There is no universal winner among Supermicro, Dell, HPE, and Lenovo AI servers. The defensible way to choose is to compare complete, region-specific configurations against the same workload and facility plan: accelerator generation and memory, GPU interconnect, host CPU and RAM, storage and fabric, rack space, cooling, power, management, service terms, and the fully configured price. The systems documented here range from a 4U liquid-cooled server to a 10U air-oriented design, so a specification-sheet comparison alone can produce a costly mismatch.
Start with the buying unit: a configured system, not a GPU count
An eight-accelerator server is not a standard performance unit. The eight devices might be NVIDIA B200, H100, H200, or H20 accelerators, AMD Instinct MI300X devices, or Intel Gaudi 3 accelerators. They have different memory capacities, software stacks, interconnects, host requirements, and availability. Even two systems using the same accelerator family can differ in CPU balance, network adapters, storage, firmware, cooling, and service scope.

Write the comparison around one executable workload. For distributed training, record model size, sequence length, batch size, precision, data-set location, checkpoint frequency, and target time to train. For inference, record model, context length, concurrent users, tokens per second, latency target, quantization, and availability objective. For scientific or engineering workloads, specify the solver, mesh or data size, parallelism, and I/O pattern. Ask every supplier to quote the same assumptions and to identify anything they cannot supply.

What the documented platforms actually contain
The following figures come from the named manufacturers’ product pages, guides, or the official certified-systems listing. They are configuration facts, not a cross-vendor performance test. A “not stated” entry means the cited material does not establish a comparable value.
| Platform | Accelerator configuration | Chassis and cooling | Host, memory and management details | Power or integration notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Supermicro SYS-A21GE-NBRT | Eight NVIDIA B200 SXM GPUs; 1.4 TB of vendor-described GPU memory space | 10U rack system; cooling method is not stated in the cited product summary | Dual 4th/5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processor support; 32 DDR5 DIMM slots; front hot-swap NVMe bays; two 10GbE RJ-45 ports; dedicated BMC/IPMI | Six redundant 5,250 W power supplies; compare usable and facility power figures in the quote rather than adding nameplate ratings |
| Supermicro SYS-421GE-NBRT-LCC | Eight NVIDIA B200 SXM GPUs | 4U liquid-cooled system | Other host, storage and network values are not stated in the cited summary | Purchase is tied to complete liquid-cooled rack integration and on-site service; verify water loop, CDU, rack and commissioning scope before treating it as a server-only purchase |
| Dell PowerEdge XE9680 | Eight-GPU options include NVIDIA HGX H100 80 GB, H200 141 GB, H20 96 GB, AMD Instinct MI300X 192 GB, or Intel Gaudi 3 128 GB configurations | 6U rack server | 4th- and 5th-generation Intel Xeon Scalable options; memory and other host details depend on processor generation and selected accelerator build | The specification sheet lists alternatives within one family but does not establish equal performance, availability or pricing for them |
| HPE Cray XD675 | AMD Instinct MI300X; 192 GB HBM3 per GPU | Chassis and cooling details must be checked in the selected configuration | Comparable CPU, RAM, storage and fabric values are not established by the cited guide | Guide lists 12.15 kW system consumption, dependent on configuration; request the test condition and facility-side figure |
| HPE Cray XD685 Gen11 | Official certified-systems listing includes an eight-GPU NVIDIA HGX H200 configuration | Exact chassis and cooling details are model-specific | Full current product specification was not established by the cited material | Do not substitute XD685 data for XD675 data; obtain a current, model-specific bill of materials |
| Lenovo ThinkSystem SR680a V3 | Eight NVIDIA HGX H100, H200 or B200 GPUs | 8U, air-cooled | Up to 4 TB of system memory listed; XClarity Controller 2 systems management | Confirm rack depth, service clearance, configured power and network options for the ordered build |
| Lenovo ThinkSystem SR680a V4 | Product guide describes an eight-GPU NVIDIA HGX B300 NVL8 configuration | Exact form factor and cooling values must be taken from the V4 orderable configuration | Generation-specific host and management details require the current product guide and quote | Check current orderability and regional SKU status; V4 is not automatically interchangeable with V3 |
Compare accelerator platforms and memory correctly
Generation and memory per device
Record the exact accelerator SKU, not merely “B200” or “H200,” and capture memory per device, memory type, and the aggregate memory in the proposed server. The documented examples span HBM3 MI300X devices with 192 GB each, H200 devices with 141 GB in the cited Dell configuration, H100 devices with 80 GB, H20 devices with 96 GB, Gaudi 3 devices with 128 GB, and B200 systems described by total GPU memory space. These figures cannot be converted directly into an application result because usable memory depends on partitioning, framework support, tensor parallelism, and the model’s communication pattern.
Ask for a written statement of which accelerator generation is physically shipping, whether the quote permits substitutions, and what happens if that generation is unavailable. A substitution clause that changes memory, interconnect or software support can invalidate the original sizing exercise.

Document the scale-up topology: the GPU complex, switch arrangement, link generation, and whether all accelerators can communicate at the advertised bandwidth. Then document scale-out networking, including adapter model, port speed, fabric topology, optics, cables, and any required switches. NVIDIA HGX, AMD Instinct and Intel Gaudi platforms use different interconnect ecosystems. Device count alone says nothing about all-reduce efficiency or inference latency.
Require the supplier to draw the topology for the exact SKU. “Supports eight GPUs” can describe a tightly coupled complex or a configuration whose useful communication is constrained by host or switch layout. For multi-node training, include the number of servers, oversubscription ratio, and failure-domain design in the test plan.
Software and framework fit
List the operating system, accelerator drivers, container runtime, orchestration integration, compiler or kernel libraries, and supported versions for the workload. Have the application owner run a representative pilot on the proposed accelerator family. A platform with more memory can still be the wrong choice if a critical framework, custom kernel, or observability agent is unavailable or requires a rewrite.
Host CPU, memory, storage and networking
Host balance
Accelerators do not eliminate host work. Data decoding, augmentation, encryption, checkpointing, orchestration, storage protocol handling and control-plane services consume CPU cores and RAM. The Supermicro SYS-A21GE-NBRT lists dual 4th/5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable support and 32 DDR5 DIMM slots. Dell’s XE9680 CPU and memory details vary with processor generation. Lenovo lists up to 4 TB of system memory for the SR680a V3. Treat these as starting points, then size the host for the actual pipeline.

Storage and data path
Specify boot media separately from data and scratch media. Capture the number and type of NVMe drives, usable capacity after protection, RAID or erasure scheme, endurance rating, spare policy, and the path to shared storage. The Supermicro SYS-A21GE-NBRT summary identifies front hot-swap NVMe bays, but it does not define a complete capacity or performance build. Dell and Lenovo options likewise require a configuration-specific bill of materials.
For training, measure sustained read throughput and checkpoint write time with the real data set. For inference, measure model-load time, cache behavior and recovery time. Include network storage, local disks, and any parallel file system in the same test; quoting only the server’s internal NVMe capacity hides a major dependency.
Fabric and adapter details
Record adapter count, port speed, bus placement, firmware, optics and cable lengths. Confirm that the rack switches, upstream network and security controls support the selected fabric. A server quote that omits optics or switch ports is not a deployable network design. For multi-node jobs, require a failure test showing what happens when a link, adapter or switch port is lost.
Rack space, cooling and power are first-order decisions
Form factor and service clearance
The cited systems occupy 4U, 6U, 8U and 10U. Rack units are not interchangeable planning numbers: depth, rail kit, weight, cable bend radius, front and rear service clearance, and adjacent equipment affect whether a system fits. An 8U server may consume less vertical space than a 10U model, but the rack can still fail a weight, depth or rear-clearance check.
Before accepting a quote, obtain chassis depth and weight, rail requirements, minimum front and rear clearance, door and aisle constraints, and the number of adjacent blanking panels or airflow baffles. Have the facilities team sign off on the rack elevation rather than leaving fit to the installer.
Air versus liquid cooling
Lenovo’s SR680a V3 is documented as air-cooled. The Supermicro SYS-421GE-NBRT-LCC is explicitly liquid-cooled and requires complete liquid-cooled rack integration and on-site service. Those are different projects, not merely two chassis options. Liquid cooling can change rack distribution, coolant distribution units, leak detection, water quality, maintenance procedures and commissioning responsibility.
For any liquid design, ask who supplies the coolant distribution unit, manifolds, hoses, quick disconnects, leak sensors, treatment, monitoring and emergency response. Define whether the supplier guarantees only the server or the complete loop. For air designs, verify supply-air temperature, airflow, containment and the room’s ability to reject the heat at the proposed density.

Power sizing and redundancy
Use three numbers: IT load at the server, facility-side peak load, and expected operating load for the workload. Capture voltage, phase, connector, circuit count, power-supply redundancy mode and transient requirements. The Supermicro SYS-A21GE-NBRT lists six redundant 5,250 W supplies; that is a nameplate and redundancy detail, not a promise that the server continuously draws 31.5 kW. HPE’s XD675 guide lists 12.15 kW system consumption subject to configuration, so request the measurement condition and whether fans, networking and storage are included.

A simple energy screen is kilowatts × operating hours. If a configuration actually operates at the documented 12.15 kW for 8,760 hours, the arithmetic is 106,434 kWh per year before adding cooling overhead, power-distribution losses and non-IT loads. Multiply the measured or contracted kWh by the facility’s tariff and demand charges; do not treat this illustration as a price estimate. Add the data center’s power-usage effectiveness (PUE) only after facilities supplies the applicable value.
Check generator, UPS, breaker and busway capacity at the rack and room level. GPU workloads can create sustained high load and rapid changes when jobs start or stop. Require a commissioning test at the intended power cap and redundancy state.
Management, firmware and operations
Management features become financial controls when a cluster has dozens of nodes. Record the baseboard management controller, telemetry, remote console, inventory, automated provisioning, firmware policy, role-based access, audit logs and integration with the organization’s monitoring system. Lenovo identifies XClarity Controller 2 for the SR680a V3; obtain equivalent, written details for each other platform.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Ask how firmware bundles are tested against accelerator drivers, how security updates are distributed, whether updates can be staged without taking every node offline, and how failed components are identified. Include spare parts, field-replaceable-unit procedures, remote hands, and the escalation path for an accelerator or liquid-loop fault. A management feature has value only if it fits the existing image, ticketing and observability processes.
Service, procurement and quote normalization
The cited materials do not establish comparable prices, delivery lead times, regional availability, warranty response, or total cost of ownership. Those variables must come from written, region-specific quotes. Request the same commercial fields from every supplier:
- Exact model, generation, accelerator SKU and accelerator count, with substitution rules.
- CPU models, core count, memory capacity and population, storage drives and protection scheme.
- Network adapters, optics, cables, switch ports and fabric design.
- Chassis, rails, rack integration, cooling equipment, water-loop work and commissioning.
- Power supplies, circuit assumptions, power cap, measured peak and expected operating draw.
- Operating system, drivers, management software, support subscriptions and license duration.
- Warranty term, on-site response target, parts availability, installation responsibility and escalation contacts.
- Ship-to region, taxes, currency, delivery date, quote validity and payment milestones.
Normalize the quote into a bill of materials and a responsibility matrix. Mark each line as included, optional, customer-supplied or excluded. Keep one-time capital costs separate from recurring support, software, electricity, cooling and financing costs. A lower server price is not comparable if another quote includes integration and support.
A repeatable apples-to-apples comparison process
- Define the workload. Freeze the model or application version, data set, precision, concurrency, latency or time-to-solution target, and expected utilization.
- Set the deployment envelope. Record available rack units, depth, weight, voltage, circuits, UPS and generator capacity, room cooling, water-loop capability, network fabric and service clearance.
- Choose candidate configurations. Select a specific Supermicro, Dell, HPE or Lenovo model and accelerator generation. Do not compare a family label with a fully specified server.
- Issue one common request for quotation. Send the same workload, facility assumptions and required line items to each supplier. Require responses in the same units and currency.
- Validate topology and software. Review the GPU interconnect drawing, NUMA map, network design, driver stack, framework support and firmware policy with the platform team.
- Run a representative proof of concept. Measure throughput, latency, scaling, memory headroom, checkpoint time, power and failure recovery. Use the same software build and data path for every platform.
- Model five-year ownership. Add acquisition, integration, support, software, energy, cooling, floor space, spares, financing and decommissioning. State assumptions so a changed tariff or utilization can be recomputed.
- Review contractual risk. Check delivery dates, accelerator substitutions, acceptance tests, liquid-cooling responsibilities, response times, service geography and return or replacement terms.
- Approve only a deployable design. Obtain written sign-off from application, infrastructure, facilities, security, finance and operations owners before issuing a purchase order.
How the four vendor paths differ
Supermicro: density and deployment choices
The SYS-A21GE-NBRT gives a clearly documented 10U, eight-B200 option with dual Xeon support, 32 DDR5 DIMM slots, front hot-swap NVMe, two 10GbE ports, BMC/IPMI and six redundant 5,250 W supplies. The separate 4U SYS-421GE-NBRT-LCC offers the same eight-B200 headline in a liquid-cooled design, but the mandatory complete rack integration and on-site service changes the procurement scope. Compare these as two deployment patterns: a larger chassis with its own integration questions versus a compact liquid-cooled rack project.
Dell: one family, several accelerator ecosystems
The XE9680 is useful when a buyer wants to evaluate NVIDIA, AMD and Intel accelerator options within one server family. Its cited choices include HGX H100, H200 and H20, MI300X and Gaudi 3, with the memory figures listed in the table. That breadth does not prove equal throughput, availability or support. Lock the accelerator choice before comparing host memory, network fabric, software and price.

HPE: identify the exact Cray platform
XD675 documentation provides a concrete MI300X example: 192 GB HBM3 per GPU and 12.15 kW system consumption dependent on configuration. The certified-systems listing separately identifies an XD685 Gen11 with eight HGX H200 GPUs. These are distinct product lines. A buyer must request the current XD685 specification, then compare its exact chassis, CPU, memory, storage, network and service terms rather than carrying XD675 values across.
Lenovo: generation and cooling matter
The SR680a V3 is documented as an 8U air-cooled system supporting eight HGX H100, H200 or B200 GPUs, up to 4 TB of memory, and XClarity Controller 2. Lenovo’s V4 guide describes an eight-GPU HGX B300 NVL8 configuration. Keep V3 and V4 separate in the procurement record and verify whether the V4 configuration is orderable in the required region and delivery window.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommon comparison mistakes and how to correct them
Treating GPU count as performance
Failure: declaring an eight-GPU server faster because it has the same or greater device count. Correction: compare accelerator generation, memory, topology, software and a controlled workload test.
Comparing unlike HPE systems
Failure: using XD675 MI300X specifications as if they describe XD685 Gen11 HGX H200. Correction: keep the model names and accelerator platforms separate and obtain a current specification for the exact quote.
Ignoring integration in liquid cooling
Failure: budgeting a liquid-cooled server as a 4U appliance. Correction: price the complete rack integration, distribution unit, plumbing, monitoring, commissioning and on-site service described as required for the SYS-421GE-NBRT-LCC.
Using nameplate power as operating power
Failure: adding redundant supply ratings and treating the result as consumption, or using one guide’s system figure for every configuration. Correction: request measured peak and expected operating draw for the selected build, then model facility losses and cooling separately.
Comparing a current model with an unorderable generation
Failure: selecting Lenovo V4 features from a guide without checking regional orderability, or assuming a V3 quote includes V4 capabilities. Correction: require a current SKU, availability statement and delivery commitment.

Leaving service terms until after technical selection
Failure: choosing hardware before checking response time, parts geography, installation scope or accelerator replacement terms. Correction: include those fields in the initial request for quotation and acceptance test.
Using generic consumer hardware as a proxy
Failure: inferring rack-scale economics from a standalone graphics card or a generic rack. Correction: evaluate the complete server, fabric, cooling and operations design that the enterprise workload actually requires.
A finance-ready ownership model
For capital planning, separate the project into four ledgers:
- Acquisition: server, accelerators, memory, drives, adapters, switches, optics, racks and installation.
- Recurring operations: support, software, electricity, cooling, network circuits, monitoring, spares and staffing.
- Capacity risk: idle capacity, expansion nodes, accelerator substitutions, refresh timing and resale or disposal assumptions.
- Business value: jobs completed, service-level improvement, avoided cloud spend or revenue contribution, with utilization and uncertainty ranges stated.
Calculate cost per useful workload unit rather than cost per GPU. Depending on the application, that unit might be a completed training run, million generated tokens at a latency target, solved simulation, or processed data volume. Use measured utilization from the proof of concept. A server that is inexpensive per accelerator but idle because of data, software or cooling constraints may have a higher cost per result.
Run sensitivity cases for utilization, electricity tariff, PUE, support renewal, delivery delay and accelerator replacement. Keep vendor performance claims separate from your own acceptance measurements; the cited product materials do not provide an independent cross-vendor benchmark or a total-cost-of-ownership result.
What a defensible final recommendation looks like
A sound recommendation names the exact model and accelerator generation, states the workload and facility assumptions, lists included and excluded infrastructure, and shows the measured result and five-year cost range. It also records why the alternatives were not selected: insufficient memory, incompatible software, unavailable power, unacceptable cooling scope, missing service coverage or a delivery date that misses the project.
If the evidence does not establish a winner, say so. The documented platforms span different accelerator ecosystems and chassis designs, and the available material does not establish equal performance, price, lead time, service response or regional availability. The correct next step is a common request for quotation followed by a workload and facility validation—not a universal ranking based on specifications alone.
