You can sometimes earn cryptocurrency without buying it by completing an eligible exchange Learn & Earn campaign. That may still require identity verification, quiz answers, and an open reward allocation. Referral promotions may require a qualifying purchase, while staking and lending earn rewards only on crypto you already own or deposit. None guarantees meaningful income, and crypto’s value can fall.
Which ways of earning crypto require no purchase?
Of the options covered here, Learn & Earn campaigns are the clearest route that may not require an upfront purchase. The other methods have different requirements: referrals may depend on a qualifying purchase, and staking or lending requires assets you already own or supply. Check the terms of the specific offer before you spend money, share personal information, or commit funds.
Learn & Earn campaigns
Some exchanges offer cryptocurrency rewards for studying educational material and completing quizzes. Binance’s support guide says participants may need a verified account, correct answers, and eligibility for the targeted campaign. Offers can be limited by country, capped or first-come, and closed when rewards run out; the token’s value can also change. Check the exchange’s logged-in campaign page or official announcement for current terms: Binance’s Learn & Earn guide.
A Binance announcement for June 2026 advertised 0.00001 BTC in token vouchers for eligible new users who registered after June 1, completed the quiz correctly, and met the campaign’s other conditions. It limited the monthly reward to the first 5,000 qualifying new users and said participation would close after the allocation was distributed. This is a dated example, not a current offer or a typical reward: Binance’s June 2026 campaign announcement.

Binance’s general guide says its token vouchers are valid for 14 days after distribution. That term applies to the vouchers described in that guide, not to every exchange reward. Check how a campaign pays out, whether its reward can be withdrawn or converted, and any expiry before participating.
Referral and signup promotions
A referral bonus is not automatically free crypto. Coinbase’s help page describes incentives that may require a qualifying purchase, with conditions and reward details varying by offer and region. Before acting, check the exact purchase requirement, deadline, account qualifications, and fees against the reward’s likely value. The page also notes that rewards may be reported to tax authorities: Coinbase’s new-user incentive information.
Can staking or lending earn crypto without buying it?
No: these methods generate rewards on assets you already hold or deposit. Coinbase presents staking, USDC rewards, and lending as ways to earn yield, but eligibility depends on jurisdiction and, for staking, the relevant network. Rates can vary, so check the current terms rather than relying on an old advertised rate: Coinbase’s earning options.
Staking can make funds temporarily unavailable. Coinbase says unstaking may take from minutes to weeks depending on the asset; until the process finishes, staked assets may not be sellable or transferable. Coinbase also identifies slashing and validator or network failures as possible sources of loss. Even if rewards accrue, a fall in the market price can reduce the dollar value of both your principal and rewards. Review the asset-specific risks and availability before committing funds: Coinbase’s staking help page.

Are faucets and task-reward sites worth trying?
Faucets and sites offering small crypto payments for tasks may advertise easy rewards, but a displayed balance is not proof that a payout is withdrawable. Binance’s security guide warns about sites promising crypto for simple activities such as clicking ads. The available official information does not establish reliable payout rates or withdrawal conditions for a particular faucet, so treat such offers with caution rather than counting on them as income: Binance’s guide to identifying and avoiding crypto scams.
How to compare an offer before you take it
Look beyond the headline reward. Compare what the offer asks of you with what you can actually receive and access:
- Upfront cost: Does participation require a purchase, deposit, or other payment?
- Eligibility: Are there identity checks, account rules, age conditions, or geographic restrictions?
- Effort and allocation: Is there a quiz or other task? Is the reward capped, first-come, or subject to an expiry?
- Payout: Is the reward a voucher or a transferable asset? What are the withdrawal, conversion, and fee conditions?
- Exposure: Must you hold, stake, or lend assets? Could lockups, market moves, or platform and network risks outweigh the reward?
- Tax: What records should you keep, and what rules apply where you live?
How to avoid crypto reward scams
Do not send cryptocurrency to claim a giveaway or unlock a promised reward. Coinbase says it does not engage in giveaways and will not ask users to send crypto to external addresses. Treat requests for an “unlock,” “verification,” or “withdrawal” fee paid in crypto as a reason to stop. Verify the offer through the service’s official website or app rather than a link sent in a message: Coinbase’s scam-avoidance guidance.

Tax rules depend on your jurisdiction and the type of reward. The IRS digital-assets page is a U.S. starting point and links to current guidance, including a 2026 Tax Court memorandum concerning staking rewards; it does not establish one rule for every reward type or taxpayer. Keep records of rewards received and any later sale, exchange, or other disposition, then consult current guidance from your tax authority or a qualified tax professional.
