How to Compare Cement Stocks Using Margins, Debt, and Valuation

A practical framework for comparing cement producers’ margins, leverage and valuation while accounting for different reporting periods, business mixes and capital plans.

To compare cement stocks, line up companies on the same reporting period and accounting basis, then assess three things together: operating margins, debt and liquidity, and valuation. Do not rank them by a headline EBITDA margin or net-debt ratio alone. Cement producers differ in how they define EBITDA, what assets and regions they consolidate, how much they are investing, and the markets in which they sell.

Start with comparable companies and periods

First decide which companies are genuinely comparable. A producer focused on one domestic market may face different fuel costs, freight, regulation, demand and currency exposure from a multinational with several building-materials businesses. Record each company’s geographic footprint, product mix, fiscal year-end, reporting currency, consolidation perimeter and accounting basis.

Use the latest periods that overlap as closely as possible. If one company reports a calendar year and another a different fiscal year, label the mismatch rather than treating the results as directly simultaneous. Use official annual reports, interim results and filings for the figures; market screens can help identify candidates, but verify their inputs against issuer disclosures.

Compare margins without assuming EBITDA means the same thing

Check the definition and the denominator

EBITDA margin is generally EBITDA divided by revenue, but companies may calculate or adjust EBITDA differently. Cementos Argos warned in its SEC filing for the year ended December 31, 2025: “EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA, as calculated by us, may not be comparable to similarly titled measures reported by other companies, including those in the cement industry.” Cementos Argos filing

Before comparing percentages, read each issuer’s definition and reconciliation. Confirm the exact EBITDA numerator, revenue denominator, reporting period and treatment of items such as impairment, restructuring or acquisitions. Where disclosures permit, also compare gross and operating margins, which provide additional views of performance.

Explain the margin, not just the ranking

A margin difference may reflect selling prices, sales volume, fuel and power costs, freight, clinker mix or higher-value products. Treat these as hypotheses to check against the company’s own explanations and operating data, not as automatic causes. A per-tonne measure can help separate unit economics from scale, but product and market mix still affect comparability.

For example, Ambuja Cements reported approximately ₹887 of operating EBITDA per metric tonne for existing assets in FY2025–26. That is a dated, company-reported illustration—not a sector benchmark or a directly comparable result for another producer. Ambuja Cements annual reports

Assess debt, liquidity and investment needs together

Use net debt to EBITDA as one measure

Net debt/EBITDA relates debt, after cash deductions under the issuer’s definition, to operating earnings. It can help indicate the scale of debt relative to earnings, but it is sensitive to the period chosen: a fall in EBITDA can push the ratio up even if debt has not changed. If EBITDA is negative or unusually high, the ratio may be unhelpful or misleading.

Issuer examples show why dates and definitions matter. Cementir Holding’s 2025 Annual Report highlights reported net financial debt/EBITDA of 0.1x. Ambuja’s FY2025–26 annual-report materials describe the company as debt-free. These are company disclosures for different reporting scopes and dates, not a directly comparable league table. Look beyond the headline ratio

Review the accounts and disclosures for the full picture:

  • Gross and net debt: Note the issuer’s definition of cash and which obligations it includes.
  • Liquidity and maturities: Check available cash or facilities and when borrowings fall due.
  • Interest burden: Compare interest expense and interest coverage, using consistent periods and definitions.
  • Cash generation: Assess operating cash flow after capital spending, not just EBITDA.
  • Investment cycle: Distinguish maintenance spending from expansion when reported. Expansion can weigh on near-term free cash flow while adding capacity, and also brings financing and execution risk.

Put valuation multiples in context

Valuation is only comparable when the market date, reporting period and calculation basis match. Market capitalization uses share price and shares outstanding; enterprise value also reflects debt and cash adjustments. State the share-price date and how enterprise value was calculated.

Measure What it helps show What to watch
P/E Price paid for reported or forecast earnings attributable to shareholders. It is affected by financing costs, taxes and exceptional items. Label trailing versus forecast earnings.
EV/EBITDA Enterprise value relative to EBITDA, incorporating debt in the valuation numerator. It inherits differences in issuer EBITDA definitions and adjustments.
P/B Equity value relative to reported book value. For an asset-heavy producer, it does not by itself show how effectively assets earn returns.

Do not mix a trailing share-price or enterprise-value input with forecast earnings or EBITDA without clearly labeling the period. Interpret any multiple alongside expected volume and price growth, margin trends, leverage, cash conversion and capital intensity. The available company materials do not establish synchronized current prices and market multiples, so they do not support a current “cheapest cement stock” ranking.

Use capacity and corporate changes to explain differences

Cement production requires substantial physical assets. Capacity, utilization, unit economics, energy sourcing, geography and product mix can help explain why two companies with similar margins face different growth prospects or investment requirements. Check whether a company is using existing plants efficiently or building capacity that has yet to contribute to earnings.

Ambuja reported consolidated cement capacity of 109 MTPA in its FY2025–26 reporting and set a target of 119 MTPA by FY2026–27 year-end. The target is a company objective, not a realized result. Its report also describes a proposed amalgamation of ACC and Orient Cement with Ambuja; verify the transaction’s current status before comparing group figures across periods. Build a comparison sheet before drawing a conclusion

For each company, record the same core fields and keep the source and period beside every figure:

  • Revenue, gross margin, operating margin and EBITDA margin, including the issuer’s EBITDA definition and adjustments.
  • Sales volume or per-tonne measures where reported, with product and market scope.
  • Gross debt, net debt, cash, maturities, interest expense and liquidity.
  • Net debt/EBITDA and the exact earnings period used.
  • Operating cash flow, capital spending and whether major projects are maintenance or expansion.
  • Market capitalization, enterprise value and valuation multiples, all tied to a stated price date and trailing or forecast period.
  • Capacity, utilization, geography, product mix and any acquisition or consolidation changes.

Refresh filings, share counts, market prices, enterprise-value adjustments and transaction status when preparing a current comparison. Dangote Cement’s investor-relations site lists its 2025 annual report and H1 2026 results among its company materials. Dangote Cement investor centre
