The exact labels, choices, and recovery steps vary by brokerage, so follow the instructions shown for your own account.
How do I turn on two-factor authentication?
- Open the official broker site or app. Type the broker’s website address yourself or use its official app, then sign in. Avoid links in unexpected messages.
- Open account security settings. Look under Profile, Security Settings, Security Center, or a similarly named area. CISA notes that services may call the feature “Two Factor Authentication,” “Multifactor Authentication,” or “Two Step Factor Authentication” (CISA: Turn On MFA).
- Find the sign-in verification control. Choose the option labeled MFA, 2FA, two-step verification, or login security, then enable it or select the setting that requires a second check.
- Select an available method and complete enrollment. Depending on the broker, you may need to approve a notification, link an authenticator app, confirm a phone number, or enter a one-time code. Use only choices presented in your account.
- Set how often the broker should ask. If offered, decide whether the extra check should occur at every login or only on devices the broker does not recognize.
- Review recovery details before changing devices. Check that contact information used for alerts or account recovery is current, and find the broker’s instructions for a lost phone or reset authenticator.
- Verify enrollment. If practical and consistent with the broker’s instructions, sign out and sign back in to confirm you can complete the selected check.
MFA adds a check beyond your password; it is an additional security layer, not a replacement for a strong, private password (CISA).

Where are the security settings?
There is no universal menu path across brokerage firms. Start with the account profile or security area and search for terms such as “2-step verification,” “MFA,” or “login verification.” CISA’s general recommendation is to begin with the security settings on frequently used accounts (CISA: Turn On MFA).
Fidelity example
Fidelity’s guidance points customers to security settings or the Fidelity mobile app. It describes approving a login with a mobile-app notification or connecting an authenticator app. The examples named include Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and Apple’s Passwords app for iOS (Fidelity: Security Overview). Fidelity says trusted devices can skip MFA at later logins, although certain sensitive transactions may still require it; it also advises against marking public devices as trusted.

Charles Schwab example
Schwab’s tutorial gives the path Profile > Security Settings > 2-Step Verification. Its example lets customers choose “Only on untrusted devices” or “Always at login,” then select a method. The tutorial demonstrates text verification to a mobile number already added to the account (Schwab: 2-Step Verification). These are Schwab’s documented options, not a guarantee that every brokerage offers the same controls.
Robinhood example
Robinhood’s verification overview describes checks that may be requested for sign-ins or account changes, including device approval, an SMS one-time code, bank verification, a selfie, or an image of government ID. The overview does not provide a complete, stable enrollment path, so use Robinhood’s current in-app help for exact navigation (Robinhood: Verification Requests).

Can I use an authenticator app?
Only if your brokerage currently supports one. Fidelity says it supports most authenticator apps and names Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and Apple’s Passwords app as examples (Fidelity: Security Overview). That does not establish compatibility at other firms; check your own security settings and the broker’s help page before setting up an app.

Should I require a code every time I log in?
If your broker offers a choice, weigh the added friction of checking at every login against the convenience of trusting selected devices. Schwab documents “Always at login” and “Only on untrusted devices” as options in its setup example (Schwab: 2-Step Verification). Fidelity says trusted devices may skip MFA on later logins, while some sensitive transactions can still trigger it (Fidelity: Security Overview).
Use the broker’s trusted-device feature only on a device you control. Fidelity specifically warns customers not to mark public devices as trusted. The setting names and behavior at other firms may differ.

What happens if I lose my phone?
Recovery is broker-specific. Before replacing a phone, changing a number, or resetting an authenticator, check the firm’s recovery instructions and make sure the contact information on file is current. Fidelity says accurate contact details support alerts about important transactions and profile updates (Fidelity: Security Overview).
Recommended Free Tools
Schwab says its technical support can generate a code if a customer cannot log in through two-factor authentication (Schwab: 2-Step Verification). That is a Schwab-specific option, not a universal recovery process. Contact your brokerage through its official site or published support channel if you lose access to an enrolled method.

How to protect your verification codes
- Never share a password or one-time security code with an unexpected caller, text sender, or email sender.
- Use the broker’s official app or type its official web address rather than following a suspicious link.
- Fidelity says it will not request login credentials or a security code through an unsolicited communication (Fidelity: Security Overview).
- Keep your password protected even after enabling MFA; an extra factor does not guarantee protection from every scam or account takeover.
