There is no single way to correct an input tax credit (ITC) mismatch in GST returns. First find whether it comes from your books, a supplier’s invoice reporting, an eligibility or reversal issue, or an action in the Invoice Management System (IMS). You cannot edit GSTR-2B; correct the underlying record or reporting treatment, then claim only the credit permitted for the relevant transaction and tax period.
Start by matching the records
Compare your purchase register and accounting records with the downloaded GSTR-2B data. Match each document using the supplier’s GSTIN, invoice or debit note number and date, taxable value, tax amounts, place of supply, and tax period. A mismatch at this level helps distinguish a missing supplier document from a duplicate entry, a posting error, or a question about whether the credit is eligible.

GSTR-2B is a read-only, static ITC statement: a recipient cannot add a missing invoice or amend a document in it. The GST Portal recommends reconciling the statement with your own records. GST Portal: GSTR-2B FAQ
Identify where the mismatch originates
- Missing or incorrect supplier document: Ask the supplier to check its outward-supply reporting and make any correction through a return facility available for the relevant period.
- Your own duplicate, posting, or period-allocation error: Correct the reconciliation in your books and assess the proper return treatment. Do not claim the same credit twice.
- Eligibility, reversal, or timing question: Check the legal rules for the particular transaction and period. A mismatch alone does not establish that ITC is either available or unavailable; a reversal or later re-availment depends on the applicable facts and rules.
- IMS difference: Review the individual invoice or amendment, take the appropriate IMS action, and recompute GSTR-2B if the portal requires it before filing GSTR-3B.
If the supplier needs to correct its reporting
GSTR-1A is a supplier-side facility to amend a record or report a missed record for the same tax period. The GST Portal describes it as optional and available after filing GSTR-1—or after its due date, whichever is later—and before the supplier files GSTR-3B for that period. The recipient cannot make this correction in GSTR-2B.

After the supplier files the GSTR-1A correction, the related ITC is reflected in the recipient’s GSTR-2B for the next tax period, according to the GST Portal. Do not assume it will alter an already generated GSTR-2B for the original period. Confirm that the supplier filed the correction, then check the relevant later statement. Check IMS records before filing
IMS actions affect how records flow into ITC statements and GSTR-3B. The GST Portal’s advisory describes the following treatment:
Rank #2
- Accepted: The record goes to ITC available and auto-populates GSTR-3B.
- Rejected: The record goes to ITC rejected and does not auto-populate GSTR-3B.
- Pending: The record remains outside GSTR-2B and GSTR-3B while it is pending action.
The advisory describes recipient actions after GSTR-2B generation and says recomputation may be needed. It also states that action is not available after GSTR-3B has been filed for that month. Check the current portal workflow and any record-specific restrictions before relying on a pending status. GST Portal: IMS advisory
Review GSTR-3B rather than treating prefill as a decision
GSTR-3B is auto-populated with ITC from GSTR-2B, but the prefilled figures are editable and remain the taxpayer’s responsibility. CBIC Circular 170/02/2022-GST, issued on 6 July 2022, describes the auto-population and editing facility and addresses reporting eligible, ineligible or blocked ITC and reversals. Apply the rules for the transaction and period, review the figures, and account for any required exclusions or reversals before filing. CBIC Circular 170/02/2022-GST · GST Council circular listing

The GST Portal cautions that an “ITC not available” indication in GSTR-2B covers specified scenarios and that other legal restrictions may also apply. Conversely, an invoice appearing in GSTR-2B does not by itself prove entitlement. Self-assess eligibility and make applicable reversals; do not claim credit merely because it is prefilled.
Choose the correction route by the cause and timing
| Where the issue sits | What to check or do | How the correction may flow |
|---|---|---|
| Recipient’s books or accounting | Reconcile the posting, duplicate, or period allocation and determine the appropriate ITC treatment. | Correct your own records; do not expect to edit GSTR-2B. |
| Supplier’s outward-supply reporting | Ask the supplier to verify and, where available, amend or add the same-period detail through GSTR-1A before filing that period’s GSTR-3B. | The portal says the related ITC appears in the recipient’s next tax-period GSTR-2B. |
| IMS action | Review the specific record and take the appropriate action; recompute GSTR-2B if required before filing. | Accepted, rejected, and pending records have different effects on ITC availability and auto-population. |
| Eligibility, reversal, or timing | Assess the facts and rules for the transaction and tax period, including whether a reversal or later re-availment is permitted. | Neither a mismatch nor GSTR-2B appearance alone settles entitlement. |
The route can depend on whether the relevant return has already been filed, whether the record is in IMS, and when a correction can flow into GSTR-2B. Supplier GSTR-1A and recipient IMS actions are separate mechanisms, not ways to edit GSTR-2B.

When the answer needs a period-specific review
These portal procedures do not determine every invoice’s legal treatment. The outcome can depend on the tax period, the reason for the mismatch, filing status, ITC eligibility, statutory time limits, later amendments, and the portal workflow in effect. Check the applicable rules and current GST Portal instructions for the return in question; where those facts leave uncertainty, seek qualified tax advice before reporting or reversing credit.
