The reliable way to compare semiconductor stocks is to compare like with like. First identify how each company earns money and who bears manufacturing and capacity risk. Then test whether revenue growth is organic and durable, measure margins and cash generation through a cycle, and only afterward compare valuation multiples using a peer group with similar economics. A fabless chip designer, an integrated manufacturer, and a factory-equipment supplier can all be called “semiconductor stocks,” but their risks, capital needs, and sensible valuation ranges are different.

The framework below is designed for company filings and current market data. The cited company figures are reported results for 2025 or the period specified; share prices and trading multiples must be refreshed on the date you make an investment decision.

A seven-step framework for comparing chip stocks

  1. Classify the business. Establish whether it designs and manufactures chips, designs them and outsources production, supplies standard or specialized components, or sells equipment, testing, or materials to manufacturers.
  2. Map the economics. Record product categories, end markets, manufacturing ownership, foundry dependence, customer concentration, and the main sources of pricing power.
  3. Decompose growth. Separate unit volume, price, mix, acquisitions, currency, inventory recovery, and market share from growth management merely expects.
  4. Measure profitability and reinvestment. Compare gross margin, operating margin, research and development, capital expenditure, working capital, operating cash flow, and free cash flow over several years.
  5. Normalize the cycle. Check results in strong, weak, and recovering demand periods rather than relying on one quarter or one unusually high margin.
  6. Build a genuinely comparable peer set. Match companies by product economics, end markets, capital intensity, growth durability, balance-sheet risk, and customer concentration.
  7. Value the shares with dated assumptions. State the share price date, currency, share class, enterprise value, earnings basis, and whether every multiple uses trailing, forward, or normalized results.

This sequence prevents the common error of declaring a stock cheap because its price-to-earnings ratio is low when earnings are at a cyclical peak, or expensive because free cash flow is temporarily depressed by a factory build-out.

1. Identify the semiconductor business model

Business model determines where gross profit comes from, who funds capacity, and how quickly cash can be redeployed. Use the latest annual report or regulatory filing for each company; labels are useful starting points, not substitutes for the segment disclosures.

Business model What the company does Typical economic exposure Questions to ask
Integrated manufacturer Designs products and owns significant wafer fabrication or other production assets. Control over process, capacity, and supply; high capital requirements; utilization and factory-execution risk. How much capacity is owned? What is utilization? What is the depreciation and capital-expenditure plan? Are new plants justified by contracted or visible demand?
Fabless designer Designs chips while using outside foundries and manufacturing contractors for fabrication, assembly, and test. Lower direct capital requirements and potentially greater flexibility, offset by dependence on foundry allocation, supplier pricing, and external capacity. Which foundries and package partners are critical? Can the company secure leading nodes or specialty capacity? How concentrated are supply and customers?
Component supplier Sells standard products, specialized components, or a combination, sometimes with a hybrid owned-and-outsourced footprint. Portfolio breadth, distribution, inventory, pricing, and application exposure can matter as much as wafer technology. What proportion is standard versus differentiated? How much revenue comes through distributors? How quickly does inventory turn during a correction?
Equipment, test, or materials supplier Sells tools, test services, process materials, or related products to chip manufacturers. Revenue follows customers’ factory investment, utilization, service intensity, and order timing rather than moving exactly with chip vendors’ sales. What is the order pattern? Are backlog and cancellations disclosed? How concentrated are customers? How much revenue is recurring service?

Examples of mixed models

Texas Instruments describes designing and manufacturing semiconductors and presents its analog and embedded-processing portfolio as a source of long-term cash generation. Rambus describes a fabless model that uses third parties for fabrication, assembly, and test. Diodes Incorporated describes standard semiconductor products and a hybrid manufacturing model. These examples illustrate the categories; they are not a complete list, and a company can combine models across products or report a segment that crosses them.

Manufacturing ownership is not automatically good or bad. Owned production can provide process control and supply security, but a large fixed-cost base makes an earnings downturn painful when factories run below efficient utilization. Outsourcing can reduce direct capital needs and preserve flexibility, but a foundry shortage, allocation decision, or contractor disruption can limit shipments. Compare the trade-off with the company’s actual contracts, capacity plans, and product requirements.

2. Define the product and end-market exposure

Two companies with similar revenue growth can have very different future earnings if one sells long-lived industrial components and the other depends on a short product cycle. Build a segment map before looking at valuation.

Record product economics

  • List major product families and identify whether they are standard, application-specific, proprietary, or protected by design wins, software, or intellectual property.
  • Separate high-volume products from products whose value comes from performance, reliability, qualification, or difficult replacement.
  • Note whether a product is sold directly, through distributors, or as part of a system. Distribution can improve reach but can also add inventory swings and obscure the customer’s final demand.
  • Check product life cycles and replacement timing. A long-lived industrial part may have slower unit growth but more stable demand than a rapidly replaced consumer device.

Map end markets and concentration

Read the revenue table and management discussion together. For onsemi, the 2025 filing identifies automotive as 51% of revenue, industrial as 28%, and other markets as 21%. The filing defines “other” to include AI data center, computing, consumer, networking, communications, and other markets. Those percentages describe onsemi’s own 2025 mix, not the semiconductor industry as a whole.

The same filing identifies automotive and industrial as the largest 2025 end markets and describes development priorities in power management for AI data centers, vehicle electrification, energy systems, and sensing. Treat those priorities as management’s strategy and expectations, not independent proof that the markets will meet a forecast. Ask what portion is already shipping, what is covered by design wins, and what still depends on customer qualification.

For every company, record the largest customers or distributors when disclosed, the percentage of revenue represented by them, and whether a single customer or application can change the quarter. A broad catalog does not eliminate concentration if a few customers account for most demand in the highest-margin products.

3. Test whether growth is durable

Headline revenue growth is an outcome, not an explanation. Reconcile the change with units, average selling prices, product mix, acquisitions, foreign exchange, and the comparison period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate the sources of growth

  • Organic volume: More units shipped to existing or new customers. Verify with end-market demand, capacity, and inventory data.
  • Price and mix: Higher prices or a shift toward richer products can lift revenue without equivalent unit growth.
  • Acquisitions: Acquired revenue may expand the business but brings integration, purchase-accounting, and debt questions.
  • Currency: Reported growth can differ materially from constant-currency growth.
  • Recovery effects: A company emerging from an inventory correction can post a high percentage increase from a depressed base.
  • Market-share gains: Design wins and production ramps may create durable growth, but a design win is not the same as recognized revenue.

Read several years of revenue and segment data, then compare the pattern with inventory, orders, and capacity. A single strong quarter may reflect customer restocking; a multi-year gain across products and customers is stronger evidence of a durable franchise.

Put company growth in market context

STMicroelectronics reported WSTS figures stating that semiconductor industry revenue increased approximately 26% year over year to an approximately $792 billion total addressable market, while the serviceable addressable market increased approximately 15% to approximately $279 billion. These are differently scoped market measures reported in a company filing, not STMicroelectronics’ revenue growth and not a forward forecast. Preserve the attribution and definitions when using them.

Comparing a company’s growth with the relevant market measure can reveal share gains or losses, but only after matching geography, product scope, period, and currency. Do not compare a narrow serviceable market with a company’s entire revenue without adjusting the denominator.

4. Compare margins, cash generation, and reinvestment

Profitability should be read alongside the investment needed to produce it. For each company, collect at least three to five years of revenue, gross margin, operating margin, research and development, capital expenditure, depreciation, operating cash flow, free cash flow, debt, and working-capital changes. A longer period is especially important for cyclical manufacturers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Metric What it can reveal Important qualification
Gross margin Product mix, pricing, manufacturing efficiency, and differentiation. Can rise temporarily with favorable mix or high factory utilization and fall during a correction.
Operating margin How well gross profit covers research, selling, and administrative costs. Separate recurring operating costs from restructuring, acquisition, or impairment charges.
Research and development Investment in future products, process technology, and design wins. A high percentage may reflect a small current revenue base; a low percentage is not automatically efficient.
Capital expenditure Cash required for fabs, tools, facilities, and capacity expansion. Timing is lumpy. A year of heavy investment can depress free cash flow before the capacity contributes revenue.
Operating cash flow Cash produced by operations before investment. Working-capital releases can temporarily boost it; inspect receivables, inventory, and payables.
Free cash flow Cash left after capital expenditure, often useful for debt reduction, dividends, or buybacks. Use a through-cycle or normalized view when investment or inventory is unusually high or low.
Net debt and liquidity Ability to fund a downturn and continue development or construction. Include leases, maturities, covenants, and customer advances where material.

Use reported figures with their period attached

Texas Instruments reported 2025 revenue of $17.68 billion, cash flow from operations of $7.15 billion, free cash flow of $2.94 billion, and capital expenditures of $4.55 billion. These are company-reported 2025 results. The relatively large capital-expenditure figure matters when interpreting that year’s free cash flow; it should not be treated as a permanent annual level without reviewing the company’s capacity plan.

Texas Instruments also reported approximately $24 billion of capital expenditure over 2016–2025. That cumulative figure is a company-specific statement, not a benchmark for every integrated manufacturer. Compare it with the revenue and cash generated over the same period and ask whether the spending is replacing capacity, adding strategic capacity, or responding to a temporary shortage.

The company says its preferred long-term progress measure is free-cash-flow-per-share growth. That emphasis can be useful, but calculate the measure yourself from reported cash flow, share count, and capital spending, and test it against a full cycle rather than one year.

Compare owned and outsourced manufacturing fairly

An integrated company may show lower near-term free cash flow because it is building factories, while a fabless company may show stronger cash conversion because fabrication is purchased as an operating cost. That does not prove the fabless model is superior. Compare total economics: gross margin, operating margin, supply commitments, inventory risk, product life, and the return expected on owned capacity. Rambus describes outsourcing manufacturing to reduce capital requirements and retain flexibility; Texas Instruments’ manufacturing strategy involves substantial owned investment. These statements illustrate different choices, not universal outcomes.

5. Understand semiconductor cyclicality

Semiconductor earnings can move sharply as customers adjust inventories, factories add or remove capacity, and new products ramp. The cycle is not identical for every company: automotive, industrial, communications, computing, and consumer demand can turn at different times.

Signals to track

  • Inventory days at the company and, when available, at distributors and customers.
  • Book-to-bill, orders, backlog, cancellations, and lead times where the company discloses them.
  • Factory utilization, wafer starts, test demand, and the timing of capacity additions.
  • Average selling prices and gross-margin movement by segment.
  • Customer commentary about production schedules, qualification, and design-win conversion.
  • Cash flow from working capital, especially a sudden inventory build or release.

Equipment, test, and materials suppliers need a separate cycle analysis. Their revenue is tied to customers’ manufacturing budgets and utilization, so a chipmaker’s strong sales do not automatically mean every supplier will grow at the same rate. Examine order timing, backlog or cancellations when disclosed, service revenue, customer concentration, and announced fab investment. Comparable current order and backlog figures are not established for every supplier, so do not fill gaps with assumptions.

6. Build a peer group that is actually comparable

Start with business model and product economics, then narrow by end market and risk. A useful comparison table includes these axes:

Axis Why it matters Evidence to collect
Manufacturing ownership Determines fixed costs, capacity control, and capital intensity. Owned fabs, foundry dependence, assembly and test partners, capacity commitments.
Product and end-market mix Shapes growth, margins, and cycle timing. Segment revenue, automotive, industrial, computing, communications, consumer, and other shares.
Growth quality Distinguishes durable share gains from a low-base recovery or acquisition. Organic growth, units, pricing, mix, design wins, acquisitions, currency, inventory.
Margins and R&D Shows differentiation and reinvestment burden. Gross margin, operating margin, R&D percentage, and multi-year trends.
Capital intensity and cash Determines how much reported profit becomes distributable cash. Capital expenditure, depreciation, operating cash flow, free cash flow, and working capital.
Concentration Highlights dependence on a customer, supplier, foundry, or application. Largest-customer percentages, distributor exposure, single-source components, foundry share.
Balance-sheet risk Determines resilience during a downturn. Cash, debt, maturities, covenants, leases, and acquisition obligations.
Valuation basis Prevents false precision from mismatched multiples. Date, currency, share class, market capitalization, enterprise value, and trailing, forward, or normalized earnings.

Do not place an equipment supplier beside a fabless processor designer simply because both have high revenue growth. If you need a broad sector screen, use it only to generate candidates, then rebuild the peer set by economics.

7. Compare valuation without false precision

Valuation ratios are prompts for investigation, not rankings. The same multiple can be reasonable for one business and misleading for another.

Measure Formula Best use Main trap
Price-to-earnings share price ÷ earnings per share Comparing profitable companies with similar accounting and cycle positions. Earnings can be near a cyclical peak or trough; options, restructuring, and one-time items can distort EPS.
Enterprise value to EBITDA (equity value + debt − cash) ÷ EBITDA Comparing companies with different debt and cash positions. EBITDA does not deduct the capital expenditure required by a fab or other asset-heavy model.
Price-to-sales equity value ÷ revenue Early-stage or low-profit comparisons when margins are broadly similar. Ignores margin, capital intensity, working capital, and reinvestment differences.
Free-cash-flow yield normalized free cash flow ÷ equity value Businesses with measurable, repeatable cash generation. Recent factory investment or a working-capital swing can make current free cash flow unrepresentative.

Rules for a defensible multiple

  1. Record the exact date and closing share price, currency, exchange, and share class.
  2. Calculate market capitalization from the diluted share count appropriate to the earnings period; explain treatment of options or restricted stock where material.
  3. Calculate enterprise value by stating which debt, leases, preferred interests, and cash items are included.
  4. Label earnings as trailing twelve months, next fiscal year, or normalized. If using estimates, name the source and publication date.
  5. Use the same accounting basis across peers, or explain adjustments.
  6. Compare the multiple with growth, margins, capital intensity, concentration, and balance-sheet risk. A premium may reflect more durable growth or lower risk; a discount may reflect a real structural burden.

No current share prices or trading multiples are established here, so this framework does not support a present claim that any semiconductor stock is cheap or expensive. Refresh the latest filings, reported quarters, market prices, enterprise values, and consensus or normalized earnings assumptions before drawing that conclusion.

Company and sector risks to put beside every valuation

  • Demand and inventory: Customers can reduce orders quickly after overbuilding inventory.
  • Rapid technology change: A product can lose relevance, or a new process can require expensive redesign and qualification.
  • Customer concentration: Losing one account or design win can affect revenue and factory utilization.
  • Foundry and supplier dependence: Outsourcing reduces owned assets but can create allocation, pricing, and disruption risk.
  • Capacity and utilization: New factories add depreciation and fixed costs before demand is proven.
  • Geopolitical and trade exposure: Export controls, tariffs, sanctions, and regional concentration can change addressable markets or supply routes.
  • Balance-sheet strain: Debt-funded expansion can reduce flexibility when the cycle turns.

Risk disclosures describe scenarios management considers material; they do not predict whether or when those events will occur. Compare the company’s stated risks with its actual geographic footprint, customer mix, suppliers, cash, debt maturities, and investment commitments.

A repeatable worksheet and decision process

Use one worksheet per company and one comparison sheet for the peer group. Keep reported figures, your adjustments, and market-data inputs in separate columns so a later refresh does not hide an assumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Read the latest annual filing first. Capture business segments, manufacturing ownership, end-market definitions, customer and supplier concentration, risk factors, and the capital plan.
  2. Build a five-year operating history. Enter revenue, gross margin, operating margin, R&D, capital expenditure, depreciation, operating cash flow, free cash flow, inventory, receivables, debt, and diluted shares.
  3. Explain each major change. Add notes for acquisitions, divestitures, pricing, currency, product mix, inventory corrections, factory starts, and restructuring charges.
  4. Map the cycle. Mark peak, trough, and recovery years. Calculate margins and cash conversion across the whole period, not just the latest quarter.
  5. Construct a peer set by economics. Exclude companies whose manufacturing model, end markets, or balance-sheet risk make the multiple incomparable.
  6. Refresh market data on one date. Collect share prices, share counts, debt, cash, enterprise value, and the earnings estimates or normalized assumptions used in every ratio.
  7. Write the investment case and the failure case. For the case to work, specify the growth driver, margin or cash-flow outcome, and valuation assumption. For the failure case, specify what happens if demand, utilization, pricing, capacity, or a key customer disappoints.
  8. Set a monitoring list. Choose the quarterly figures that would confirm or weaken the thesis: orders, inventory, utilization, design-win conversion, capital spending, free cash flow, and concentration.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Grouping every chip company together: This hides the difference between selling chips, making chips, and selling the tools used to make them.
  • Using revenue growth alone: A small-base recovery, acquisition, price increase, or inventory restocking may not repeat.
  • Ignoring capital expenditure: Accounting earnings can look strong while cash is committed to factories and equipment.
  • Comparing peak and trough earnings: The resulting P/E ranking can reverse when the cycle normalizes.
  • Treating management targets as market facts: Strategic priorities and expected high-growth applications still require design wins, production, and customer demand.
  • Mixing market definitions: A total addressable market and a serviceable market have different scopes and cannot be used interchangeably.
  • Leaving the valuation date unstated: Multiples change with price, debt, cash, share count, and earnings estimates.
  • Assuming outsourcing removes risk: It changes fixed-cost exposure but introduces dependence on foundries, packaging, testing, and allocation.

Bottom line: compare economics first, multiples last

A sound semiconductor-stock comparison begins with the value-chain role and manufacturing model, not the ticker symbol. Map products and end markets, test the source and durability of growth, measure margins and free cash flow against the capital required, and examine concentration and cycle exposure. Only then compare valuation with a peer group that shares those characteristics and with clearly dated, consistently defined earnings assumptions. This process will not predict every semiconductor cycle, but it will prevent a valuation shortcut from disguising a fundamentally different business.
