How to Create a my Social Security Account and Review Your Earnings Record

A step-by-step guide to creating a my Social Security account, checking your annual earnings history, and correcting missing or inaccurate entries.

You can create a free my Social Security account at SSA’s my Social Security page, sign in through Login.gov or ID.me, and open your Social Security Statement to see your earnings by year. You must be at least 18 and have a valid email address. If a year is missing or an amount looks wrong, use SSA’s online correction option when it is offered for your record; otherwise contact a Social Security office with supporting documents.

The former Social Security username-and-password sign-in no longer works for online services. Login.gov and ID.me became the only online sign-in choices on June 7, 2025. The steps below reflect that current process and explain what the online record can—and cannot—show.

What a my Social Security account lets you do

Your account provides secure access to the Social Security Statement, including the yearly earnings history SSA uses when calculating retirement and disability benefits. SSA encourages people to review the Statement every year because an incorrect earnings record can affect benefit estimates and, in some cases, program eligibility.

The account is not the same as ordering a certified earnings statement. The online Statement is free and is designed for a basic year-by-year check. It does not display employer names or other employer information. If you need certified totals or a detailed itemized history, you must use a separate SSA-7050 request and pay the applicable fee.

Choose the current sign-in method

SSA now accepts two identity-provider accounts:

Choice Who SSA says it suits Materials SSA lists Important qualification
Login.gov Most users in the United States Email address, government-issued photo ID, and a phone number These are the items in SSA’s comparison, not a guarantee that every identity-proofing case will be identical.
ID.me People inside or outside the United States Email address, government-issued photo ID, and a device with a camera SSA’s account FAQ says ID.me is required for customers with a foreign mailing address. Follow the provider’s current instructions if it requests additional steps.

If you already have a Login.gov or ID.me credential, you can use it to reach your existing my Social Security account. If you do not, select one provider and create an account there first. Your provider performs the identity verification; SSA then redirects you to its terms before you use the account.

For most people in the United States, SSA describes Login.gov as the choice suited to most users. ID.me is an option for people in the U.S. or abroad, and SSA says it is required for customers with a foreign mailing address. The useful comparison is not simply which brand you recognize: consider whether you already have a credential, where you live or receive mail, and which listed verification materials you can use. Either way, the selected provider’s current instructions determine the exact identity-proofing steps.

What to have ready before you begin

  • Be at least 18 years old. SSA states, “You must be 18 years or older and have a valid email address to create an account.”
  • Use an email inbox you can access during registration. The provider will use it for account messages and sign-in.
  • Have the identity-verification materials for your selected provider nearby: a government-issued photo ID, plus a phone for Login.gov or a camera-equipped device for ID.me, according to SSA’s comparison.
  • Use an internet-connected phone, tablet, or computer. A camera may be needed if ID.me asks you to capture identity documents or a selfie.
  • Allow roughly 5–20 minutes for the one-time provider registration and verification task. That is SSA’s estimate, not a guaranteed completion time; an additional review or a request for more information can take longer.

That 5–20 minute estimate covers the one-time registration and verification task described by SSA. It is a planning estimate, not a promise that every person will finish in that window. Allow extra time if the provider asks for another step or if you need to locate a document. Have access to the email account you intend to use before starting so you can complete any confirmation step without switching inboxes midway.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to create the account step by step

  1. Open SSA’s official starting point. Go directly to ssa.gov/myaccount rather than following an unsolicited email or text link.
  2. Select the sign-in provider. Choose Login.gov or ID.me. If you already have one of those credentials, select the matching option and sign in. Otherwise, choose the provider’s option to create an account.
  3. Register with the provider. Enter your email address, create the provider password, and complete any email-confirmation step. Keep the provider’s recovery information in a secure place.
  4. Complete identity verification. Follow the provider’s current prompts. You may be asked for a government-issued photo ID, a phone number, a camera, or additional information. The provider—not SSA—handles this identity-proofing stage.
  5. Return to SSA. After verification, you are redirected to SSA’s terms and conditions. Read and accept them to continue to my Social Security.
  6. Confirm that the account opens. Once the account dashboard appears, sign out and back in once if necessary so you know which provider and email address are associated with your access.

If the provider cannot verify you immediately, do not create multiple accounts with different email addresses. Use that provider’s support instructions first; duplicate registrations can make it harder to identify which credential is active.

Identity verification is part of protecting access to personal Social Security information. If a prompt does not match what you can provide, use the provider’s help or recovery process rather than guessing at answers or submitting information you cannot verify. SSA’s comparison is a guide to the usual materials to have available, not a guarantee that every person will see precisely the same prompts.

If you already have an account

Start at the same SSA account page and choose Login.gov or ID.me. The old Social Security username-and-password option was discontinued; it is not a third sign-in route. Use the provider account that is linked to your SSA access, then follow the on-screen path to your Statement.

Login.gov and ID.me control their own passwords, multifactor prompts, and identity-proofing. If you cannot complete one of those steps, contact the provider rather than repeatedly trying unrelated SSA credentials. SSA can still help with electronic-access problems such as blocking or unblocking access or deactivating an account, but it cannot reset a provider’s password for you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you have both provider accounts, use the one already associated with your my Social Security access. A credential that works for another service does not necessarily resolve a problem with the provider account linked to SSA. Start from SSA’s account page so the sign-in process takes you back to the official service, and use the provider’s own recovery support if you cannot get past its sign-in or verification screen.

How to check your Social Security earnings record

Open the yearly earnings history

  1. Sign in to my Social Security through Login.gov or ID.me.
  2. Open your Social Security Statement.
  3. Find the earnings history or yearly earnings section. Review each displayed year, paying particular attention to the most recent year and any year in which you changed jobs, became self-employed, or had multiple employers.
  4. Compare the displayed amounts with your own W-2s, filed tax returns, and self-employment records. Check both the year and the amount; a payment received in one calendar year can belong to a different wage-reporting year.
  5. Save or print your personal review notes. The online Statement is useful for checking totals, but it does not identify the employer that reported each amount.

Employers report annual earnings to SSA. People who work for themselves report their earnings directly, generally through their tax filings. SSA uses those reported amounts in its benefit calculations. The agency’s guidance puts the reason plainly: “We calculate your monthly retirement and disability benefit by looking at how much you’ve earned, so it’s important to make sure your record is accurate.”

How to compare the Statement with your own records

Review the history one year at a time rather than relying only on the current benefit estimate. For a year when you were an employee, compare the listed total with the wage information on your W-2s and other records you kept. If you had more than one employer, consider the combined earnings for that year; the online Statement does not break the total out by employer. For self-employment, compare the year’s entry with the relevant tax records. If you find a difference, note the year, the amount shown by SSA, and the amount your records support before deciding how to contact SSA.

A blank or unexpected entry deserves a closer look, but a difference is not by itself proof of what caused it. Check that you are comparing the same year and the same type of earnings, and consider whether the recent year has had time to appear in SSA’s record. If the mismatch remains after checking your documents, follow the correction process rather than assuming the online total will change automatically.

When to check

SSA encourages annual Statement reviews and specifically recommends checking the previous year’s earnings in August. Treat August as a practical checkpoint, not a promise that every person’s record will be updated by a particular day. Reporting, processing, or a correction can delay when an amount appears.

Checking annually also makes it easier to identify which year needs attention while you can still locate tax returns, W-2s, or related records. August is especially useful for the prior-year check, but it is not a reason to skip the rest of your history or to assume that a number is final on a set date.

What the free online Statement includes

  • Year-by-year earnings amounts in the history SSA has associated with your record.
  • Benefit estimates that depend on the earnings information SSA has processed.
  • No employer names or employer-by-employer detail.
  • No certification that a total is suitable for a court, lender, immigration matter, or another organization that requires certified evidence.

The Statement is a convenient way to inspect the yearly totals and related estimates; it is not an itemized employment history. If you need to know which employer appears in a detailed record, or need SSA to certify the figures, the free online view may not meet the organization’s requirements. Confirm what the requesting organization needs before paying for a separate record.

What to do if your earnings are wrong

First identify the type of problem: an amount that does not match your records, a year with no earnings when you worked, earnings that belong to someone else, or self-employment income that was reported incorrectly. The route SSA offers can differ by person and by discrepancy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gather the information that will help explain the issue before you start: the year or years involved, the amount displayed, the amount you believe is correct, and the documents you have to support that view. SSA’s record is based on employer reports or self-employment reporting, so the records you bring should relate to the year and type of earnings in question. Keep your explanation factual and specific; do not report an amount simply because it seems more likely.

Use online correction when SSA offers it

For some records, SSA provides an online correction path. After signing in:

  1. Under Eligibility and Earnings, select Review your full earnings record now.
  2. Review the complete history and identify the year or entry you believe is wrong.
  3. If the option appears, choose Request a correction online.
  4. Describe the discrepancy accurately and submit the information requested by SSA.
  5. Keep copies of what you submitted and any confirmation number or message shown at the end.

Not every user is eligible for this online route, and the presence of a button does not guarantee that SSA will change the record. Provide only information you can support; an inaccurate correction request can create a new problem in the file.

The online option is a route for submitting a request, not an instant edit to the earnings history. Follow the questions displayed for your record, answer them carefully, and retain the confirmation so you can refer to the request if you later contact SSA. If the correction link is unavailable, do not assume that you have no way to ask for a review; SSA directs people who cannot use the online route to contact a local office.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Contact or visit a Social Security office when online correction is unavailable

If you cannot use the online request, follow SSA’s earnings-record guidance and contact a local office. SSA may ask you to complete Form SSA-7008 and provide supporting documentation. In the situation described in its guidance, SSA recommends bringing copies of filed tax returns for the years in question. You can also organize W-2s, self-employment tax schedules, pay records, or other documents that show what was reported, while recognizing that SSA decides which evidence it can use.

Make copies rather than surrendering your only originals. Write down the exact years and amounts in dispute and explain whether the problem is a missing year, an incorrect amount, or earnings that do not belong to you. Ask the representative how to submit additional evidence if a document is not available at the first contact.

Bring relevant information for each year you are asking SSA to review. Filed tax returns are specifically recommended in the described correction guidance; W-2s and other records may also help you explain what you believe is missing or inaccurate. If you do not have a particular document, state that clearly and ask what other evidence SSA can consider. The agency determines whether the material is sufficient and what further steps are required.

For earnings that appear to belong to someone else, say that directly and identify the affected year or entry. For missing or underreported earnings, explain what work or self-employment income you believe is absent and show the records you have. Different discrepancies may need different evidence, so avoid assuming that one form or document will resolve every case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume a correction has a fixed turnaround

SSA does not establish one universal correction time in the guidance described here. Processing can depend on the type of discrepancy, the evidence, and whether another agency or employer report must be checked. Monitor your account and keep the submission record until the displayed history and any affected benefit estimate have been reviewed again.

Keep copies of your request and documents, and check the history again after SSA responds or tells you that the review is complete. If the issue remains unclear, contact the office handling it rather than submitting a second request with different information.

When a certified or detailed earnings record is necessary

Use Form SSA-7050 when an organization requires certified yearly totals or a detailed itemized earnings statement rather than the free online view. The Social Security Administration’s fee notice, effective October 1, 2024, listed these amounts:

SSA-7050 request Fee listed in the 2024 notice What it is for
Certified yearly earnings totals $35 A certified statement of yearly totals.
Non-certified detailed earnings statement $61 A detailed itemized statement without certification.
Certified detailed earnings statement $96 A detailed itemized statement with certification.

These fees are dated SSA figures, not permanent prices. Check the live SSA-7050 form page before ordering, because fees can change. Do not pay for this form merely to perform the ordinary annual review; the online Statement is free and generally sufficient for that purpose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the request that matches what the organization actually asks for. Certified yearly totals and a detailed itemized statement are different products, and certification is a separate distinction from the level of detail. If the requester only needs a basic review of your earnings history, start with the free online Statement. If it specifically requires a certified record or employer-level details, check the SSA-7050 options and current fee before submitting a paid request.

Sign-in, verification, and security troubleshooting

Provider password or identity-proofing problem

For a password, multifactor prompt, email-confirmation, or identity-proofing failure, use Login.gov or ID.me support for the provider you selected. SSA does not control those provider credentials. Try the provider’s recovery process before opening another account.

SSA electronic-access problem

SSA says it can help block or unblock electronic access, deactivate an account, and provide phone identity verification for most users. The main number is 1-800-772-1213; TTY users can call 1-800-325-0778. The listed hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

These SSA assistance options are different from changing a Login.gov or ID.me password. If the obstacle is the provider’s sign-in or verification process, begin with that provider. If the problem concerns SSA electronic access itself, or you need phone identity verification, contact SSA using the listed numbers and hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Phishing or impersonation concern

Identity verification protects sensitive account information, so treat unexpected requests seriously. SSA warns about messages that do not come from an official .gov address or that ask for personal information. Type SSA.gov into your browser yourself and navigate to the account page instead of clicking an unsolicited link. Never send a photo of an identity document or a provider password in response to an unverified message.

A practical annual review checklist

  • Sign in through the Login.gov or ID.me account you actually use for SSA.
  • Open the Social Security Statement and review every year, not just the projected benefit amount.
  • Use your W-2s, filed tax returns, and self-employment records to verify amounts.
  • Check the prior year around August, while allowing for reporting and processing delays.
  • Record the exact year and amount for every discrepancy.
  • Use Review your full earnings record now and Request a correction online if those options are available to you.
  • If online correction is unavailable, contact a local SSA office and prepare copies of filed tax returns and other relevant evidence; ask whether Form SSA-7008 is needed.
  • Keep confirmation messages and copies of every document submitted until the record is corrected or SSA explains the result.
  • Order SSA-7050 only when you need certified or detailed information, and verify the current fee before paying.

Why this review matters for future benefits

Retirement and disability calculations depend on the earnings SSA has recorded over your working life. A single missing year or an incorrect amount can change the earnings history used in an estimate. Reviewing the Statement annually gives you a chance to identify a problem while tax records, W-2s, and employer documentation are easier to locate. It also lets you distinguish a normal processing delay from an entry that needs a formal correction.

Accuracy matters for more than a number on the screen: SSA says it uses recorded earnings when calculating monthly retirement and disability benefits, and corrections may affect program eligibility or benefit estimates. A careful review is not a guarantee of a higher benefit or a correction, but it helps ensure that any later calculation is based on the earnings information SSA has on file.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I create a my Social Security account?

Go to SSA’s official my Social Security page, choose Login.gov or ID.me, and either sign in with an existing credential or create one through the selected provider. You must be at least 18 and have a valid email address. Complete the provider’s identity verification, then return to SSA and accept its terms to access the account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I still sign in with my old Social Security username and password?

No. SSA discontinued that sign-in method. Since June 7, 2025, Login.gov and ID.me have been the online sign-in options. Use the credential that is linked to your SSA access.

How do I check my Social Security earnings record?

Sign in to my Social Security and open your Social Security Statement. Review the yearly earnings history and compare the amounts with your W-2s, filed tax returns, or self-employment records. SSA encourages annual reviews and recommends checking the prior year’s earnings in August, while noting that this is not a guarantee that every record is updated by a particular date.

What should I do if my Social Security earnings are wrong?

If SSA offers the option for your record, select “Review your full earnings record now” under Eligibility and Earnings, then choose “Request a correction online.” If that route is not available, contact a local Social Security office. SSA may ask for Form SSA-7008 and supporting documents; its guidance recommends bringing copies of filed tax returns for the years in question in the described case. Keep copies and follow SSA’s instructions.

Does the online Statement show my employers, and is it certified?

No. The free online Statement shows yearly earnings history but does not show employer information, and it is not a certified earnings statement. Form SSA-7050 is a separate paid route for certified yearly totals or a detailed itemized statement. Check the current SSA form page for fees before ordering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much does an SSA-7050 earnings statement cost?

SSA’s fee notice effective October 1, 2024, listed $35 for certified yearly totals, $61 for a non-certified detailed statement, and $96 for a certified detailed statement. Fees can change, so check SSA’s live SSA-7050 page before you place an order.

Who can help if I cannot sign in?

For a Login.gov or ID.me password or identity-verification issue, contact that provider’s support. SSA says it can help block or unblock electronic access, deactivate an account, and provide phone identity verification for most users. Call 1-800-772-1213, or TTY 1-800-325-0778, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Bottom Line

Create or access your account through Login.gov or ID.me, then review the yearly earnings history in your free Social Security Statement at least once a year. Check the previous year around August, compare entries with your records, and use SSA’s online correction route if it is offered for your record. If not, contact a local office with supporting documents. The online Statement is not certified and does not identify employers; check the current SSA-7050 fees if you need a detailed or certified record.
