Compare athletic apparel companies on more than brand recognition or headline revenue growth. Review several years of demand, margins, inventory, sales channels, cash generation, debt and business risks; then assess valuation using share prices and financial assumptions from the same date. Company filings can show how a business is performing, but they cannot by themselves establish whether its stock is fairly priced.
Start with comparable periods and definitions
Before comparing results, make sure you are looking at like periods and like measures. Companies have different fiscal year-ends, report in different currencies and may define categories or channels differently. A fiscal-year result should not be ranked against another company’s quarter as if they covered the same period.
- Record the fiscal year or quarter, period-end date and currency for each figure.
- Separate reported growth from constant-currency growth, and check whether acquisitions, discontinued operations or other unusual items affect the comparison.
- Compare reported results with any adjusted measures so you can see what was excluded.
- Use several years and more than one quarter. Apparel sales are seasonal, so a single period can give a distorted impression.
Use company filings and earnings releases to verify definitions and explanations. The figures below illustrate how to read disclosures; they cover different periods and should not be used as a synchronized company ranking.
Assess the quality of revenue growth
A consolidated growth rate is a starting point, not a complete explanation of demand. Look at comparable sales where available, geography, product categories, currency effects and sales channels. Growth concentrated in one region or category may be less durable than broad-based demand, while currency movements can make reported growth differ from underlying performance.

For example, NIKE reported fiscal 2025 revenue of $46.3 billion, down 10% year over year, and NIKE Direct revenue fell 13%. Those figures point to a weaker period, but the causes and durability of the decline require reading the company’s explanations and examining its category, regional and channel results in NIKE’s fiscal 2025 earnings materials and Form 10-K for the year ended May 31, 2025.
Product mix also matters. Under Armour’s fiscal 2025 net revenue was 67% apparel, 23% footwear and 8% accessories, according to its fiscal 2025 Form 10-K. That mix helps explain what is driving its business, but it is not directly comparable with another company’s categories unless definitions and periods align.
Compare margins and what drives them
Gross margin shows how much revenue remains after the cost of products sold; operating margin also reflects operating expenses. Both help answer whether sales translate into profit, but neither should be read without the company’s explanation of pricing, promotions, product and freight costs, and channel mix.

NIKE reported fiscal 2025 gross margin of 42.7%, down 190 basis points. The company cited higher discounts, channel mix and inventory obsolescence reserves among the factors. These details matter: a margin decline can indicate pressure on pricing or costs, and the explanation helps distinguish temporary effects from a more persistent change in the business.

Other issuers show why period labels matter. adidas reported 2025 net sales of €24,811 million, operating profit of €2,056 million and gross margin of 51.6% in its 2025 Annual Report. lululemon reported fiscal 2025 net revenue of $11.103 billion, gross margin of 56.6% and operating margin of 19.9% in its fiscal 2025 results. These are company-reported figures from different periods, currencies and business definitions; they do not establish which company is more profitable on a comparable basis.
Watch whether margin changes persist across multiple periods and whether management attributes them to discounting, input costs, channel mix or other factors. For example, Under Armour reported fiscal 2026 revenue of approximately $5 billion, down 4%, and gross margin of 45.5%, down 240 basis points; it identified tariffs as the largest driver of the margin decline in its fiscal 2026 Form 10-K.

Check inventory against sales and markdowns
Inventory is most useful when considered alongside revenue trends, discounts and management’s explanation of how stock is positioned. Inventory growing faster than sales may signal a mismatch between supply and demand, though timing, product launches and seasonality can also affect balances. Look for disclosures about turnover, reserves for obsolete stock and markdowns, rather than treating one year-end balance as a verdict.
NIKE reported fiscal 2025 inventory of $7.5 billion, flat year over year. lululemon reported fiscal 2025 inventory of $1.4 billion, up 9%, and management expected inventory growth to exceed revenue growth during 2025. The companies differ in size, period and product mix, so the absolute balances are not a direct comparison. The direction of inventory relative to each company’s sales and the reasons management gives are the more useful signals.

Understand how products reach customers
Direct-to-consumer sales through a company’s stores and digital platforms can provide closer customer access, while wholesale partners offer distribution through third parties. Their economics, reach, returns and inventory exposure differ; a change in channel mix can therefore affect margins even when total sales are steady.
NIKE’s fiscal 2025 revenue included $18.8 billion from NIKE Direct and $25.9 billion from wholesale. Consider both the channel totals and their direction over time, then read how the company connects channel changes to margins, demand and inventory. A higher direct-sales share is not automatically better if it comes with weaker demand, higher costs or other trade-offs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test whether profits turn into cash
Compare operating cash flow with reported earnings, and account for capital spending, leases, debt and liquidity. Cash flow can be affected by inventory purchases, payment timing and other working-capital changes, so use multiple periods and read the cash-flow statement rather than relying on a single year’s total.
- Check whether operating cash flow is consistently positive and broadly supports reported earnings.
- Review capital spending and lease obligations to understand the cash required to operate stores, distribution and other infrastructure.
- Assess debt and available liquidity against upcoming obligations and the company’s ability to absorb weaker demand or higher costs.
This analysis helps distinguish profitable operations from a business that may need substantial cash to fund inventory or expansion. It is also relevant to resilience: a strong balance sheet can provide more room to manage a downturn, but it does not remove the risk of a weak product cycle or falling demand.

Identify the risks that could change the comparison
Review each company’s disclosures on demand, sourcing, tariffs and customs, foreign exchange, seasonality and product supply. The same risk can affect companies differently depending on where they source products, which markets they serve and how much pricing flexibility they have. lululemon’s filings discuss tariff and customs costs as margin risks, while Under Armour identified tariffs as the largest driver of its fiscal 2026 gross-margin decline.
Use management commentary as an explanation to test against later results, not as proof that a risk will pass or that a strategy is succeeding. NIKE’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K describes a strategy focused on sport, innovative products, consumer connections and digital and retail experiences. That is the company’s stated plan, not independent evidence of its effectiveness.
Separate business quality from stock valuation
A company can have strong products, growth or margins and still be an unattractive investment at a price that assumes too much future success. Conversely, weaker recent results do not alone show that a stock is expensive or cheap. Valuation requires market data and assumptions about future earnings or cash flows, not just operating figures from filings.
- Choose a common date for share prices and financial data.
- Use consistent valuation measures and definitions across companies, checking how each handles debt, cash, leases and unusual items.
- State the assumptions behind future growth, margins and cash generation, and consider how the identified risks could change them.
- Compare the resulting valuations with your assumptions rather than naming a winner based only on brand familiarity or a single operating metric.
The company results described here do not provide synchronized share prices, analyst estimates or comparable valuation multiples, so they do not support naming a cheapest or best stock. Refresh issuer filings and earnings releases for the latest fiscal period, and obtain market prices from one common date before making a valuation comparison.
