You can open a PayPal Business account online by creating a login and providing your business and tax information. You do not need an LLC: PayPal lets sole proprietors apply using their own name and an SSN instead of an EIN. After signup, confirm your email and link and confirm a bank account or card. PayPal may request additional information to verify your identity or business.
Before you start
PayPal’s U.S. signup flow asks for account, business, and tax details. Gather the information that applies to your business structure before you begin:
- Your legal name and email address
- A password for your PayPal login
- Your business name and a description of what the business does
- An SSN or tax ID, as applicable
- Business bank-account details or a card to link after signup
The precise requirements depend on your business type. PayPal’s U.S. Business-account signup page describes the online signup process and sole-proprietor option.
How to create the account
- Open PayPal’s U.S. Business-account signup page. Select the sign-up option and create your login with an email address and password.
- Enter your business and tax information. Provide the requested legal name, business details, tax information, and other fields shown in the signup flow. Answer based on your actual business structure.
- Complete any verification requests. PayPal may ask for additional details or documents depending on your business type and whether it can verify the information you submitted.
- Confirm your email address. Follow the confirmation instructions sent to the email you used to sign up.
- Link and confirm a bank account or card. PayPal describes confirming a linked financial account as a way to verify ownership of the financial details on your account.
- Set up the tools you need. PayPal identifies invoicing, online payments, connecting an online store, and other business tools as possible next steps.
PayPal explains its business-account information requirements; fields vary with the type of business.

Choose the business structure that matches your situation
Sole proprietor
You do not have to form an LLC or another formal entity to open the account. PayPal says a sole proprietor can use their own name as the business name and provide an SSN instead of an EIN. Enter information that accurately reflects how your business is organized.
Registered business
For a registered business, PayPal’s verification list includes the business’s legal name, address, structure, country of incorporation, EIN, business email, and industry category. It may also request details about an executive contact and owners with at least 25% ownership. These are verification details, and which ones apply can depend on the business type.

What PayPal may ask you to verify
For an individual or sole proprietor, PayPal lists details such as legal name, physical home address, date of birth, SSN or ITIN, email, business structure, and industry category. Some fields are optional or conditional; for example, a website may be requested if you sell online.
If PayPal cannot verify your personal information or business through its national-database check, it may ask you to submit documents. Examples include a government photo ID, proof of physical address, or government or business records. Follow the instructions for the specific document requested and ensure names match the account or business information as required. See PayPal’s business-entity document guidance.

Business account or Personal account?
PayPal recommends Personal accounts for shopping, personal payments, gifts, and casual selling. It positions Business accounts for people operating under a company or group name and accepting card and bank payments. PayPal says a Business account can provide limited access to up to 200 employees, according to PayPal’s 2026 account guidance.
If you already have a Personal account, PayPal says you can typically upgrade it through account settings. You’ll be asked for business information, and your account history is retained. PayPal’s account signup guidance covers both opening a new account and upgrading.
