Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a U.S. check deposit, the current large-deposit threshold is $6,725. A deposit above that amount may receive staged availability rather than an immediate full credit. The safest approach is to ask your bank for its exact schedule before depositing, use the channel and cutoff it specifies, keep the receipt, and do not commit money until each portion is shown as available.
Under CFPB consumer guidance, $225 is generally available the next business day, amounts up to $6,725 within two business days, and the amount above $6,725 generally within seven business days. Those are general rules, not a promise for a particular check. New accounts, certain ATM deposits, repeated overdrafts, suspected fraud or uncollectibility, emergencies, and other exceptions can extend a hold.

What counts as a large check in 2026?
The threshold used for the large-deposit exception is $6,725. The CFPB’s threshold-adjustment rule, dated May 13, 2024, made that figure effective July 1, 2025, for five years. A check above the threshold is not automatically placed on hold, but the bank may make the funds available in stages or apply an exception hold.

| Figure or rule | What it means | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| $6,725 | Large-deposit threshold | Effective July 1, 2025, for five years under the CFPB adjustment. |
| $225 | Amount the CFPB consumer explanation says is generally available the next business day | The CFPB consumer page listed this guidance on August 28, 2026; a particular account or exception can differ. |
| $275 | Adjusted minimum amount of certain check deposits that must be available the next business day | Listed in the CFPB’s 2024 rule summary. It conflicts with the $225 wording on the consumer page, so verify the bank’s current disclosure. |
| Up to $6,725 | Generally available within two business days for a local check | General CFPB schedule, subject to deposit type, channel, cutoff and exceptions. |
| Above $6,725 | Generally available within seven business days | The excess portion can be delayed; the bank should tell you the applicable dates when a hold is imposed. |
The conflicting $225 and $275 figures should not be silently combined. Ask the bank which current Regulation CC schedule it applies to your account and request the answer in writing or in the funds-availability disclosure.

Call the bank before you deposit
If a specific date matters, contact the bank before presenting the check. A general online estimate cannot account for your account age, prior overdrafts, the check’s category, the delivery channel or a bank-specific exception.
Questions to ask
- Is a teller, the bank’s own ATM or the mobile app the correct channel for this check?
- What is the cutoff time for that channel, and how will a deposit after the cutoff be dated?
- Does the bank require a special deposit slip, endorsement, envelope or other procedure for this item?
- Will the check be treated as a local check, an official check or another category under the account agreement?
- What amount will be available on each date, and when will the bank send a written exception notice if it extends the hold?
- Are there account-specific restrictions because the account is new or has had repeated overdrafts?
The bank’s answer is the only reliable way to obtain a date for your particular deposit. No deposit method can guarantee that a lawful hold will be waived.
Choose the deposit channel deliberately
There is no universal ranking in which one channel is always faster. Compare the options against your bank’s own policy and the certainty you need.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Channel | What to confirm | Why it can matter |
|---|---|---|
| Staffed teller | Whether the branch accepts the amount and check category, and the branch’s cutoff | You can ask questions and request the stated availability dates while the deposit is being accepted. |
| The bank’s own ATM | ATM cutoff, receipt details and whether the machine accepts this check type | ATM deposits can have different treatment, and certain ATM deposits are among the circumstances that may permit a longer hold. |
| Another institution’s ATM | Whether your bank credits deposits made there and what date it uses | The receiving institution and your bank may have different rules; confirm before using this route. |
| Mobile app | Mobile-deposit cutoff, image and endorsement requirements, and the app’s posted availability date | CFPB guidance notes that mobile deposits may follow a different timetable under the bank’s policy. |
For an unusually large or time-sensitive check, a teller appointment can make it easier to identify a required process and obtain a written receipt. That is a planning choice, not a guarantee of faster collection.

Prepare the check and deposit information
Use the bank’s instructions exactly. Confirm that the payee name matches the account owner or that the bank has approved any variation, and ask how the item must be endorsed. Do not alter the check or add information the bank has not requested.
Have your account information and identification available if the bank requires them. If the bank tells you to use a special deposit slip or official-check procedure, follow that instruction rather than improvising. The FDIC examination manual recognizes special procedures for some official checks, so a cashier’s, certified or government check should not automatically be treated like an ordinary personal check.
Safe deposit procedure
- Verify the plan. Before leaving home, confirm the selected channel, cutoff, business-day definition and expected availability schedule with the bank.
- Check the item. Make sure the payee, amount and date appear correct and that the item is acceptable under the account agreement. Ask the bank about any unusual feature instead of guessing.
- Follow endorsement instructions. Endorse only as the bank directs. If mobile deposit requires a restrictive endorsement or a notation, use the exact wording in the app’s instructions.
- Submit before the cutoff. A deposit made after the applicable cutoff may be treated as received on the next business day. Keep the check and deposit materials together until the bank confirms acceptance.
- Read the receipt or confirmation. Record the accepted date, channel, amount and any availability dates shown. A receipt documents the transaction; it does not prevent a later exception hold.
- Save evidence. Keep the paper receipt, ATM printout or mobile confirmation and a copy or image of the check if the bank permits it. Do not destroy the original until the bank’s instructions say it is safe.
- Monitor the account. Check the available balance and any hold notice. Treat the funds as restricted until the bank shows the relevant amount as available.
How the normal availability schedule works
The consumer-facing CFPB schedule separates the first portion of a deposit from the rest. For a local check, the guidance says $225 is generally available the next business day, the amount up to $6,725 generally within two business days, and the amount above $6,725 generally within seven business days. “Generally” matters: the schedule can change with the check type, account history, deposit location, cutoff and an exception.
| Deposit portion | Typical CFPB consumer-guidance timing | What can change it |
|---|---|---|
| First $225 | Next business day | The newer rule summary lists a $275 adjusted minimum for certain deposits; confirm the amount in the bank’s current disclosure. |
| Next portion, up to a total of $6,725 | Generally within two business days for a local check | Nonlocal treatment, channel rules, weekends, holidays and exceptions. |
| Amount over $6,725 | Generally within seven business days | A permitted exception hold can delay funds further, with notice and a stated availability date. |
The schedule describes when your bank must make funds available under ordinary circumstances. It does not mean the check has completed every step of collection or that the paying bank can never return it.

Cutoff times and business days
Timing at the moment of deposit can change the starting date. CFPB guidance says a cutoff cannot be earlier than 2:00 p.m. at a physical location or noon at an ATM and elsewhere. A bank may set a later cutoff, and mobile deposits can have a separate one. A deposit after the bank’s cutoff may be treated as received on the next business day.
Business days are determined by the institution’s policy; weekends and federal holidays generally do not count as business days for this schedule. Ask how the bank treats a deposit made late on Friday, on a holiday eve or through a mobile app. The date printed on an ATM or app confirmation may be different from the date used for funds availability if the submission missed the applicable cutoff.
Why a bank may extend the hold
A longer hold is not necessarily an error. CFPB and FDIC materials identify several circumstances in which the bank may delay availability.
| Possible reason | What to do |
|---|---|
| Deposit exceeds $6,725 | Ask how much is available in each stage and the date for the excess. |
| New account | Ask when the account’s new-account period ends and which schedule applies meanwhile. |
| Repeated overdrafts | Request the specific account condition and the bank’s written availability date. |
| Certain ATM deposits | Ask whether using a teller or another approved channel changes the standard treatment; do not assume it does. |
| Suspected fraud or uncollectibility | Ask what documentation or verification the bank needs and when it expects to release or return the item. |
| Emergency conditions | Obtain the revised availability date and keep the notice with your deposit records. |
| Check category or special procedure | Confirm whether the item is a government, cashier’s, certified or same-bank check and whether special handling applies. |
A bank should provide an exception notice or other explanation when the law requires one. If the notice does not state the amount and date you need, ask customer service or the branch to clarify those details.

Check type affects the analysis
Do not assume that a check labeled “official” is automatically available immediately. Eligible government, cashier’s, certified and same-bank checks may receive different treatment when the deposit meets the bank’s conditions. The exact definition, identification requirements and deposit channel are controlled by the account agreement and the bank’s procedures.
A personal or local check is commonly evaluated under the ordinary schedule, but the bank can still apply a large-deposit or other exception. A check drawn on the same bank may be easier for the bank to verify, yet that fact alone does not promise immediate availability. Ask the bank to classify the item before depositing if the timing is important.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Available funds are not the same as collected funds
“Available” means the bank permits you to use the money under its funds-availability policy. “Collected” describes the underlying clearing process. The OCC explains that a check moves from the depositary bank through a Federal Reserve Bank or clearinghouse to the paying bank. A balance can therefore be available to you before every collection step is complete.
For that reason, do not treat an available balance as a guarantee that the check is good or irreversible. Keep enough of your own funds to cover scheduled payments, and avoid transferring or spending the entire check amount until the bank’s status and your risk tolerance justify it.

What to do when you need the money by a certain date
Tell the bank the date before depositing and ask for the amount available on each business day. If the answer does not meet your deadline, ask whether another permitted channel or an earlier deposit date changes the schedule. Do not pressure a teller to promise an exception; staff cannot waive a hold that the law or account agreement permits.
Plan payments around the staged amounts, not the total face value. If the bank says only part will be available, leave the restricted portion untouched. Keep written evidence of the bank’s stated dates so you can identify a missed cutoff or an incorrect posting without relying on memory.
Troubleshooting a delayed or unexpected hold
The deposit is not showing
Check whether you missed the channel’s cutoff, whether the confirmation says “pending,” and whether the deposit was submitted to the correct account. Contact the bank with the confirmation number and accepted date.
The available amount is lower than expected
Ask whether the bank applied the $6,725 large-deposit rule, a new-account rule, an ATM or mobile timetable, or another exception. Request the exact amount available now and each future release date.
The bank says the check may not be collectible
Ask what verification is pending and whether the item will be returned. Do not redeposit or spend against it unless the bank gives clear instructions. Preserve the check image, receipt and any communication.
The stated release date passes without access
Call the bank promptly, provide the written notice and ask for the reason, revised date and escalation path. If the explanation remains unclear, request the account’s funds-availability disclosure and the applicable exception notice.
Recordkeeping checklist
- Photograph or copy the check if permitted.
- Keep the teller, ATM or mobile receipt.
- Write down the accepted date, cutoff and stated release dates.
- Save every hold or exception notice.
- Track which amount is available rather than relying on the ledger balance alone.
- Retain the bank’s instructions for official or mobile deposits until the item is fully resolved.
The practical answer
Deposit the check through the channel your bank approves, before its cutoff, and obtain the bank’s staged availability dates in writing. For a U.S. check above $6,725, expect that the bank may delay the excess and may apply a longer exception hold. The CFPB’s consumer page currently describes a $225 next-business-day amount, while the 2024 adjustment rule lists a $275 minimum for certain deposits; your bank’s current disclosure determines what applies to your account. Keep the receipt, watch the available balance and do not spend money merely because the deposit appears in the account.
