To find the cheapest practical fill-up, compare nearby stations for the fuel grade your vehicle requires, check that each listed price applies to your payment method and discounts, then weigh the savings against the extra distance. Treat app prices as leads—not guarantees—and verify a station’s sign or pump before making a special trip.
Compare the price you can actually pay
Start with the same fuel grade at every station. A lower price for a different grade is not a fair comparison, and using the wrong octane can be a costly mistake. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says to check your owner’s manual for the right octane; it notes that regular is recommended for most cars. Read the FTC’s fuel-economy guidance.
Next, check the conditions attached to the displayed price. Some listings distinguish cash from credit prices, and a reward or membership discount may require eligibility, a specific card, or other terms. Compare the price you qualify for, not the lowest number on screen. If a gas-rewards card is part of the calculation, read its fees and conditions; the FTC cautions that fine print can reduce the value of rewards.

United States: AAA for daily market context
AAA’s public gas-price site reports national, state, and local averages and says it updates daily using OPIS. Its about page says the survey covers up to 120,000 stations each day in cooperation with WEX. Averages help put local prices in context, but they are not a promise that a particular station will charge that price. See AAA Gas Prices and how AAA describes its survey.
United States and Canada: GasBuddy for station comparisons
GasBuddy documents searches by nearby location or ZIP/postal code. Results can be sorted by price, distance, or both, with filters for brand, rating, and amenities. Its help center also describes a cash-price view for some U.S. stations. See GasBuddy’s station-search instructions.

GasBuddy says station prices are reported by users and that app reports receive more weight than web reports. That is a description of its reporting system, not an independent audit showing how accurate a listing is. Check the timestamp or report details when available, and confirm the price if the trip depends on it. GasBuddy documents its search and filtering features and price-reporting process.
Where Waze gas-station results are available: compare along a route
Waze lets users set a preferred fuel type and brand, then sort gas-station results by price, distance, or brand. This can be useful when you want to compare stops on a planned drive rather than search only around your current location. Waze says prices may come from users, Google, or other partners; it does not verify third-party data and warns that prices may be inaccurate or out of date. United Kingdom: use Fuel Finder data through an app or website
The UK government makes Fuel Finder data available to third-party apps and websites. Forecourts must update prices within 30 minutes of a change, and the government provides a service to report discrepancies. The reporting process asks for the station and location, when you observed the issue, and what was wrong. Decide whether a cheaper station is worth the detour
Compare price per unit for the same grade, then account for the route and any payment or discount conditions. A station farther away can erase its apparent savings through extra driving or an inconvenient diversion. The better choice is the lowest practical price you can actually access—not necessarily the smallest number in the search results.

- Confirm the displayed price is for your required fuel grade.
- Check whether it requires cash, membership, or a particular reward or payment method.
- Compare the difference with the extra distance and route inconvenience.
- Look at the listing’s source or recency where the tool provides it.
- Before detouring, check the station sign or pump price.
Use averages and fuel type carefully
Daily averages can show whether a local listing looks unusually high or low, but they cannot establish the price at the pump. AAA’s price information also discusses E85’s energy content: citing the U.S. Energy Information Administration, AAA says E85 contains approximately 25 percent fewer BTUs by volume than conventional gasoline. That is an energy-content comparison, not a retail-price comparison or a guaranteed prediction of your vehicle’s fuel economy. Do not treat a lower per-gallon price alone as proof that E85 will cost less for your driving.
