A warehouse-club membership is worth paying for only if savings on purchases your household would make anyway, plus benefits you will actually use, outweigh the annual fee and extra costs such as travel, storage, and wasted food. The answer depends on your local prices and habits—not simply how many people live in your home.
Use this calculation: Net annual value = comparable savings on planned purchases + usable rewards and benefits − annual fee − incremental travel and waste costs. Compare unit prices for items of equivalent size and quality, and count only the amount you realistically expect to use.

Start with the annual fee and your real shopping pattern
Before comparing deals, check the current signup or renewal price and terms. Official U.S. listings accessed October 4, 2026 showed these standard annual fees; prices can change, and tax or temporary promotions may affect what you pay.

Build a short list of repeat purchases—such as household staples, pantry goods, or fuel—and compare the club price with the store or station you would otherwise use. A lower shelf price is not a saving if you would not have bought the product, or if part of a bulk pack expires before you use it.

Make a household-specific break-even estimate
Use a worksheet like this. Fill it with your own local prices and realistic quantities over a year; do not treat an advertised discount or a published basket as a forecast for your household.
| Input | What to record |
|---|---|
| Membership fee | Standard annual price you expect to pay at signup or renewal. |
| Planned repeat purchases | Items you already buy, realistic annual quantities, and the club’s unit price versus your usual alternative. |
| Fuel | Gallons you would actually buy at the club multiplied by the price difference against a convenient station on your usual route. |
| Usable benefits and rewards | Dollar value of benefits you expect to use, after accounting for eligibility, exclusions, thresholds, and fees. |
| Extra costs | Additional driving, travel time if you assign it a value, storage constraints, and products likely to spoil or go unused. |
For each product, compare equivalent units—such as price per ounce, pound, or item—and account for brand preference, quality, and taxes where relevant. Include delivery costs if you would use delivery. Subtract the annual fee and extra costs from the savings and benefits total. If the result is negative or only slightly positive, the membership may not be worthwhile given uncertainty in future prices and use.

Count rewards only when the math and rules work
A higher tier can make sense when its incremental reward on eligible spending exceeds the extra fee. Costco’s U.S. page lists Executive at $130 per year and Gold Star at $65 per year, a $65 fee difference; Costco’s membership FAQ describes a 2% reward on qualified purchases. At that rate, $65 ÷ 0.02 = $3,250 in qualified annual spending to equal the added fee. This is a break-even calculation, not a guarantee of net savings: excluded purchases, reward rules or caps, and whether you can use the reward affect the result. Check the Costco membership FAQ for current conditions.
Other higher-tier benefits need the same scrutiny. Sam’s Club lists 2% Sam’s Cash for Plus, alongside additional shipping, delivery, pharmacy, optical, and tire and battery benefits; the Club tier also lists member-only fuel prices and Scan & Go. BJ’s says Club+ earns 2% on eligible purchases, with exclusions, and offers 5 cents per gallon off BJ’s gas. Check each club’s official terms for current eligibility, thresholds, availability, exclusions, and service fees before assigning a dollar value: Sam’s Club membership details and BJ’s tier details.

Factor in fuel, location, and the cost of bulk buying
Fuel savings depend on how many gallons you would buy there and the actual price difference from your normal convenient station. Kiplinger reported a potential warehouse-club advantage of 5–25 cents per gallon compared with local averages in March 2026; that is a broad estimate, not a promise about a particular station or date. Check nearby pump prices, and count the savings only if the club is on a route you already take or the fuel difference outweighs the added trip. See Kiplinger’s fuel comparison.
Bulk packs can cost more in practice if you lack room to store them or cannot consume them before they spoil or expire. Kristin McGrath, an editor and shopping expert at Offers.com, warned against letting stocking-up impulses turn into wasted money and product in Kiplinger’s discussion of warehouse-club purchases. Estimate waste honestly rather than assuming every package will be used.

- Red Basket Not Included
- Metal Shopping cart
- Mini grocery shopping cart
Household size alone does not settle the question. A larger household may use more bulk goods, but a smaller household can still benefit from a few durable staples, while a larger one may lose money on perishables, inconvenient locations, or unused services. Local basket comparisons also vary: AARP’s September 3, 2026 comparison of 28 grocery items found Sam’s Club lowest among the compared clubs, BJ’s close behind, and Costco third. That result describes one basket, not a universal ranking or your local prices. Read AARP’s comparison.
Compare nearby clubs on the same criteria
There is no one-size-fits-all winner. Use the same repeat-purchase basket and the same assumptions for each club you could realistically visit.

- Fit Costco carts with 4 holes for twins.
- You can also use it on baby high chair.
- Roll itself into attached carrying bag.
- Material:Cotton & Polyester.
- Washing: Machine washable.
- Fees: Compare the standard annual fee and renewal terms, not just a promotional first-year price.
- Basket prices: Price the same sizes, quality, and brands you would buy otherwise; calculate unit prices and realistic annual quantities.
- Location and travel: Include the trip’s added cost and time. BJ’s FY2025 SEC filing says its stores are concentrated primarily in the eastern half of the United States, so availability and proximity can narrow the practical choices. BJ’s FY2025 filing.
- Fuel: Compare current nearby prices and include only gallons you would buy without making an uneconomic special trip.
- Rewards and services: Check rates, exclusions, eligibility, service fees, and whether the listed benefits match your actual needs.
- Bulk practicality: Consider storage space and whether the household will use each package before spoilage or expiration.
Published savings claims need context. BJ’s FY2025 filing says its representative basket of manufacturer-branded groceries can offer up to 25% savings versus traditional supermarkets; that is the company’s qualified statement about its basket, not an independent finding or a promised household saving. See the filing. Your own local comparison is more useful for this decision.
Review actual results before renewing
- Track a representative period. Save receipts and note which purchases replaced items you would have bought elsewhere, what went unused, and which benefits you actually redeemed.
- Recalculate net value. Use observed quantities and prices, subtract the fee and added travel or waste costs, and avoid counting theoretical benefits.
- Choose a tier—or no membership. Renew, downgrade, upgrade, or cancel according to the result and expected changes in your household’s routine.
Costco says its double guarantee applies to all membership levels and includes a refund of membership cost, subject to limitations. Check the applicable terms directly before relying on a refund: Costco’s membership guarantee information.
