To compare Uber, Lyft, or other ride-hailing work fairly, use the same market, schedule, time definition, and vehicle-cost method for each platform. Add ride pay, tips, and incentives; subtract platform deductions and the vehicle costs attributable to the work. Then calculate net earnings per engaged hour, per total work hour—including waiting—and per work mile. A platform’s gross payout or advertised fee share alone cannot tell you which option leaves you with more.
What counts as earnings after expenses?
Start with the money paid to you, not the rider’s total charge. Separate ride pay from tips, bonuses, guarantees, and adjustments. Then account for platform deductions and operating costs attributable to your driving. A useful operating measure is:
Net operating earnings = ride pay + tips + incentives and adjustments − platform deductions − attributable operating costs
This is an operating comparison, not necessarily taxable income or take-home pay after income and self-employment taxes. Keep taxes separate unless you are deliberately calculating an after-tax result with a consistent method.

Do not treat the rider fare gap as one commission
The difference between what a rider pays and what a driver receives can include more than a platform service fee. Uber says the gap may reflect items such as booking fees, commercial insurance, and operational expenses, and explains that its service fee is deducted from gross driver earnings (Uber’s explanation of the service fee). Its Earnings Hub also shows drivers the amount Uber kept from Rider Fares; Uber distinguishes that amount from third-party expenses and rider promotions (Uber’s weekly amount-kept guidance).
Use the categories on your own weekly statement or app rather than assuming every difference is platform revenue. Lyft’s pay display also varies by market: its rate cards apply where Upfront Pay is unavailable, and its driver information describes tips and bonuses such as Ride Streaks (Lyft’s driver pay overview).
Put incentives on their own line
Record each bonus, guarantee, or other incentive separately, including its qualifying dates and conditions. A streak or guarantee can materially change one week’s result, but it may not be offered again or be available to every driver. Compare both the result including incentives and, when useful, the result without one-time incentives so you can see how much the week depended on them.
Build a comparison from comparable shifts or weeks
Use the same time blocks and geographic area for each platform. Compare several similar periods rather than relying on one unusually busy shift, a large event, severe weather, or a one-off promotion. Record the inputs below for each platform and period.

- Platform, city or market, date range, and days and hours worked.
- Ride pay or payout, tips, each incentive or guarantee, and adjustments.
- Platform service fees and separately identified external fees, insurance, or taxes shown in statements.
- Total work miles, including a consistent decision about pickup, repositioning, and other app-on driving.
- Fuel cost, using either actual fuel records or the same consistently applied estimate.
- Maintenance, repairs, tires, insurance allocation, vehicle use or depreciation, and other relevant business costs, using a consistent method.
- Engaged hours and total time available for work; if practical, track waiting and repositioning separately.
Keep the method fixed across platforms. If one statement bundles categories or does not identify an amount, do not invent a breakdown; note what the statement does and does not show.
Calculate three rates, not just one
Net per engaged hour
Divide net operating earnings by the hours during which you were engaged in rides, using the platform’s definition or your own consistent trip-time records. This shows how well paid the active portion of work was, but it excludes some unpaid time spent waiting or repositioning.
Lyft reported a median of $23.46 net earnings per engaged hour in its 2024 analysis. That is Lyft’s analysis, not a guaranteed rate: its method focuses on marginal costs and engaged time, and Lyft cautions that individual earnings and costs vary (Lyft’s 2024 driver earnings analysis). Do not compare this figure directly with an all-hours rate or with a result calculated using a different cost method.
Net per total work hour
Divide net operating earnings by all hours committed to the work, including time available for rides when you are not engaged. State exactly what counts: for example, app-on availability, time waiting between trips, and time spent repositioning. This is the more useful rate for understanding what the work returned for your schedule. Do not compare one platform’s engaged-hour figure with another platform’s all-online-hour figure.

Net per work mile
Divide net operating earnings by miles attributable to the work. Specify whether the denominator includes only passenger-trip miles or also pickup, repositioning, and other app-on miles. A consistent work-mile measure helps show how vehicle efficiency and trip mix affect the result; it does not replace the hourly rates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Count vehicle costs consistently
Fuel is only one operating cost. Include the costs that apply to your vehicle and work, such as maintenance, repairs, tires, insurance allocation, and vehicle use or depreciation. Choose a reasonable method and apply it to both platforms. A published average is context, not a personal cost quote.
The UC Berkeley Labor Center’s 2024 report cites an estimate of 63.1 cents per mile in average driver expenses over all hours worked, based on driver survey data in a companion expense report (UC Berkeley Labor Center report). Its study context and cost assumptions differ from Lyft’s engaged-time analysis, so the figure should not be substituted for your own vehicle costs or treated as directly comparable to the Lyft hourly figure.
For an economic comparison, do not subtract both your actual vehicle costs and an IRS standard-mileage deduction as if they were separate expenses. The IRS mileage rate is a tax deduction method, not a direct measurement of your personal operating cost. Uber’s U.S. tax information describes annual tax summaries, business miles, gross earnings reporting, and vehicle deduction methods; for the 2025 tax year, it lists the IRS standard mileage rate as 72.5 cents per mile (Uber’s U.S. tax information). Check the applicable tax-year rules and method before filing.

Check statements and local terms before drawing a conclusion
Use each platform’s records to verify what was paid and deducted, then confirm the current terms for your market. Lyft’s U.S. Annual Summary includes yearly earnings and related expenses such as platform and Express Pay fees; Lyft also says it cannot verify a driver’s income because drivers are independent contractors (Lyft’s U.S. tax information).
Lyft’s February 2024 announcement described a commitment that drivers would receive at least 70% of rider payments after external fees each week, subject to Lyft’s terms. Its nationwide expansion announcement also reported an estimated net figure based on Lyft’s own cost assumptions, not a universal driver outcome. A separate Lyft announcement published in 2026 describes a monthly fee cap starting May 1 and says Lyft’s fee averages approximately 14% of passenger ride payments. These are Lyft statements, and their scope, effective dates, and market applicability matter; verify the current terms before relying on them (Lyft’s driver pay commitment announcements). A fee cap, share commitment, or average fee is not the same as earnings after your vehicle costs.
Use a worksheet to compare the result
| Measure | Calculation | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Net operating earnings | Ride pay + tips + incentives and adjustments − platform deductions − attributable operating costs | Which fees and vehicle costs are included; whether taxes are excluded |
| Net per engaged hour | Net operating earnings ÷ engaged hours | How engaged time is defined |
| Net per total work hour | Net operating earnings ÷ all hours committed | Whether waiting, repositioning, and app-on availability count |
| Net per work mile | Net operating earnings ÷ work miles | Whether pickup and repositioning miles count |
For each platform, keep the schedule, geography, mileage boundaries, incentive treatment, and vehicle-cost method aligned. Compare the rates as separate measures rather than collapsing them into a single winner: a platform may perform better per engaged hour yet worse per total hour or work mile. The better option for an individual driver depends on local terms, utilization, trip mix, schedule, vehicle, fuel economy, and incentive eligibility; the available published figures do not establish a universal winner.
