If an electronic Social Security payment is missing on its scheduled date, contact your bank or financial institution first and ask whether the deposit is delayed in posting. If the bank cannot resolve the issue, report the late, missing, or possibly stolen payment to the Social Security Administration (SSA) at 1-800-772-1213 or TTY 1-800-325-0778. SSA will review your case and replace the payment if it is due.
What to do first when a Social Security payment is missing
- Check the scheduled payment date and the account that should receive it. Confirm that the date has arrived and that you are checking the bank account or financial institution associated with your direct deposit.
- Ask the bank whether the deposit is delayed in posting. SSA specifically directs people with a missing electronic payment to contact their financial institution first. Ask whether the deposit is pending or delayed before reporting it to SSA. SSA: How do I report a missing payment?
- Contact SSA if the bank cannot resolve it. Call the national number or contact a local Social Security office. Explain that the payment is late, missing, or may have been stolen. SSA says it will review the case and replace the payment if it is due.
That replacement is not guaranteed simply because you call: SSA must determine from your record whether the payment is due. Public guidance cannot establish whether a particular payment is pending, stopped, misdirected, or eligible for replacement.

When you call or visit, state plainly that you are reporting a late, missing, or possibly stolen payment. Use SSA’s official phone number, website, or local office for benefit questions; do not send bank details or sensitive personal information through unofficial channels.
What information to have ready
Be prepared to identify the payment you are asking SSA to review and to explain what you have already checked. Useful details include the scheduled date, the benefit involved, the account you expected the deposit in, and what the bank told you. Share personal or banking information only through an official SSA or bank channel, and provide whatever identifying information SSA requests to locate your record.

If your direct-deposit account may be wrong
If the payment may have gone to an outdated or incorrect account, update your direct-deposit details through an available official route. Eligible Social Security beneficiaries can use a my Social Security account to change direct deposit. Some banks can also submit updated details through Automated Enrollment, if the bank offers that service. If you receive SSI
Online address and direct-deposit change services are not currently available to SSI recipients in the same way they are for some other beneficiaries. SSI recipients may be able to check some profile information online, but may need to call SSA or contact a local office to make a change. If a payment is missing, follow the bank-first steps for an electronic deposit, then contact SSA if the bank cannot resolve it.

If the notice is about an overpayment instead
An overpayment notice is different from a payment that failed to arrive. The right response depends on whether you dispute the overpayment or accept that it occurred but need relief from repayment:

SSA says it will pause collection while it decides an appeal or waiver request filed within 30 days. Review SSA’s instructions on appealing or requesting a waiver of an overpayment and follow the filing directions in your notice.

Keep the problem on the right track
- For an electronic deposit that has not posted: ask the bank first; contact SSA if the bank cannot resolve it.
- For a possible account-detail problem: use my Social Security if the change is available for your benefit, ask whether your bank supports Automated Enrollment, or contact SSA by phone or appointment.
