To find the cheapest nearby fuel, compare stations selling the same grade, check when each price was updated and whether you qualify for the displayed price, then weigh the savings against the distance and route. The right price finder depends on where you are: the United Kingdom, United States and Australia have different data sources and coverage.
How to compare nearby fuel prices
- Choose the area. Search using your device location for nearby stations, or enter a city, postcode or ZIP code to compare around home, work or a planned route. If results seem incomplete, clear brand, distance, amenity or payment filters and check the map. GasBuddy says its US app can sort nearby stations by price, distance or both; its web results may not be sorted the same way. GasBuddy explains its search options and filters.
- Match the fuel grade and terms. Compare the grade you actually need, such as regular unleaded or premium. Check whether a price requires cash, a particular payment method, loyalty membership or another offer. GasBuddy documents a cash-versus-credit display for some US stations; the listed price may not be the price you can pay.
- Check the price age. Look for a visible timestamp or an explanation of the service’s update cadence. A recent listing is more useful than an undated number, but it is still worth confirming the price on the sign or pump when you arrive.
- Compare the route as well as the unit price. A station with a lower price may require a detour. Consider the route you would actually drive and, where available, use a trip fuel-cost calculator rather than comparing only cents per gallon or pence per litre.
- Verify the price at the station. Check the forecourt sign and pump before filling up. If the advertised or app price differs from what you are charged, keep the station details, date and time, and evidence such as a photo of the sign or pump or a receipt. UK drivers can report mismatches to the government’s Fuel Finder issue-reporting service.
Which price finder should you use?
Use a station-level finder for a nearby purchase. National or regional averages can help explain broader price trends, but they do not identify the cheapest pump near you. Data sources and station coverage vary, so treat a listing as a comparison lead—not a guarantee of the price at the pump.
United Kingdom
The government’s Fuel Finder makes station prices by fuel type, forecourt address, operator or brand, amenities, opening hours and update timestamps available to third-party services. The government says price changes are published within 30 minutes. Services named in its factsheet include Confused.com, DriveScore, Fuel Finder UK, Fuel Spy, MoneySuperMarket, MotorMouth, PetrolPrices.com and RAC Fuel Watch; availability and coverage can change, so check which service works in your area. See the UK Government’s Fuel Finder factsheet for the scheme details and named services.
The government estimates average annual savings of £40 for households that own a car from Fuel Finder. That is a 2026 government estimate, not a guaranteed saving for an individual household. Fuel Finder data is also a useful basis for comparing listings, but you should still check the price and any conditions at the forecourt.

United States
GasBuddy supports searches around your device or by city or ZIP code, and its app can sort results by price, distance or both. Some station listings show cash and credit prices. Filters and search conditions can hide stations, including some club locations, so clear filters or inspect the map if an expected station is missing. See GasBuddy’s search guidance.
AAA offers a gas price finder and a trip gas-cost calculator. AAA says its finder prices are updated daily, a different cadence from the UK Fuel Finder scheme. The U.S. Energy Information Administration provides broad market data, not station prices by county or ZIP code; use a local finder to choose a station. See the EIA’s explanation of its gasoline price data.

Australia
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) says fuel-price apps draw on state and territory transparency-scheme data in most jurisdictions, with some user-submitted prices in Victoria. Retailer apps may show only that retailer’s stations, although some also display loyalty or price-lock offers. Check the app’s station coverage, fuel grade, price age and offer conditions.
The ACCC says Google Maps displays a notice when a listed price is more than 24 hours old, but it could not confirm the price sources used by Google Maps or Waze. Some navigation apps can show fuel stations along a route, which may help you compare a convenient stop with a detour. See the ACCC guide to fuel-price apps.

When is a lower price worth a detour?
Compare the actual price difference for the amount you plan to buy with the added driving. For example, a small per-litre or per-gallon saving may be outweighed by a long diversion; a station already on your route may be worthwhile even if it is not the absolute cheapest. There is no universal distance cutoff because the answer depends on the route, vehicle, fuel amount and price gap.
For a more realistic comparison, use a trip fuel-cost calculator if one is available and compare the route you would take to each station. AAA provides a US gas-cost calculator; the ACCC notes that navigation apps can show fuel stations on a route in Australia. Consider convenience and any eligibility requirement along with the displayed price.
