For a full online store, connect WordPress to PayPal through the official WooCommerce PayPal Payments plugin. For a site selling only a few fixed-price products, services, or donations, use PayPal Payment Buttons or a payment link instead. Whichever route you choose, test with separate PayPal Sandbox merchant and buyer accounts before switching to Live mode.
Choose the right PayPal connection first
“PayPal Commerce” is not one universal WordPress setting or one identical product in every country. The best integration depends on whether you need a complete ecommerce system, a simple payment button, recurring billing, or a custom checkout.

| What you need | Best-fit option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Full product catalog and cart | WooCommerce PayPal Payments | Connects PayPal with WooCommerce orders, checkout, refunds, payment statuses, and webhooks. |
| A few fixed-price products, services, or donations | PayPal Payment Buttons or Payment Links | Requires less setup than WooCommerce. |
| WordPress.com payment page | PayPal Payment Buttons block | Designed for insertion through the WordPress.com editor. |
| Recurring products or memberships | WooCommerce plus supported PayPal subscription functionality | Provides a store structure, but renewals, cancellations, and failed payments require careful testing. |
| Custom checkout or SaaS application | PayPal developer APIs and SDKs | Offers maximum control, but requires secure server-side development and webhook handling. |
| Multiple processors in one store | WooCommerce with PayPal and another gateway | Can provide customers with a fallback payment option. |
Do not install WooCommerce solely to add one payment button unless you also need its cart, inventory, shipping, tax, customer, or order-management features.

What you need before connecting PayPal
- A functioning WordPress website and administrator access.
- WooCommerce installed and configured if you are building a store.
- A PayPal account suitable for receiving commercial payments. WooCommerce’s onboarding documentation describes connecting or creating a PayPal Business account and linking financial information.
- A store currency, products, prices, shipping rules, tax settings, and checkout page.
- HTTPS/SSL on the production site.
- A separate PayPal Developer Sandbox merchant account and buyer account for testing.
PayPal payment methods, supported currencies, card processing, Pay Later, Venmo, and other alternative methods vary by country, currency, merchant eligibility, account type, and integration. Check the WooCommerce currency documentation and PayPal’s checkout availability information for your market.

Connect PayPal to WooCommerce
1. Install the official plugin
- In WordPress, open Plugins → Add New Plugin.
- Search for WooCommerce PayPal Payments.
- Confirm that you are selecting the official WooCommerce/PayPal integration.
- Select Install Now, then Activate.
The current WordPress.org listing records WordPress 6.3 or newer as a requirement. Plugin versions and requirements change, so verify the live plugin listing before installation.
2. Open WooCommerce payment settings
Go to WooCommerce → Settings → Payments. Select PayPal, then choose Enable, Complete setup, or the equivalent current button shown on your installation.
3. Complete automatic onboarding
- Select Activate PayPal Payments.
- Sign in to the intended merchant PayPal account.
- Review and approve the requested connection.
- Return to WordPress.
- Confirm that PayPal is connected and enabled.
Automatic onboarding is normally preferable because it avoids manually copying credentials. The exact labels may change as the plugin is updated; the current process is documented in WooCommerce’s account setup guide.
4. Review payment methods and checkout display
Open the plugin settings and review the available sections, which may include PayPal Checkout, Online Card Payments, Alternative Payment Methods, Smart Button placement and styling, Sandbox mode, and webhook status. Depending on your account and location, you may see:
- PayPal wallet checkout.
- Pay Later.
- Venmo.
- Card fields or expanded card checkout.
- Other alternative payment methods.
Do not assume every option will appear. PayPal determines availability based on factors including country, currency, account eligibility, and payment method. See the WooCommerce plugin settings guide.

- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Get set up quickly with no long-term commitments. Download the Square Point of Sale app for free, create an account, and start taking payments anywhere.
- Run your business all in one place with the free Square Point of Sale app. Track your sales, manage inventory, accept tips, send receipts digitally, and more.
- Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.
Connect manually with a Client ID and Secret Key
Use manual credentials when automatic onboarding is unavailable or when your development workflow requires it. For an ordinary WooCommerce store, automatic onboarding is usually simpler.
- Open the PayPal Developer Dashboard.
- Open Apps & Credentials.
- Choose Sandbox or Live.
- Select Create App.
- Copy the displayed Client ID and Secret Key.
- In WooCommerce PayPal Payments, open the advanced setup options and choose manual connection.
- Enter the credentials for the same environment and connect the account.
WooCommerce places advanced options on the initial welcome screen. If you have already reached a later Complete Your Payment Setup screen and cannot find manual setup, select Back to return to the welcome screen.
Keep credentials private
- Never place the Secret Key in frontend JavaScript, browser source, a screenshot, a forum post, or a public repository.
- Keep Sandbox and Live credentials separate.
- Do not use a buyer’s Sandbox credentials as merchant credentials.
- Regenerate any exposed Secret Key immediately.
- Do not substitute old API Username, API Password, and API Signature instructions unless the specific integration you selected still requires them.
Older PayPal Standard and Express Checkout guides often show obsolete plugins, fields, and menu paths. The current WooCommerce setup uses the modern onboarding flow or the Client ID and Secret Key route described above.
Test the connection in PayPal Sandbox
Sandbox testing lets you verify the checkout and order workflow without charging a real customer.
- Create or access a PayPal Developer account.
- Open the Developer Dashboard.
- Create a Sandbox business account to act as the merchant.
- Create a separate Sandbox personal account to act as the buyer.
- Enable Sandbox Mode in WooCommerce PayPal Payments.
- Connect the Sandbox merchant account.
- Open the store as a customer and complete a test checkout with the Sandbox buyer account.
- Review the result in WooCommerce and PayPal Sandbox.
A successful test should produce a corresponding WooCommerce order, transaction ID, expected order-status change, customer confirmation email, merchant notification, and PayPal Sandbox activity. Test refunds and cancellations if those operations matter to your business.

Test more than the PayPal redirect
Use this matrix before launch:
- Successful PayPal wallet payment.
- Guest card payment, if card checkout is enabled and available.
- Pay Later or Venmo, if those options appear for your account.
- Customer cancellation, payment failure, and timeout.
- Mobile and desktop checkout.
- Guest and logged-in customers.
- Duplicate clicks and browser back-button behavior.
- Correct WooCommerce status and transaction ID.
- Stock reduction, shipping, tax, and total calculations.
- Customer and merchant emails.
- Full and partial refunds.
- Webhook delivery and status.
Switch from Sandbox to Live payments
- Confirm that the production PayPal account is verified and eligible to receive commercial payments.
- Confirm that the intended Live account—not the Sandbox merchant—is connected.
- Disable Sandbox mode.
- Complete Live onboarding or enter the correct Live credentials.
- Review which payment methods are actually enabled in Live mode.
- If practical, place a genuine low-value production transaction.
- Confirm the exact amount in both WooCommerce and the live PayPal account.
- Verify the order status, emails, stock, tax, shipping, and fulfillment behavior.
- Refund the transaction if it was only a smoke test.
Sandbox success does not prove that your Live account, production credentials, currency, eligibility, or payment methods are configured correctly.

Add PayPal to WordPress without WooCommerce
WordPress.com
PayPal’s WordPress payment-button instructions say WordPress.com users can insert a PayPal Payment Buttons block through the block inserter by searching for PayPal.
Self-hosted WordPress
For a WordPress.org/self-hosted site, PayPal describes installing and activating its Payment Buttons plugin, then inserting the PayPal block into a post or page.
Payment links
A payment link can be useful when you need to request a one-time payment from a page, email, message, or social channel. PayPal’s Payments FAQ identifies payment links as one-time-payment functionality.
Buttons and links are a poor substitute for WooCommerce when you need a multi-item cart, variable products, shipping calculations, inventory, coupons, automated tax handling, customer accounts, detailed order administration, complex refunds, recurring billing, or fulfillment and accounting integrations.

- Pay one transparent rate per swipe for Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
- Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. Also lets you send receipts via e-mail or text message, makes it easy to apply discounts, keeps a data and sales history log and more.
- Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
- App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).
What happens technically after a customer pays?
- The customer selects PayPal or another enabled PayPal payment method.
- PayPal’s checkout interface handles authorization.
- WooCommerce receives the payment result and records the transaction against the order.
- PayPal sends later payment-event notifications through webhooks, such as capture completion, refunds, disputes, or subscription changes.
- WooCommerce updates the order and fulfillment state based on those events.
A browser redirect is not a reliable substitute for server-to-server notification. If an order appears stuck, compare the WooCommerce order, the PayPal transaction, and the webhook status before changing the order manually. WooCommerce documents webhook-related settings in its plugin settings guide, and its GitHub repository includes development and testing information.

| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| PayPal account will not connect | Confirm the intended commercial account, environment, administrator privileges, valid SSL, current plugin, unblocked authorization popup, and an unexpired PayPal session. Retry in a private window. Use manual credentials only when appropriate. |
| Button does not appear | Confirm PayPal is enabled, the currency is supported, the account is eligible, and the correct WooCommerce checkout page is active. Check browser-console JavaScript errors and disable script delay, minification, caching, or consent features temporarily to isolate conflicts. |
| Checkout spinner never finishes | Look for JavaScript errors, theme or page-builder checkout changes, firewall blocks, and multiple plugins loading conflicting PayPal JavaScript SDKs. |
| Order remains pending | Check whether payment was authorized but not captured, the webhook was delayed or blocked, the order total changed, payment was held for review, or Live credentials are mismatched. Do not mark the order Processing or Completed until the payment record is verified. |
| Payment succeeded but the customer did not return | Check the PayPal transaction and webhook status before assuming failure. The redirect is not the only source of payment confirmation. |
| Sandbox works but Live fails | Check that Sandbox mode is disabled, Live onboarding is complete, the Live account is verified, the Live currency is supported, and the correct modern credentials are being used. |
| Duplicate PayPal buttons or gateways | Remove or disable legacy PayPal gateways and duplicate PayPal plugins. Do not run several plugins that load the PayPal SDK at once. |
| Payment method is unavailable | Check the merchant’s country, currency, account eligibility, payment method, and integration type. Availability is not universal. |
PayPal fees and alternative gateways
The WooCommerce PayPal Payments plugin is distributed through WordPress.org without a plugin purchase price. That does not make payment processing free; PayPal still charges transaction fees.
For United States merchants, PayPal’s fee page checked on July 15, 2026 listed different rates by payment method, including:
- PayPal Checkout and Guest Checkout: 3.49% + $0.49 for domestic commercial transactions.
- Standard credit and debit card payments: 2.99% + $0.49.
- Pay Later: 4.99% + $0.49.
- International commercial transactions: generally an additional 1.50%, subject to the applicable terms and payment type.
PayPal’s separate business pricing page also shows Expanded Checkout pricing starting at 2.89% + $0.29 and PayPal and Venmo pricing at 3.49% + $0.49. These are United States figures, not universal prices. Rates depend on product, payment method, currency, transaction type, and market, and can change. Check the current PayPal US merchant fee schedule before making pricing decisions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWooCommerce stores can also consider WooPayments or Stripe. WooPayments is a WooCommerce-integrated payment solution; Stripe is often chosen for card payments, developer customization, and Stripe-native billing tools. PayPal adds a distinct wallet checkout, so using PayPal alongside another gateway can be sensible when you want customer choice or a fallback—provided the gateways work correctly together and the checkout remains clear.
