Estimate a Bitcoin miner’s electricity cost from its actual wall power, operating hours and the all-in electricity rate you pay. Then compare that bill with estimated mining proceeds after pool fees and other operating expenses. For investment payback, also include the hardware and setup costs. These are scenario estimates, not guaranteed income: network competition, Bitcoin’s price and mining conditions can change.
1. Calculate the electricity bill
The basic calculation is:
Daily electricity cost = power at the wall (kW) × operating hours per day × all-in electricity rate per kWh
For uninterrupted operation, daily energy use is power in kilowatts multiplied by 24 hours. Convert watts to kilowatts by dividing by 1,000. Use the miner’s measured wall draw when available; a manufacturer’s rating is a fallback, not a substitute for the load your installation actually draws.
Use the rate that applies to the mining load
Use your marginal, all-in rate—the amount an additional kWh costs at the location and time the miner runs. Depending on your tariff, that can include delivery charges, taxes, time-of-use rates or demand charges. A flat advertised energy rate may not reflect the full bill. The U.S. Energy Information Administration identifies electricity as the primary operating cost of a cryptocurrency mining facility (EIA, February 1, 2024).

Account for cooling, ventilation and downtime
If separate cooling or ventilation equipment serves the miner, add its electricity use. Mining sites may consume power both to run machines and to cool equipment, as the EIA explains. For a continuously running miner, use 24 operating hours per day; if you expect curtailment, maintenance or other downtime, use realistic operating hours instead. Measured uptime and site power use make the estimate more representative.
For example, if a hypothetical miner draws P watts at the wall, runs H hours per day and the all-in rate is R per kWh, estimated daily electricity cost is (P ÷ 1,000) × H × R. Substitute your own measured power, schedule and tariff; there is no universal electricity price to use.

2. Estimate mining proceeds
Hashrate is the miner’s contribution to Bitcoin’s mining work, but it does not by itself determine revenue. Expected proceeds depend on the miner’s hashrate relative to competing network work, block subsidies and transaction fees, as well as the pool’s payout method and rules. Pool participants submit shares, and the pool distributes proceeds under its chosen reward method (Bitcoin Developer Guide).
To estimate proceeds for a defined period, use the miner’s effective hashrate and uptime, a dated estimate of network conditions, assumptions for block rewards and transaction fees, and the applicable pool payout rules. Convert estimated Bitcoin proceeds to fiat using an explicitly dated Bitcoin price assumption. A calculator’s result is only as current and as suitable for your setup as those inputs.

- 【One-click switching interface】Choosing from 5 button to quick access different parameters. Press M to display KWH and electricity cost. Press + to display Watt (active power) and VA (apparent Power). Press OK to display true RMS voltage Vrms and true RMS current Arms. Press - to display Hz ( frequency) and PF (power factor). Press ↺ to display the maximum and minimum power. Press OK for 3s to display the complete accumulated time.
- 【Monitor home appliances】Insert the watt meter between the appliance and the power outlet. This energy meter will measure the power consumption of the appliance and automatically calculate the electricity bill, only being calculated if the appliance is running at a power greater than 2 watts. Suitable for computers, games consoles, printers, TVs, refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, routers, etc.
- 【Multiple protection】When the load power exceed the overload setting value, power consumption exceed KWH alarm setting value, electricity cost exceed cost alarm setting value, LCD displays "Overload", "KWh ALARM" or "COST ALARM" and LED light flashes continuously to warn user. The default overload power is 3680W ( 0~3680W adjustable ). In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Ideal for monitoring the energy consumption of household appliances.
- 【Data storage】The power consumption monitor plug has a built-in high-precision chip that stores data in the event of a power failure. It has a reset function and a function to delete measurement data but retain setting parameters for switching between multiple appliances. It can effectively monitor the electricity consumption, reduce electricity bills and save energy.
- 【Upgraded LCD display】Wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers, especially if the energy meter is not at eye level, or is only viewable from an angle.
3. Separate operating profit from payback
Operating profit is the estimated proceeds for a period minus the costs of operating during that period. Hardware expenditure is a separate capital cost, so an operating estimate that excludes the machine’s purchase price does not show whether the investment will pay back.
- Operating profit estimate: expected fiat proceeds − electricity − pool fees − other recurring operating costs.
- Payback estimate: compare cumulative estimated operating profit with hardware and setup costs, including purchase, shipping and installation.
Calculator inputs commonly distinguish operating assumptions from hardware expenditure (Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index). A payback period is not assured: a change in revenue or costs can extend it, and the machine may not recover its upfront cost.

4. Build scenarios instead of trusting one forecast
Make a base estimate and vary the assumptions that can materially change the result. Keep the period and date of each volatile input visible so you can tell what the estimate represents.
- Electricity: test the actual tariff and plausible changes in time-of-use charges or operating hours.
- Performance: use measured wall power, realistic uptime and the miner’s effective hashrate.
- Mining conditions: vary network hashrate or difficulty, block transaction fees and pool fees.
- Revenue conversion: test more than one dated Bitcoin price assumption rather than treating a spot price as permanent.
- Capital recovery: include delivered hardware and setup cost when evaluating payback, not just daily operating margin.
Network estimates can be smoothed or modeled over different periods. For example, Cambridge’s index applies a seven-day moving average to reduce short-term hashrate volatility; its monthly consumption estimates assume constant power use over 24 hours at its daily best-guess estimate (Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index). Those choices describe the index’s methodology, not a prediction of an individual miner’s earnings.

5. Put industry figures in context
Industry averages can provide context, but they cannot replace your own power and tariff inputs. The Cambridge Digital Mining Industry Report, published in 2025, estimates industry-wide SHA-256 ASIC efficiency at 28.2 joules per terahash as of June 2024, a reported 24% year-over-year improvement. The report also gives a median electricity cost of $45/MWh and a median all-in cost of $55.5/MWh. These are industry medians, not household rates, a particular miner’s costs or universal break-even thresholds.
Separately, the EIA’s February 1, 2024 analysis estimated cryptocurrency mining—not Bitcoin mining alone—at 0.6%–2.3% of U.S. electricity consumption. The estimate was a dated preliminary national figure; the EIA says it discontinued its emergency collection of survey data for Form EIA-862. It is useful background on scale, not an input for calculating an individual electricity bill (EIA analysis).
