. A calculator cannot know the exact hardware, utilization, data-center region or electricity mix for a private session unless the provider supplies those data.

Operational prompts are only one part of an AI system’s footprint
Inference happens repeatedly after a model is trained. The OECD notes that repeated inference can become more energy- and water-intensive over an AI system’s life cycle, while training is conducted relatively few times. This means a low per-prompt estimate can still accumulate at large deployment scale. The OECD discussion is in Digital technologies and the environment.
Training energy, model development, data collection, hardware manufacturing, data-center construction and end-user devices require separate allocation methods. Do not add a training number to a per-prompt electricity estimate unless the method explains how that shared impact is allocated across the model’s expected use.
Water should remain a separate line item. Google’s paper reports water associated with cooling and related infrastructure, while its emissions figure uses electricity-related market-based emissions and embodied accelerator emissions under its stated comprehensive method. A milliliter value cannot be converted into grams of CO₂e without an additional, defensible life-cycle model.
How to report a range when provider data are missing
A useful personal report can be short but explicit:
- Workload: number of ordinary prompts, long reasoning prompts, media generations and tool calls.
- Energy scenarios: low, central and high Wh values tied to named methods or studies.
- Grid scenarios: the selected gCO₂e/kWh factor, geography, year and accounting basis.
- Output: a low-to-high gCO₂e range for each workload category and a total for the period.
- Boundary: operational serving electricity only, or an explicitly expanded life-cycle scope.
For example, you might present Microsoft Research’s 0.18–0.67 Wh interquartile range as a modeled range for a specified frontier-query workload, then show totals under two clearly named grid factors. Do not describe that interval as the uncertainty for every chatbot or every prompt.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Calling a provider’s median “the footprint of one prompt”
Correction: retain the product, date, median definition and provider qualifications. A median does not describe long-tail reasoning, media jobs or future performance.
Using a grid factor without saying whose grid it represents
Correction: identify region, year and location-based or market-based accounting. If the serving location is unknown, call the factor an assumption.
Mixing active-accelerator and whole-data-center values
Correction: compare like with like, or show the boundary difference explicitly, as Google does with 0.10 Wh versus 0.24 Wh for its median prompt.
Turning water or embodied impacts into operational CO₂
Correction: report water and embodied emissions in their own categories and cite the allocation method.
Applying a short-query estimate to an agentic workflow
Correction: count every model call, tool loop and generated output, and use a workload scenario that reflects the extra tokens.
Presenting a calculator output as a meter reading
Correction: label it a modeled estimate, preserve the calculator’s assumptions and give a range when inputs are uncertain.
What a credible estimate should say
A transparent statement might read: “For 1,000 ordinary text interactions during June 2026, I used an assumed 0.34 Wh per query from Microsoft Research’s September 2025 modeled frontier-query scenario, an assumed 400 gCO₂e/kWh location-based factor, and a whole-serving boundary as defined by that scenario. The resulting operational estimate is 136 gCO₂e. It excludes my device and network, and it is not a measurement of the provider’s private telemetry.”
