Compare the APY you can actually earn on your balance, then weigh access, rate variability, fees, minimums and other account rules. A savings account or money market deposit account generally keeps money accessible under the institution’s terms; a certificate of deposit (CD) ties it to a specified term, with an early-withdrawal penalty possible. The best fit depends on when you may need the money—not just which offer displays the highest APY.
Start with the trade-off: access versus commitment
An APY comparison is useful only when the offers are evaluated at the same balance and under their actual conditions. A headline rate may depend on a minimum balance, a particular balance tier or other account requirements. Fees can also reduce the return you keep.

The first question is not simply which account has the highest advertised APY. It is when you might need the money, how easily you need to reach it, and what conditions you can meet in exchange for the quoted rate. Money that may be needed at an uncertain time is different from money you can leave untouched until a known date. Liquidity—the ability to access the funds under the account’s terms—has value even if it is not reflected in the headline APY.

That makes a side-by-side comparison more useful than choosing from a short list of APYs. For each offer, compare the rate that applies to your balance, how the account lets you access funds, what fees and minimums apply, whether the rate can change, and—if it is a CD—what happens before and at maturity. The product disclosure, not the category name or a promotional summary, is the place to confirm those details.

These are category-level distinctions, not guarantees about every product. The provider’s current terms control. A money market deposit account is a bank or credit-union deposit account; it is not the same thing as a money market mutual fund. This comparison concerns deposit accounts, not mutual funds.
Calculate the return you can actually keep
Verify the APY at your balance
Read the rate disclosure for the balance you plan to deposit. If an account uses tiers, determine which tier applies and whether the entire balance earns that tier’s rate or the account uses another disclosed method. Check minimums to open the account and to qualify for the advertised APY. Regulation DD disclosures address applicable rates and minimum-balance requirements, but the specific disclosure is what tells you how a particular offer works. CFPB Regulation DD account disclosures
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not assume that a rate shown in an advertisement applies to every deposit size. One offer may have a minimum opening deposit, another may require a certain balance to earn its stated APY, and a tiered offer may apply different terms at different balances. Record the exact balance you are comparing and the rate disclosure that applies to it. If the disclosure does not make the applicable tier or rate condition clear, ask the institution to explain it before treating the advertised figure as your expected return.
Compare like with like. For a savings account and a money market deposit account, note the APY available at your planned balance and whether the rate is variable. For a CD, compare the APY for the specific term you are considering, not a rate advertised for a different maturity. A rate for one CD term does not establish what another term will pay. No current market APY table or rate ranking is published here, so a live comparison must come from dated, provider-specific disclosures.
Account for fees and conditions
Identify monthly or other recurring fees, and note any balance requirement to avoid them. If a rate depends on a condition, include that condition in your comparison. A nominally higher APY may not be the better choice if you cannot meet its requirements or if fees offset the difference.

Make a small comparison record for each candidate: institution and product name, date checked, deposit amount, APY for that amount, minimum to open, minimum needed to earn the rate, fees, and any other conditions. This helps prevent comparing one product’s best-case advertised rate with another product’s actual rate at your balance. It also gives you a concrete list of questions to resolve from the account disclosure or agreement.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a CD, add the minimum deposit, exact term, maturity date, and early-withdrawal penalty. The penalty is part of the cost of choosing a time commitment, not a footnote to review only if you later need the money. For a money market deposit account, include the transaction limits and access features you would actually use. A feature that matters to you may be more valuable than a small APY difference; a restriction that conflicts with your needs may make an otherwise attractive rate impractical.
Use a dated comparison
Rates and terms can change. Record the date you checked each offer, the balance used for the comparison, the quoted APY and the institution’s conditions. The sources cited here do not establish a current market APY or a rate ranking, so do not treat any rate as current without checking the institution’s dated disclosure.
A date is useful because it distinguishes what you verified from what may change later. When you are ready to open an account, check the rate and terms again rather than relying on a saved comparison alone. This matters particularly for a variable-rate deposit account or for a CD renewal: the terms available later may differ from the terms you reviewed today.
Evaluate access before choosing a higher rate
Think about whether you might need the money unexpectedly or on a known date. Savings accounts are designed for setting money aside while retaining access, subject to their terms. A money market deposit account may offer checks or other access features, but availability, transaction limits and minimums depend on the institution and account. Read those rules rather than assuming that an account name guarantees a particular feature. CFPB account options handout
For an accessible account, check the permitted ways to withdraw or use the funds and how quickly those methods work for your needs. For a money market deposit account, verify whether checks or other access methods are actually offered, and read the transaction limits. Do not treat a possible feature as a guaranteed feature. Account terms differ, and a general account description cannot tell you what a particular institution permits.

For a CD, compare the maturity date with the date you expect to need the funds. CFPB describes a CD as a savings product with a specified period, generally requiring the money to remain deposited to avoid penalties. The precise penalty is contract-specific, so check how it is calculated and whether early access could cost some of the interest or principal under the stated terms. CFPB key terms
Ask yourself whether the date you expect to need the money is firm or only an estimate. If it could be needed sooner, the CD’s commitment and penalty deserve particular attention. A higher APY does not remove that restriction. Conversely, if the funds can remain in the account through a known maturity date, a CD may be worth comparing on its exact term and conditions. This is a comparison framework, not a claim that one type of account always pays more or suits everyone better.
Check CD rate features and maturity rules
Fixed, variable and callable rates are not interchangeable
A fixed-rate CD holds its stated rate through its term subject to the contract. A variable-rate CD can change under the issuer’s rules, while a callable CD may be ended early by the institution. Check the contract for how a variable rate is determined and when it can change, or for the circumstances and timing under which a CD can be called. A higher advertised rate alone does not establish that either feature is a good fit. CFPB guidance on CD rates
When comparing a fixed-rate CD with a variable-rate CD, first confirm which one you are looking at. The word “CD” alone does not answer whether the rate is fixed for the full term. For a variable-rate product, the account’s rules explain how and when the rate may change. For a callable product, find out what the contract says about the institution ending it early. Those features can change how a headline APY should be understood, so include them in your notes rather than comparing the advertised number by itself.
CFPB’s guidance addresses the question of what a consumer can do if the interest rate offered for CDs seems low. For this comparison, the practical response supported by the available information is to check other terms and offers—such as the APY for a different exact term or a different provider—without assuming a rate is guaranteed or that a particular product feature solves the concern. Compare the specific contract, and do not infer a market-wide ranking from one offer.
Find out what happens when the CD matures
Read the maturity and renewal terms before opening the CD. It may renew automatically, and a renewal rate is not guaranteed to match the rate available when you first opened it. CFPB says a bank or credit union must send written notice before maturity describing whether the CD will renew. Check the notice and the account terms for the maturity date, any grace period and the steps and deadline for withdrawing funds or changing the renewal choice. CFPB CD rollover guidance

Do not wait until after the maturity date to find out whether a CD renews. Before opening it, learn whether renewal is automatic, when the institution sends its notice, and what choices and deadlines apply. At maturity, the rate for a renewal is not promised to equal the rate on the original CD. Review the notice and current terms rather than assuming the original APY will continue.

The end of the term is part of the comparison because it affects both access and the next decision. Note the maturity date, any grace period, how to give instructions, and what the institution says happens if you take no action. These details help you compare the CD’s full commitment with an account that has no defined maturity in the cited general guidance. For savings and money market deposit accounts, confirm the account rules as well; do not assume that a general description supplies every term.

- Set the time horizon. Decide whether you may need the funds at an uncertain time or can leave them untouched until a known date. Be specific about the date if you know it, and consider whether it could change.
- Choose acceptable access rules. For money you may need sooner, compare savings and money market deposit accounts by withdrawal methods, transaction limits and any relevant minimums. For money you can commit, include CDs whose maturity dates fit your timeline.
- Compare the APY for your actual balance. Check the applicable balance tier, minimums and whether the rate can change. For a CD, use the APY for the exact term and note whether the rate is fixed, variable or callable.
- Subtract the effect of account terms. Check fees and requirements that could reduce what you keep. For CDs, include the early-withdrawal penalty in your decision about whether the commitment is acceptable.
- Review the endpoint and safety details. For CDs, check renewal and maturity instructions. For any deposit account, verify the institution and deposit-insurance treatment for your ownership category before placing funds.
- Recheck before opening. Rates and account terms can change, so confirm the current provider disclosure and agreement on the date you are ready to act.
This sequence keeps the decision focused on the factors that can alter the practical value of the APY. It does not require choosing an account type in advance. If access is essential, eliminate offers whose limits or commitment do not fit. If a known date makes a CD plausible, compare its exact term, penalty, rate type, and maturity instructions. Then compare the APY at your balance among the options that meet your needs.
Keep deposit insurance in perspective
A Spring 2023 CFPB educational handout states a $250,000 coverage ceiling for almost all deposits through the FDIC or NCUA. That is a general educational figure, not a determination of coverage for a particular person’s accounts. Confirm current rules, the institution’s status and the applicable ownership category for your balance. Deposit insurance is a safety check; it does not replace comparing APY, access and account terms. CFPB account options handout
Use that figure with care: it is identified in the handout as a general coverage ceiling for almost all deposits, not as a personalized calculation. The handout does not determine how a particular person’s accounts are covered. Before placing money, check current official coverage rules, confirm the institution’s status, and account for the ownership category that applies. Do not use the number as a substitute for verifying your own circumstances.

Common comparison mistakes to avoid
- Choosing from the headline APY alone. The rate may be tied to a balance tier, minimum or other condition. Verify the APY that applies to the amount you will deposit.
- Comparing different balances or terms. Keep the deposit amount consistent across account offers, and compare a CD with the exact term you are considering.
- Ignoring how access works. A money market deposit account may provide checks or other access, but you need to verify the feature and its limits. A CD’s term and early-withdrawal penalty matter if you could need the money sooner.
- Assuming a CD rate or renewal lasts unchanged. Variable rates can change under the issuer’s rules, callable CDs may be ended early by the institution, and renewal rates are not guaranteed to match the original rate.
- Treating account labels as full disclosures. Savings, money market deposit account and CD are useful categories, but product conditions vary. Read the provider’s current disclosure and agreement.
- Mixing up a deposit account and a mutual fund. This article addresses a money market deposit account at a bank or credit union, not a money market mutual fund.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the highest APY always the best account?
No. Compare the APY available at your actual balance, along with minimums, fees, rate variability, access rules and any CD commitment or penalty. A higher advertised number may depend on conditions you cannot meet or may not fit your need for access.
What should I compare between a savings account and a money market account?
Compare the APY at your balance, whether the rate can change, minimums, fees, and how you can access the money. For a money market deposit account, check whether checks or other access features are offered and read its transaction limits. Terms vary by institution.
Is a money market deposit account the same as a money market mutual fund?
No. This comparison is about money market deposit accounts offered by banks or credit unions. A money market mutual fund is a different product and is outside the scope of this comparison.

What should I check before putting money in a CD?
Check the APY for the exact term, whether the rate is fixed, variable or callable, the minimum deposit, maturity date and early-withdrawal penalty. Also read the renewal rules, grace period and instructions for what to do at maturity.
Can a CD renew at a different rate?
Yes. A CD may renew automatically, and the renewal rate is not guaranteed to match the rate available when you opened it. CFPB says the bank or credit union must send written notice before maturity describing whether it will renew. Review the notice, current terms and any deadlines.
How can I compare a CD if I might need the money early?
Compare the maturity date with when you may need the funds, and read the exact early-withdrawal penalty and how it is calculated. If the need could arise before maturity, weigh that restriction against the access terms of savings or money market deposit accounts.
What does the $250,000 deposit-insurance figure mean?
The CFPB’s Spring 2023 educational handout describes $250,000 as the coverage ceiling for almost all deposits through FDIC or NCUA. It is not an account-specific coverage determination. Verify current rules, the institution’s status and your ownership category.
Are there current APY rankings in this comparison?
No. The cited sources do not provide a live market APY table or rate ranking. Check each provider’s current, dated disclosure for the APY and terms that apply to your balance.
The Bottom Line
Compare the APY at your balance, but make the decision around the whole account: rate conditions, fees, minimums and access. A money market deposit account may be worth checking when its access features fit your needs; a CD belongs in the comparison when you can accept its term and penalty rules. Verify current provider disclosures, and check CD maturity and renewal terms before committing.
