Compare Nifty 50 companies by first checking their index membership and business sector, then assessing each against relevant peers on operating performance, growth, resilience, valuation and risk. HDFC Bank, HCL Technologies and Max Healthcare do not share the same economics, so a single cross-sector ratio cannot reliably rank them. Also verify Max Healthcare’s index status: the dated materials cited here establish its place in the Nifty500 Healthcare index, not its membership in the Nifty 50.
What does the Nifty 50 tell you—and what does it not?
NSE Indices describes the Nifty 50 as a 50-stock index calculated using free-float market capitalisation. It represented about 53.73% of NSE-listed free-float market capitalisation as of March 30, 2026. That makes it a broad-market benchmark, but index inclusion or weight is not a verdict on a company’s quality, fair value or suitability for an individual investor.
Keep index-level statistics separate from company analysis. The May 29, 2026 Nifty 50 factsheet reported an index P/E of 20.27, P/B of 3.21 and dividend yield of 1.35%. Those are dated aggregate figures for the index, not valuations or forecasts for HDFC Bank, HCL Technologies or any other constituent.
Membership and weights change. In the NSE Indices constituent snapshot dated February 27, 2026, HDFC Bank had an 11.83% Nifty 50 weight and HCL Technologies a 1.28% weight. Do not present those as current weights without checking a newer official constituent file. NSE Indices says the index is reviewed semi-annually, with ad-hoc reconstitution also possible in specified circumstances.

Before comparing results, decide whether you mean today’s constituents or a historical group. Check the official Nifty 50 constituent list for the date you are analysing, then note the reporting period for each company figure. A company result for one quarter should not be set beside another company’s full-year result as if the periods matched.
The available dated NSE materials identify HDFC Bank as a financial-services company and HCL Technologies as an information-technology company. Max Healthcare is a healthcare operator. The April 30, 2026 Nifty500 Healthcare factsheet listed Max Healthcare with a 6.14% weight in that sector index; this is not a Nifty 50 weight and does not by itself establish Nifty 50 membership. If your comparison is specifically among Nifty 50 constituents, verify Max Healthcare’s membership against the constituent list for your chosen date.
Use different operating tests for each business
Start with business performance, not valuation multiples. Compare each company with competitors that have similar operating models, and use the company’s own definitions in its filings. The measures below are useful questions to investigate, not a claim that every issuer reports every item in the same way.
| Company and sector | Operating questions to compare | Resilience questions |
|---|---|---|
| HDFC Bank — banking | How quickly are loans and deposits growing? What is the funding mix? How are profitability, asset quality and credit costs changing? | What do disclosures show about capital strength, credit exposures and the ability to manage funding and credit risks? |
| HCL Technologies — IT services and products | What is revenue growth in constant currency? How are margins, services and products mix, client demand and management outlook moving? | How much cash is generated, and what do management’s outlook and risk disclosures say about demand and business exposure? |
| Max Healthcare — hospitals and healthcare | What are operating and planned capacity, occupancy or utilisation where reported, and revenue and profitability trends? | What expansion commitments, leverage and cash generation are disclosed, and how could they affect the business? |
For each measure, record the period, unit, definition and whether it is a reported result or management guidance. This avoids treating a forecast as an achieved outcome or confusing differently defined measures.

Read primary filings for performance, risks and capital decisions
Use the latest issuer results and investor materials for recent performance, then read the annual report for fuller context. The relevant official investor pages provide these materials:
- HDFC Bank: its results page lists Q1 FY2027 results, earnings-call materials and a presentation dated July 2026; its annual-reports page lists the FY2025–26 integrated report.
- HCL Technologies (HCLTech): its investor page links to the FY2025–26 annual report and investor materials. The company reports consolidated revenue of US$14.8 billion for the 12 months ending June 2026; keep that stated period and currency attached to the figure.
- Max Healthcare: its investor page lists FY2025–26 integrated annual reports, while its stock-exchange submissions include FY2025–26 results, earnings presentations and related disclosures.
In the annual report, examine management discussion, risk factors, accounting notes, capital allocation and governance disclosures alongside the recent results. Separate stated assumptions and guidance from realised performance. A bank’s credit and capital exposures, an IT company’s demand and delivery risks, and a hospital operator’s capacity expansion and leverage cannot be reduced to one common resilience ratio.

A valuation multiple is meaningful only when its share price date, financial period and calculation are clear. For a company-level comparison, use share prices from the same stated date and financial data from aligned periods, then compare businesses with relevant peers and with their own history. Select measures that fit the business rather than applying one ratio to all three sectors.
- Write down the price observation date and whether the financial figure is quarterly, annual, trailing or forecast.
- Use the same accounting basis and company definition wherever possible; flag differences rather than silently treating measures as equivalent.
- Compare a bank with banking peers, an IT services business with comparable technology firms, and a hospital operator with relevant healthcare peers.
- Keep dividends and returns distinct from valuation. If you discuss performance, state the exact period and whether the figure is a price return or a total return.
The May 29, 2026 Nifty 50 P/E, P/B and dividend yield are useful only as dated index context. They cannot establish that an individual constituent is cheap or expensive. No synchronized set of company-specific valuation multiples or share prices is established here, so a league table of those three companies would risk mixing unlike periods or inputs.

Turn the comparison into a repeatable decision process
- Set the universe and date. Check the official NSE Indices constituent file for the chosen date; identify any non-constituent being used as a sector comparison.
- Choose appropriate peers. Compare each company within its sector and business model before making any cross-sector observations.
- Collect matched periods. Use the latest results and presentations for each issuer, and record fiscal period, units and metric definitions beside every figure.
- Assess operations and resilience. Use the sector-specific questions above, then review annual-report risks, accounting disclosures, capital allocation and governance.
- Calculate valuation with dated inputs. Align the share-price date and financial period, and state the peer set and method so another reader can reproduce the comparison.
- Write a conclusion with limits. Distinguish observed results from guidance, explain which differences are business-model effects, and avoid turning benchmark weight or index valuation into a company recommendation.
When an index is the more relevant benchmark
NSE Indices says the Nifty 50 can be used to benchmark portfolios and as the basis for index funds, ETFs and structured products. That provides context for readers comparing individual-company research with diversified index exposure; it does not establish that a particular fund or product is appropriate for any individual. The choice depends on the reader’s circumstances and should not be inferred from the index’s composition alone.
