SPY and USO are not substitutes. SPY is a U.S. large-cap stock fund designed to track the S&P 500; USO is a commodity-pool security whose objective is tied to crude-oil futures, not ownership of oil. Comparing them starts with the exposure you want, how long you expect to hold it, and how much risk you can tolerate—not with their ticker prices.
What exposure does each fund provide?
SPY: large-cap U.S. stocks
SPY seeks, before fees and expenses, to correspond generally to the performance of the S&P 500 Index. The index measures the large-cap segment of the U.S. equity market and weights companies by float-adjusted market capitalization. SPY invests in the index’s constituent stocks, so its value can rise or fall with those companies and the broader stock market. See State Street’s SPY fund information.

USO: oil-futures exposure
USO seeks changes in its net asset value tied to Cushing light sweet crude oil, as measured by its benchmark oil futures contract, plus collateral interest and less expenses. It invests primarily in oil futures and may use swaps, forwards, or other oil-related investments in specified circumstances. It is not a fund that simply holds barrels of crude. USCF warns: “AN INVESTMENT IN USO SHOULD NOT BE VIEWED AS AN INVESTMENT IN THE BENCHMARK OIL FUTURES CONTRACT OR LIGHT SWEET CRUDE OIL.” See USCF’s USO overview.
Why does USO’s futures roll matter?
USO’s described benchmark shifts from a near-month NYMEX crude-oil futures contract to the next-month contract during a five-day roll period. The futures curve can affect returns independently of changes in spot oil prices. In contango, later-dated contracts cost more than nearer-dated ones; replacing a maturing contract may then weigh on returns over time if oil-price movements do not offset the effect. In backwardation, the curve can have the opposite tendency. Neither condition guarantees a particular result.

USCF said that beginning January 1, 2026, it would seek to rebalance specified positions across each day of the five-day roll period. The roll dates are projected and may change without notice; check the USO document library and USCF disclosures for current details.
How do their risks differ?
- SPY: Broad diversification across large U.S. companies does not prevent losses when the equity market falls. The fund’s prospectus also identifies transaction costs associated with portfolio turnover. Information technology was a significant investment as of December 31, 2025, so the index’s sector composition matters as well as its number of holdings. Review the SEC-filed prospectus materials and State Street risk information.
- USO: In addition to crude-oil price volatility, investors face futures-curve and roll effects, as well as the risks of the fund’s permitted derivatives and structure. Its results can differ from changes in the spot price of crude.
- Both: An exchange-traded fund or security can lose value. Your outcome also depends on the price paid, expenses, and the price at which you can sell.
Compare costs and trading conditions on equal terms
Expense ratios are only one part of ownership cost. Before comparing, use current fund documents and distinguish recurring fund expenses from trading costs such as bid-ask spreads and any premium or discount to net asset value. Check the same date and trading context for both securities; these conditions change.

State Street’s fact sheet dated June 30, 2026 reported SPY gross and net expense ratios of 0.0945%, 504 holdings, and a 0.96% 30-day SEC yield. These are dated snapshots, not forecasts or a complete measure of total ownership costs. The accessible USCF overview labels a Total Expense Ratio but does not provide a value in the cited page content, so a current USO fee should be taken from its latest prospectus or fact sheet rather than inferred. Do not treat SPY’s yield as comparable to an oil-futures return. SPY’s reported 30-day SEC yield is a standardized income measure; USO’s objective concerns futures-linked changes in NAV, collateral interest, and expenses. Check each fund’s distribution information and methodology if income is part of your comparison.

Match the comparison to your purpose and holding period
- Desired exposure: Choose the comparison lens based on whether you mean U.S. large-cap equities or crude-oil futures. The funds pursue different objectives.
- Holding period: A longer holding period in USO makes the futures curve and repeated rolls especially important to understand; oil-price direction alone does not explain its result. SPY is also exposed to market declines and is not guaranteed to grow over any chosen period.
- Loss tolerance: Consider whether you can withstand losses driven by equity-market declines, oil volatility, or futures-market mechanics—and whether the security fits your broader financial plan. This comparison does not establish suitability for any individual.
- Return data: If comparing past performance, use the same start and end dates and comparable total-return figures, including distributions where applicable. Do not compare an index’s performance with USO’s share-price return as if they were the same measure. Past results do not predict future performance.
A practical pre-investment checklist
- Read each fund’s current objective and principal risks in its official materials: SPY and USO.
- Confirm current expenses, holdings or exposure, yield or distribution information, and any relevant roll schedule from dated documents.
- Check the market price, bid-ask spread, and premium or discount near the time you would trade; these are time-sensitive.
- Decide whether the product’s mandate and risks match your intended exposure, time horizon, and ability to absorb a loss.
State Street advises investors to “consider its investment objectives, risks, charges, and expenses” before investing in a fund. The key comparison is therefore not which ticker is better in the abstract, but which distinct exposure—if either—fits the decision you are evaluating.
