GST Portal correspondence is sent to the taxpayer’s registered email address and mobile number. GSTN’s documented way to correct those contact details is through Services > Registration > Amendment of Registration Non-Core Fields. If an expected message is missing, check spam or junk; GSTN specifically recommends this when an email OTP does not reach the inbox. The GSTN tutorials reviewed do not document a general notification on/off switch or one universal sender address to allowlist.
What “enabling notifications” means on the GST Portal
For the contact details described in GSTN’s enrolment guidance, correspondence is routed to the email address and mobile number registered for the taxpayer. If those details are outdated or incorrect, the practical step is to update the relevant registration record—not to look for a general alert switch.

GSTN’s tutorials describe notifications for particular events. For example, a tutorial on creating the GSTR-1 outward supplies return says filing generates an email and SMS notification; the taxpayer dashboard tutorial describes certain expiry-related email and SMS reminders. These examples do not establish that every notice, portal action, or account event will trigger an alert, or that every alert will arrive through both channels.

The tutorials reviewed do not establish a universal notification preference toggle. They also do not identify one sender address that every taxpayer should add to an allowlist. Treat those as limits of the documented guidance, not proof that the portal could never add such options.

Check which registered contact details need attention
Before making an amendment, determine whether the email address or mobile number in the registration record is actually wrong or no longer accessible. The relevant non-core amendment can involve the Authorized Signatory details, or the Promoter/Partner details when that person is also the primary authorized signatory. The GSTN tutorial describes a different route within the same amendment for that arrangement.
- If the primary authorized signatory is the taxpayer contact whose details need changing, use the Authorized Signatory tab.
- If the promoter or partner and primary authorized signatory are the same person, the tutorial describes updating the details under Promoter/Partner.
- If neither record is wrong, do not change registration details merely because one message was filtered or delayed. First check the mailbox and sign in to review notices and pending actions.
Update the authorized signatory’s email or mobile number
- Sign in to the GST Portal using the taxpayer’s account.
- Open Services > Registration > Amendment of Registration Non-Core Fields.
- Open the Authorized Signatory tab and edit the applicable email and/or mobile field, if the primary authorized signatory is the taxpayer contact being updated.
- Save the changes and complete the OTP verification requested by the portal. The tutorial describes verification as part of this amendment workflow.
- Review the entered details, then submit the amendment. GSTN’s tutorial says the updated details apply after submission.
For a taxpayer whose promoter/partner is also the primary authorized signatory, the GSTN tutorial places the edit under Promoter/Partner. It describes separate OTPs being sent to the new email address and mobile number before proceeding. Follow the live portal prompts: labels and verification steps can change, and the correct route depends on the signatory arrangement recorded for that taxpayer.

Keep access to the existing account and the new contact channels while completing the workflow. The amendment is not complete merely because a field has been edited; follow the portal’s requested verification and submit the change.

Start with spam and junk folders
When an expected email OTP is absent from the inbox, GSTN’s enrolment tutorial explicitly says to check the spam folder. Apply the same first check when a notice-related message is missing: look in spam or junk, as well as any quarantine area your email provider makes available.

Review mailbox rules and filters
Check whether a mailbox rule, filter, forwarding rule, or organization-level quarantine could have moved or blocked the message. If you use a work or managed email account, your email administrator or provider’s instructions may be needed to identify quarantined mail. The GSTN material cited here does not supply a universal sender address to add to an allowlist, so do not rely on an address found elsewhere unless it is confirmed through official GSTN guidance.
Check the registered contact and the portal itself
Confirm that the email address and mobile number registered for the taxpayer are current and accessible. If a contact detail needs correction, use the non-core amendment process rather than assuming a missing email means notifications are switched off. Also sign in to the GST Portal periodically to review notices and pending actions; the documented examples of email and SMS alerts are event-specific, not a guarantee that each item will reach both channels.

If an OTP or notice alert still does not arrive
- Email OTP missing: Check spam/junk and mailbox quarantine first, as GSTN specifically advises for an OTP. Confirm that the registered email is accessible. If the email record is wrong, follow the appropriate amendment workflow.
- SMS OTP missing: Confirm that the registered mobile number is current and accessible. GSTN’s login guidance describes OTP authentication using the registered email and mobile; the precise verification prompt is determined by the portal.
- Notice alert missing but no OTP is involved: Check spam, junk, filters, and quarantine, then sign in to review the portal for notices and pending actions. A missing alert alone does not establish that the notice is absent from the portal.
- Contact details are correct but delivery remains a problem: Follow the email provider’s or administrator’s quarantine and filtering guidance, and use the portal to check for pending items instead of assuming that every event generates both email and SMS.
Do not treat an email or SMS notification as a substitute for checking the portal. GSTN’s materials document selected notification scenarios, not an assurance that every correspondence or action will be delivered to both registered channels.
What the GSTN tutorials do and do not confirm
The GSTN tutorial Non-Core Fields documents changing registered email and mobile details, OTP validation, and submitting the amendment. Enrolment of Existing Taxpayer with Provisional ID and Password says correspondence goes to registered contact details and advises checking spam when an email OTP is not in the inbox. The tutorials on login authentication, GSTR-1 filing, and taxpayer search describe specific OTP or event-related email/SMS examples.

Taken together, that guidance supports updating the correct registration contact, completing the portal’s verification and submission steps, checking filtered mail, and reviewing the portal for pending items. It does not support claiming that all GST notices trigger both email and SMS, that there is a documented master notification toggle, or that one universal sender address should always be allowlisted.
