To download your Social Security Statement, sign in to your personal my Social Security account, open your Statement, and use the available option to save or download the PDF. You can keep it digitally or print it. If you prefer a paper copy by mail, request one using Form SSA-7004.
Download your Statement from your my Social Security account
- Go to the Social Security Administration’s website and sign in to your personal my Social Security account. The SSA currently lists Login.gov and ID.me as sign-in options. It describes Login.gov as best for most users in the United States and ID.me as an option for users inside or outside the United States. The available options and on-screen wording may change.
- Open your Social Security Statement in the account. Make sure you have selected the Statement, rather than a tax form or another document.
- Use the available download or save option to keep the Statement as a PDF. The SSA says account holders can print, save, or download their personalized Statement PDF. The precise interface labels may change.
- Choose a location on your device where you can find the file again, and check that the PDF has saved successfully. Printing is optional; it is not required to keep a digital copy.
In an October 5, 2021, SSA blog post, Darlynda Bogle described the account as a place where users can “print, save, or download” their Statement PDF to check their earnings record and personalized benefit estimates. The SSA’s current Statement guidance continues to identify the Statement as an account service.

Choose online access or a mailed paper Statement
Online access is the direct route if you want a digital PDF. If you prefer paper or cannot use the online account, the SSA provides a mail-request option.

Request a paper copy by mail
- Get Form SSA-7004, the request form for a Social Security Statement.
- Complete the form and mail it to the address printed on that form.
- Allow four to six weeks for the paper Statement to arrive, as stated in the SSA’s Form SSA-7004 instructions.
The SSA also says it mails Statements three months before the birthday of workers age 60 and older who do not have an online account. This is a scheduled mailing for that group, separate from requesting a paper copy with Form SSA-7004.

Check the earnings record and benefit estimates
Your Statement includes current earnings information and your earnings history, as well as personalized estimates for retirement, disability, and survivors benefits. The Social Security Administration encourages people to review their Statement annually.
When you review it, check that the earnings history matches your records. If you find an error, follow the SSA’s instructions for reporting it; earnings information is used in calculating benefits, so an incorrect record is worth addressing.

Make sure you have the right Social Security document
A Social Security Statement is not the same as an SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. The Statement shows your earnings information and personalized benefit estimates. The SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are tax forms for people who received Social Security benefits, reporting benefits paid in the previous year. Instructions for downloading those forms apply to the tax forms, not to the Social Security Statement.

If your goal is to check your earnings record or benefit estimates, look for the Social Security Statement in your my Social Security account. If you need tax reporting information about benefits received, you are looking for the separate SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S.
