To find out whether pickup or delivery costs less, build the same basket in both checkout options at the same retailer, using your actual address, time slot and membership status. Compare the item prices and every mandatory charge in the checkout breakdown; keep an optional tip separate. There is no single fee structure across grocery services, so the total shown for your specific order is the useful comparison.
Compare the same order under the same conditions
A delivery fee on one order is not a fair comparison with a pickup total for a different basket or time slot. Prices, promotions, order eligibility and fees can vary with the items and fulfillment details. Use this checklist before deciding:

- Build one basket. Use the same retailer, products and quantities for pickup and delivery. Check substitutions, since a changed item or cart can affect the final cost.
- Set the delivery details. Use your actual delivery address and compare the slot you would realistically choose. Delivery charges can vary by retailer, order total or time window; faster service may add a separate charge.
- Apply your real membership status. Sign in or otherwise select the membership you actually have. Count a waiver or discount only if the current checkout applies it to this order.
- Read every mandatory line. Compare item prices and promotions, pickup or delivery charges, service or convenience fees, minimum-order or small-basket fees, priority or speed charges, taxes, deposits and bag charges where applicable.
- Keep tips separate. A tip is optional and should not be included in the mandatory-fee subtotal. Instacart says its service fee is not a tip; the tip goes to the shopper.
- Compare the final totals. Check the breakdown again immediately before submitting. Cart edits, substitutions, refunds or promotions can change what you pay.
What to look for in the checkout breakdown
Service names are not always intuitive, and a waived delivery charge does not necessarily mean the order has no fees. Compare both the mandatory-fee subtotal and the complete order total, so you can see whether a difference comes from item pricing, a fee or an eligibility condition.

- Item prices: Compare the same products and quantities, including discounts actually applied to the order.
- Fulfillment charges: Look for delivery or pickup charges and any separate service, convenience or regulatory fees.
- Order conditions: Check for a minimum spend, small-order charge, or restrictions tied to a delivery slot.
- Speed and timing: A priority option or short delivery window may cost extra even when a standard delivery benefit applies.
- Local additions: Review taxes, bottle deposits and bag charges shown for your location and order.
- Optional tip: Record it separately if you want to compare the full amount you might pay, but do not treat it as a mandatory fee.
For a useful decision, consider convenience separately from price. The checkout can show the dollar difference; whether that difference is worth the time saved or the trip avoided depends on your circumstances.

Why “free delivery” may not mean a fee-free order
A delivery-fee waiver addresses one possible charge, not necessarily all charges. Instacart says eligible Instacart+ orders can have a $0 delivery fee while service fees still apply. It says delivery charges vary by retailer, delivery window and order total, and service fees vary by location and the number and types of items in the cart. Its help page also describes possible priority, long-distance, convenience, regulatory, tax, bottle-deposit and bag charges. Check the actual order breakdown rather than relying on a membership headline.
Pickup is not automatically free of every charge, either. Instacart says its pickup orders have no Instacart service fee, while noting that certain retailers may charge a pickup fee. In either case, verify the retailer-specific checkout total.

These examples explain why checking your own cart matters; they are not directly comparable quoted prices. The services have different eligibility rules and conditions, and local availability and charges may differ. When the totals change
The amount you first compare may not be the amount ultimately charged. Instacart says order changes can affect the service-fee total and final cost. Before placing the order, review the latest cart after any edits or substitution choices. After fulfillment, use the final receipt to confirm what was charged; Kroger says its service charge or delivery fee is shown there.

Fees, membership terms, taxes and service availability can change and vary by location. A current checkout for your address and basket is more relevant than a general fee description or an old screenshot.
