To estimate a crypto network fee, select the network and prepare the transaction in your wallet, then review its fee estimate, speed or priority setting, and total debit immediately before signing. The fee is separate from the amount you send. There is no universal crypto fee: the total depends on the blockchain, the transaction’s size or computational work, current demand, and any priority setting.
What a network fee pays for
A network fee pays for processing a transaction on a particular blockchain. It is not the same as the amount transferred: sending a certain quantity of cryptocurrency does not, by itself, tell you what the network fee will be. The fee is calculated and displayed according to the selected network’s rules, and the unit shown may not be a familiar currency amount.

Before approving a transaction, look at the wallet’s actual preview rather than relying on a generic fee figure. Check that the selected network matches the recipient’s instructions, identify the fee denomination, and distinguish the estimated charge from any maximum fee cap. A displayed estimate is a prediction, not a guarantee of the final charge or confirmation time.

A simple transfer and a more involved action can consume different resources, and network demand can change between the moment you start preparing a transaction and the moment you sign it. A live dollar amount also depends on the exchange rate used to convert the network’s fee unit. Treat any such conversion as a time-specific aid, not a fixed price for sending crypto.

A practical way to estimate the fee
Use the same wallet and transaction details you intend to send. Changing the network, recipient, asset, amount, or action may change what the transaction requires and therefore change its fee estimate.
- Confirm the network. Select the network specified by the recipient. The same asset may be transferable on different networks, but their fee units and calculation rules are not interchangeable.
- Prepare the exact action. Enter the recipient and amount, and choose the intended action. A simple transfer and a token transfer or contract interaction can require different amounts of work, even on the same network.
- Open the fee details. Review the wallet’s estimate and its available speed or priority choices. If the wallet shows a fee rate as well as a total, do not mistake the rate for the amount that will be deducted.
- Check the total debit and any cap. Determine how much will leave the account in total, including the amount transferred and the network fee. On networks that show a maximum fee, note that it may be a cap rather than the expected final charge.
- Refresh the estimate just before signing. Network demand and fee conditions can change. If the transaction details or speed setting change, inspect the updated preview before approving.
The wallet preview is the most relevant estimate for the transaction you have prepared. An external estimator can help provide context, but it may assume different transaction details or update at a different time. Use it as a comparison point, not as a replacement for the final wallet preview. If the wallet gives a speed choice, understand that a faster or higher-priority option is intended to improve inclusion priority; it does not make confirmation certain.
When reviewing the preview, pause long enough to answer four practical questions: Is this the network the recipient expects? Is the displayed number a rate or a total? Does the estimate reflect the action I am actually taking? And what is the maximum amount the wallet may reserve or debit? If any of those points are unclear, open the fee details or the wallet’s help information before signing.

How fees are estimated on Bitcoin
Bitcoin fees are commonly described using a fee rate in satoshis per virtual byte, abbreviated sat/vB. The fee depends on that rate and the transaction’s virtual size:
Estimated fee = fee rate in sat/vB × transaction size in virtual bytes
Transaction size is affected by the transaction’s inputs and outputs, not simply by the BTC amount being sent. Bitcoin.org gives a simple one-input, two-output payment as an example of around 140 virtual bytes. That is a typical example, not a fixed size for every transaction; more inputs or outputs make a transaction larger. If two Bitcoin transactions have the same virtual size, sending a different BTC amount does not by itself change the fee.
This explains why a fee-rate quote alone cannot tell you the full cost. The wallet needs to estimate both the rate likely to be competitive and the virtual size of the transaction it is preparing. The one-input, two-output example is a useful scale reference, but a transaction with more inputs or outputs will have a different size. A reader should therefore use the estimate for the prepared transaction rather than multiply a quoted rate by a generic size and assume the result will match.

Wallets may offer different fee rates or estimated confirmation speeds. A higher rate aims to make a transaction more competitive for inclusion; a lower rate may mean waiting longer, particularly when demand for block space is high. A low fee is not a promise that the transaction will confirm quickly.

Bitcoin.org cautions that “Different wallets can suggest different numbers for the same moment — fee estimation is a prediction, not an exact science.” Different estimates can reflect different prediction methods or assumptions about future demand. Compare the proposed total for the same transaction, not just the sat/vB figure.
If two wallets disagree, first make sure they are evaluating the same transaction and that you are comparing the same kind of figure. One screen may emphasize a fee rate while another foregrounds the estimated total or a speed option. Even with matching details, the estimate is still a forecast of demand, so a difference does not establish that one wallet has a guaranteed answer. Use the wallet you will send from to review the final transaction and fee.
If a Bitcoin transaction is delayed
A low-fee transaction that remains in the mempool may confirm later if demand falls. Some wallets support Replace-by-Fee (RBF), which can be used to raise the fee on an eligible transaction. Whether that option is available and how to use it depends on the wallet and transaction state. Check the wallet’s instructions and confirm the transaction’s status before attempting a replacement; do not assume that sending another payment will replace the pending one.
In practice, a delay does not mean the original estimate was a promise of a particular confirmation time. Check the transaction status in the wallet, then follow that wallet’s guidance if it offers a replacement option. Avoid making a second payment simply because the first has not appeared yet: the transaction state and wallet behavior matter when deciding what to do next.
How fees are estimated on Ethereum
Ethereum uses gas, a unit that measures the computational work a transaction requires. A broad fee calculation is:
Fee = gas used × (base fee per gas + priority fee per gas)
The base fee is set by the protocol and changes with block usage. The priority fee is a tip that can affect inclusion priority. A simple ETH transfer generally requires less computational work than a token transfer or a smart-contract action, so transaction type matters when estimating cost.
Recommended Free Tools
Ethereum.org gives 21,000 gas as the standard amount for a simple ETH transfer. Treat that as a documentation reference, not a prediction of the final cost for every transaction or a current price in dollars. A more complex action may use a different amount of gas, and the fee per unit of gas changes with network conditions.

The two parts of the calculation answer different questions: gas used reflects the work required by the transaction, while the base fee and priority fee are prices per unit of gas. A familiar 21,000-gas reference does not tell you the transaction’s total on its own; the per-gas amounts and the exact action also matter. A token transfer or contract interaction should not be estimated as though it were a simple ETH transfer.
Estimated fee versus maximum fee
For an EIP-1559-style transaction, a wallet may show a maximum fee per gas. That figure is a cap, not necessarily the amount ultimately charged: any unused difference is refunded. Review both the wallet’s estimated total and the maximum amount it may reserve, so you understand both the likely charge and the potential temporary limit on the funds available.
A cap is useful to understand before signing because it describes the maximum permitted fee setting, not necessarily the final cost. Do not read it as an amount that will automatically be charged, and do not ignore it just because the estimate is lower. Look at the estimated total alongside the cap and make sure the wallet’s preview is for the action you intend to perform.

How fees are estimated on Solana
Solana fees are paid in SOL and consist of a base fee plus any prioritization fee. Solana Documentation gives a documented base fee of 5,000 lamports per signature. This is a protocol parameter, not a dollar price or a guarantee that every transaction’s total will be exactly that amount.
A prioritization fee depends on the compute-unit price and compute-unit limit. Solana Documentation defines the calculation as:
Prioritization fee = (compute-unit price × compute-unit limit) ÷ 1,000,000 lamports, rounded up

The base-fee figure is useful context for understanding the network’s documented fee mechanics, but it is not a complete quote for every action. If a wallet shows a prioritization fee or a different fee denomination, read the total shown for the transaction rather than assuming the base fee is the full amount. The 5,000-lamport figure is a protocol-unit reference, not a current dollar estimate.
Compare estimates without confusing the units
A Bitcoin sat/vB rate, an Ethereum gas price, and a Solana lamport amount are different kinds of figures. They cannot be compared directly to determine which transaction costs less. Compare transaction totals for the same network and action, and account for whether the figure is a rate, an estimated total, or a maximum cap.
| Network | What to inspect | Key fee drivers | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin | Fee rate in sat/vB and estimated total | Fee rate and transaction virtual size, including inputs and outputs | Bitcoin.org’s example of around 140 vB applies to a simple one-input, two-output payment; actual size varies. |
| Ethereum | Estimated total, gas requirement, and any maximum fee | Gas used, base fee, and priority fee | 21,000 gas is Ethereum.org’s standard-transfer reference, not a prediction for all transactions. |
| Solana | Total in SOL or the displayed fee denomination, and any priority setting | Base fee per signature and any prioritization fee | The documented base is 5,000 lamports per signature; the transaction total can differ. |

- Fee unit and total: Is the number a per-unit rate or the total charge?
- Priority choice: Does the estimate use a faster or higher-priority setting?
- Estimate or cap: Is the displayed amount the expected fee, a maximum, or both?
- Transaction work or size: Does the estimate reflect the exact transaction rather than a simpler transfer?
- Current demand: Could congestion change the likelihood or speed of inclusion?
Comparing two different networks is most useful when you compare the full fee for the actual transaction on each network, not their raw protocol units. A sat/vB rate is not itself a Bitcoin transaction total, just as a per-gas amount is not an Ethereum total. A Solana lamport figure also needs to be understood in the context of its fee components and the wallet’s displayed total. Translating each total into a common currency can aid understanding, but only if the conversion time and exchange-rate source are clear.
A dollar conversion may make a fee easier to interpret, but it depends on the exchange rate and the fee conditions at the time of conversion. Treat it as a time-sensitive translation, not a stable network price. The documentation figures above are in protocol units; they are not current dollar estimates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the fee differs from the amount you send
The transfer amount answers how much value you intend to deliver. The network fee answers what the blockchain charges to process the transaction. These are separate parts of the transaction, so the total debit can exceed the amount sent. The fee does not necessarily rise in proportion to that amount: Bitcoin transaction size, Ethereum gas requirements, or Solana’s fee settings are the relevant mechanics described above.
For example, the Bitcoin calculation uses the transaction’s virtual size and fee rate rather than the BTC amount as its direct inputs. Ethereum’s calculation depends on gas and per-gas fees, while Solana’s documented fee structure uses a base fee and may include prioritization. Those differences explain why a percentage of the transfer amount is not a reliable general way to estimate a network fee.
Also distinguish a blockchain network fee from a charge an exchange may impose for withdrawing funds. An exchange can set its own withdrawal pricing; that is separate from the network fee mechanics covered here. Check the exchange’s withdrawal screen and terms if you are sending from an exchange account.

Common fee-estimation mistakes
- Assuming one standard fee applies to all crypto. Networks use different fee units and rules, and the transaction itself affects the estimate.
- Reading a rate as the total. On Bitcoin, sat/vB must be considered alongside virtual size. On Ethereum, a per-gas figure must be considered alongside gas used.
- Treating a network reference value as a live quote. The documented Bitcoin size example, Ethereum gas reference, and Solana base fee explain mechanics; none is a universal current price in dollars.
- Assuming a low estimate guarantees fast confirmation. Lower priority can mean waiting, and demand can change after the estimate is shown.
- Ignoring the selected network. A fee estimate is meaningful only for the network actually selected. Confirm it matches the recipient’s instructions before approving.
- Approving an old preview. Estimates may change while preparing a transaction. Recheck the exact fee, speed option, and total debit immediately before signing.
- Comparing unrelated estimates. A quote for a simple transfer cannot reliably stand in for a token transfer or contract action, and estimates from different moments may reflect different network conditions.
- Confusing an exchange withdrawal charge with the network fee. Check the exchange’s own withdrawal information separately; its pricing is not the same as the blockchain fee.
Final pre-send check
- The network matches the recipient’s instructions.
- The fee denomination and total are clear.
- The speed or priority option reflects how quickly you want the transaction considered.
- Any maximum fee is understood as a cap, not automatically the final charge.
- The transaction details are final and the wallet preview has been refreshed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much are crypto transaction fees?
There is no universal fee for crypto. The amount depends on the selected blockchain, the transaction’s size or computational work, network demand, and any priority setting. Review the exact transaction preview in your wallet for the current estimate.
How do I calculate a network fee before sending?
Prepare the exact transaction in your wallet, then review its fee estimate, speed or priority option, fee unit, and total debit. Bitcoin estimates use a fee rate and virtual size; Ethereum estimates depend on gas and per-gas fees; Solana fees include a base fee and may include a prioritization fee. Refresh the estimate immediately before signing.
Why is the network fee different from the amount I’m sending?
The amount sent is the value you intend to transfer. The network fee pays for processing the transaction and is calculated under the network’s rules. It is separate and does not necessarily rise in proportion to the transfer amount.
Can I rely on a low fee estimate to confirm quickly?
No. A low fee or priority setting can mean waiting, and network demand can change after the estimate appears. A wallet estimate predicts conditions; it does not guarantee a confirmation time.
Why do two wallets show different Bitcoin fees?
Fee estimates are predictions of future block demand, and wallets may use different prediction methods or assumptions. Bitcoin.org notes that different wallets can suggest different numbers for the same moment. Compare estimates for the same transaction and look at both the rate and total.
Is Ethereum’s maximum fee the amount I will pay?
Not necessarily. For an EIP-1559-style transaction, the maximum fee per gas is a cap. The final charge can be lower, and any unused difference is refunded. Review both the estimated total and the maximum amount the wallet may reserve.
Is an exchange withdrawal fee the same as a network fee?
No. An exchange may impose its own withdrawal charge, which is separate from the blockchain network fee. Check the exchange’s withdrawal screen and terms as well as the wallet or transaction preview.
The Bottom Line
There is no flat fee for sending crypto. Prepare the exact transaction on the correct network, compare the wallet’s estimate and any cap in the right units, and refresh the preview immediately before signing. Treat rates and protocol reference figures as explanations of how fees work—not guarantees of a live price or confirmation time.
