To document the source of funds for a crypto exchange deposit, connect the money or crypto to its original source and show the records tracing it into the account or wallet that sent it to the exchange. The right evidence depends on how you obtained the funds and on the exchange’s request, account region, and upload instructions.
What the exchange means by “source of funds”
Source of funds (SoF) explains where the money or cryptocurrency used in a particular transaction came from. Source of wealth (SoW) is broader: it explains how you accumulated your overall assets. An exchange may ask about either or both. Kraken describes the distinction in its SoF and SoW guidance, while Binance describes SoF in terms of the origin of a specific deposit in its source-of-funds guidance.
For a SoF request, identify the particular deposit the exchange is reviewing, then assemble a traceable record of its origin and movement. A payslip may show that you earned the money; it may not show that the salary reached your bank account or that you transferred those funds to the exchange. Those links may require separate records.
Match documents to the deposit’s actual origin
Use the closest available primary records for the source, receipt, and transfer. These are examples, not guarantees of acceptance: exchanges can request different documents, formats, or additional evidence.

| Deposit origin | Records to consider | What the records should connect |
|---|---|---|
| Salary deposited to a bank account | Bank statement showing relevant salary deposits and the exchange transfer; payslip, employer letter, or tax record if needed to establish earnings. | Employment income to the bank balance, then the transfer to the exchange. Coinbase lists payslips and bank statements among its source-of-funds examples. Kraken notes that one statement may sometimes show both earnings and transfers. |
| Savings or investments | Recent savings, investment, or retirement account statement, plus the transfer record. | The account holding the funds to the transfer that funded the exchange. Coinbase includes these account statements in its examples. |
| Crypto bought on another exchange | Sending exchange statement or transaction receipt, withdrawal record, destination deposit record, and account identity information. | Your identity on the sending account, the crypto withdrawal, and the corresponding receipt or deposit. |
| Crypto held in a self-hosted wallet | Wallet statement or export, or transaction history showing dates, amounts, transaction types, and addresses where available; identity or ownership evidence where available. | The wallet activity and your connection to the wallet. Coinbase describes wallet records and says external wallet statements should include an identifier such as a name or email. |
| Crypto trading or sale | Exchange transaction history or sale receipt; bank record if there were fiat proceeds; tax records where relevant. | The sale or trading activity, any receipt of proceeds, and the funds later sent to the exchange. Preserve records back to the crypto’s original acquisition if requested. |
| Property or another asset sale | Signed sale contract or settlement statement, plus a bank statement showing receipt of proceeds and the later transfer. | The asset sale, receipt of proceeds, and movement of those proceeds. Binance gives asset-sale documentation and evidence of proceeds as examples. |
| Gift, inheritance, loan, or tax refund | For a gift, a gift letter or affidavit and receipt record; for inheritance, legal inheritance records and receipt record; for a loan, a loan agreement and incoming-funds record; for a refund, tax records and bank receipt. | The reason funds came to you, receipt into your account, and any subsequent transfer. Crypto.com, Kraken, and Binance list examples for some of these sources in their respective guidance. |
For crypto already held in an exchange account, a withdrawal record may show the transfer but not how you obtained the crypto. Kraken’s guidance may call for evidence of how funds were earned as well as proof of receipt; Bitpanda’s origin-of-funds guidance also discusses origins and transaction history in relevant crypto cases.
Assemble a clear evidence trail
- Identify the exact request. Note the deposit’s date, amount, currency, and source category, and check what the exchange asks you to establish.
- Start with the origin record. Choose the record closest to how the funds were earned or acquired: for example, a payslip, investment statement, sale contract, tax record, loan agreement, inheritance document, exchange statement, or wallet history.
- Show receipt into the account or wallet. Add the bank statement or wallet record showing where the funds arrived, when applicable.
- Show the transfer to the exchange. Include the outgoing bank transfer or crypto deposit/withdrawal record. For crypto, include transaction hashes and wallet addresses when requested, along with records that identify you or connect you to the sending exchange account or wallet.
- Check the chain for gaps. Compare names, dates, amounts, and account or wallet identifiers across the records. If no single record shows the full trail, attach a short, factual cover note explaining how the documents connect; do not claim more than they establish.
- Submit through the instructed channel. Follow the exchange’s authenticated or secure upload instructions. Coinbase says its documents are submitted through a secure portal; for any other platform, use the channel specified in its request.
- Keep your own copies. Retain the submitted files and the exchange’s request so you can refer to the same records if asked for clarification.
Check the exchange’s rules before submitting
Do not assume that a document accepted by one exchange will satisfy another. The exchanges’ public examples differ, and requested document age, accepted formats, and upload methods can depend on the record type, account region, and review. Coinbase’s examples use different time windows for different documents, and its page describes a Brazil-specific process; there is no single freshness rule that applies to every platform or account.

- Read the exact request and current instructions for your account, including any region-specific requirements.
- Check which period the statement or transaction history must cover and which identifiers must appear.
- Use the requested file format and upload route. If a detail is unclear, ask the exchange rather than assuming.
- Do not fabricate, alter, or obscure a record in a way that changes its meaning. The reviewed exchange guidance does not establish a universal rule for redacting private information, so check the platform’s instructions before redacting anything.
Submitting a coherent set of records does not guarantee approval. The exchange decides whether the evidence meets its review requirements.
