How to Compare 22K, 24K, and 18K Gold for Jewellery and Investment

18K is 75% gold, 22K about 91.7%, and 24K the highest-purity category in this comparison. Learn how alloy, design, fineness standards, bullion costs and resale terms affect which is right for jewellery or investment.

18K, 22K and 24K describe how much of an item’s metal is gold—not its weight, workmanship or guaranteed suitability for everyday wear. 18K is 75% gold, 22K is about 91.7%, and 24K is the highest-purity category in this comparison, but its exact fineness depends on the applicable standard and how the product is described. For jewellery, weigh purity against alloy, design and intended wear. For investment, compare bullion’s gold content and transaction costs with jewellery’s making charges and resale terms; the highest karat is not automatically the best purchase.

What 18K, 22K and 24K mean

Karat (often written as K or kt) expresses gold purity on a scale of 24 parts. An 18K item has 18 parts gold out of 24; a 22K item has 22 parts gold out of 24. The remainder is other metal or metals in the alloy. Fineness expresses the same idea as parts of precious metal per thousand: 750 means 750 parts gold per 1,000, or 75%.

Grade Gold content Common fineness mark What to check
18K 75% 750 Alloy composition, construction and whether the item suits its intended use.
22K About 91.7% 916 or 917 Purity mark and the local standard; 22K jewellery is common in some markets, including India.
24K Near-pure gold in ordinary carat descriptions Often 999 or finer in general descriptions; Indian standards distinguish 995 and 999 grades Whether it is described and certified as fine gold, standard gold, jewellery or bullion, and the applicable fineness specification.

The World Gold Council describes 18K as 75% gold and 22K as 91.7%, and explains that fineness reports precious-metal content in parts per thousand. “24K” is often used conversationally for pure gold, but practical refining limits and local specifications matter. In India, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) material lists 24KS standard gold at 995 or above and 24KF fine gold at 999 or above; these are distinct specifications, not interchangeable interpretations of a universal 24K legal grade. BIS also lists 18K(750), 22K(916) and 24KS(995) among grades permitted for hallmarking jewellery and artefacts. Do not confuse purity with weight. Gold is weighed in grams or troy ounces; one troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams. A heavier 18K piece can contain more total gold than a very light 22K piece. The karat tells you the proportion, not how much gold is present in the object.

How purity affects jewellery

Gold is naturally malleable. Jewellery makers commonly combine it with other metals to change its properties and appearance. An 18K alloy contains more non-gold metal than 22K; 22K contains more non-gold metal than 24K. The World Gold Council gives typical yellow-gold recipes of 75% gold for 18K and 91.7% for 22K, while emphasizing that these are examples rather than the only possible alloy recipes.

Alloy composition can change colour. Copper can contribute a pink or rose tone; white gold uses white metals and is often rhodium plated. A karat number alone therefore does not tell you the precise shade, the identity of every alloy metal, whether a white finish is plated, or how a particular piece will wear. Ask the seller for the alloy disclosure and care guidance, especially if you have a metal sensitivity. The available evidence does not support assuming that every item of one karat has the same hardness, colour or allergy profile.

Consideration 18K 22K 24K
Gold proportion 75% About 91.7% Highest purity in this comparison; verify the stated fineness
Other metals More alloy content than 22K and 24K Less alloy content than 18K, more than 24K Least alloy content when compared with lower-karat grades; confirm the actual product specification
Potential design implications Alloying offers more scope to alter colour and material characteristics Higher gold content; product performance still depends on alloy and construction Purity alone does not make it the best choice for frequent wear
What the karat cannot tell you The exact alloy recipe, durability of a particular design, plating, finish or suitability for your individual use.

These are trade-offs, not a universal ranking. The source material supports the relationship between alloying and malleability, but does not establish a particular durability result for every design. Construction, thickness, settings, moving parts, how often the piece is worn and the wearer’s activities also matter. Ask about repair and care, and inspect the item as a finished object rather than relying on karat as a proxy for all its qualities.

Choose a grade for how you will wear the piece

For jewellery worn often

Start with the item’s design and intended use, then compare its purity, alloy disclosure and construction. 18K may suit buyers who want a substantial gold proportion while also valuing colour and material characteristics shaped by alloying. That is not a guarantee that any specific 18K ring or chain will outlast a 22K version: construction and care remain relevant. Ask the jeweller how the particular design is intended to be worn and maintained.

For a higher gold proportion in jewellery

22K contains more gold by proportion than 18K and is used for jewellery in some markets, including India. That makes it a meaningful choice when higher gold content is a priority, but it does not settle questions about design, strength, colour or resale. Compare actual pieces and their stated composition instead of assuming every 22K item behaves alike.

For maximum purity rather than a default daily-wear choice

24K offers the highest purity of these three categories, subject to the item’s actual fineness specification. It is not automatically the most practical choice for an item intended for frequent wear. Establish whether the seller means fine gold, standard gold or another product specification, and consider the design and use. For a simple investment holding, bullion may be a more direct way to buy a stated gold quantity than jewellery that also carries workmanship and retail charges.

For a colour or finish preference

Do not select a karat solely by a colour name. Yellow, rose and white appearances depend on alloy choices and, in the case of white gold, may involve rhodium plating. Ask whether a finish is plated, what alloy metals are used and what upkeep the seller expects. A seller’s product-specific description is more informative than a general claim that one karat always has a certain colour.

For investment, compare the product—not just the karat

Gold exposure can come from bullion bars or coins, or from jewellery bought partly for its gold content. These are not equivalent transactions. The World Gold Council describes bars and coins as direct investment forms. It says investment bars typically have 99.5%–99.99% purity, while bullion coins commonly range from 91.67% (22 carat) to 99.99% (24 carat). Those ranges describe the categories in that guidance; they do not establish the specifications of a particular item or a guarantee of return.

Purchase type What the cited guidance establishes Costs and practical checks
Investment bar Typically 99.5%–99.99% purity. The World Gold Council lists denominations of 1, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 1,000 grams, as well as 1, 10, 100 and 400 troy ounces. Compare the premium over spot, product fineness, dealer terms, delivery, storage and insurance.
Bullion coin Purity commonly ranges from 91.67% (22 carat) to 99.99% (24 carat), according to the World Gold Council. Check the coin’s stated gold content and fineness, premium, delivery and the terms for selling it later.
Investment jewellery The Council’s Retail Gold Investment Principles characterize it as high-purity jewellery, excluding plated items, whose price is primarily determined by gold content. Purity may range from 21 carat to 999.9 depending on the market. Separate gold value from workmanship and other retail charges; verify the seller’s buyback or exchange rules and likely resale spread.

Under the Council’s investment-jewellery guidance, 18K should not casually be presented as the standard for investment jewellery: the described category is high-purity and can vary by market from 21 carat to 999.9. That does not mean 18K jewellery has no gold value. It means a buyer should not assume it meets this category’s stated high-purity profile or that its retail price will be recovered on resale.

Bars and coins also carry costs beyond the metal. The World Gold Council says buyers pay a premium over spot and should account for delivery, storage and insurance. A quoted gold price alone is therefore not a complete comparison. Ask for the total amount payable, what quantity and fineness it buys, and the cost and conditions of getting the metal delivered, held securely and sold later.

For jewellery, separate the stated net precious-metal weight from the rest of the item and from the retail price. Workmanship and other charges can make jewellery cost more than its gold content; the seller’s buyback or exchange policy affects what happens at resale. Local taxes, retail charges and resale policies depend on the market and are not established by the cited guidance as universal figures. Request the actual terms where you are buying rather than applying a single assumed deduction.

Compare the gold content and the full price

A useful first comparison is the quantity of gold represented by the item, not its total gross weight. If the seller states the net gold-bearing weight and purity, the arithmetic is:

Approximate pure-gold content = net gold-bearing weight × stated gold percentage.

For example, a hypothetical 10-gram item made to 18K contains approximately 7.5 grams of gold by this calculation; a hypothetical 10-gram 22K item contains about 9.17 grams. This comparison assumes the stated weight is net metal weight and the stated purity is accurate. It does not value stones, workmanship or other components, and it is not a quote for what a dealer would pay to buy the item back.

Compare each offer using the same questions:

  • What is the net precious-metal weight, excluding stones or other non-metal components where applicable?
  • What purity and fineness are stated, and which local standard or hallmark supports that claim?
  • What is the total price, and which part is attributable to gold versus workmanship or other retail charges?
  • For bullion, what premium over spot, delivery, storage and insurance costs apply?
  • What are the written buyback, exchange or resale terms, including any spread or deductions?
  • What local taxes or other charges apply to this particular transaction?

This lets you compare unlike products without treating a higher karat as an automatic bargain. A lower-purity, heavier item can contain more gold than a lighter, higher-purity one; a jewellery price can include value not captured by its gold content; and an investment bar can still cost more than spot because of its premium and associated costs.

Hallmarks, invoices and checks before paying

Hallmarking systems and legal requirements vary by country. The World Gold Council notes that hallmark traditions and marks differ; the United States may use product signage or verbal disclosure, while the United Kingdom has its own hallmarking requirements. Do not apply one country’s markings or legal expectations worldwide. Check the rules and verification method for the place where you are buying.

If you are buying in India

BIS materials list hallmarkable gold jewellery and artefact grades including 18K(750), 22K(916) and 24KS(995). BIS says the current hallmark includes the BIS logo, purity in caratage and fineness, and a six-character alphanumeric HUID. Its consumer guidance recommends checking the actual weight and the hallmark and purity marks. Because rules and implementation can change, verify current BIS information and applicable local requirements when making a purchase.

Ask for an invoice that identifies each hallmarked precious-metal article separately, states its net precious-metal weight and purity in carat or fineness, and identifies hallmarking charges. Keep that invoice with the item. Use official hallmark-verification channels applicable in India to check the mark rather than treating a verbal assurance or a karat stamp alone as conclusive.

BIS consumer-protection material says a customer is entitled to compensation if hallmarked jewellery is found below its marked purity, subject to the stated calculation and testing charges. If you believe an item is under-purity, retain the invoice and follow the current official testing and complaint process; the amount and procedure are not reproduced here because the applicable details can change.

In any market

  • Read the stated karat and fineness mark, and confirm what the mark means under local rules.
  • Ask for a written description of the item’s purity, net precious-metal weight and alloy or plating disclosures available from the seller.
  • Check the invoice against the item and the quoted total, including separately stated charges where applicable.
  • For bullion, obtain documentation of fineness and weight and clear delivery, storage and sale terms.
  • Keep the invoice, certificates and relevant seller terms in a safe place for future verification or resale.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Calling 24K one exact universal specification. “24K” commonly signals the highest-purity category, but product fineness and standards differ. India, for example, distinguishes 24KS at 995 or above from 24KF at 999 or above.
  • Assuming more karats always means a better investment. Jewellery price includes more than gold content, while bars and coins have premiums and other costs. Compare the product and transaction terms.
  • Using total item weight as gold weight. Stones, settings or other components may contribute to gross weight. Ask for net precious-metal weight.
  • Assuming all pieces of one karat share the same colour or wear characteristics. Alloy recipes and construction vary; 18K and 22K examples are typical compositions, not fixed recipes for every item.
  • Treating a stamp as a complete purchase record. Read the applicable hallmark, obtain an itemized invoice and use local official verification channels where available.
  • Ignoring resale terms until later. Ask how a seller calculates buyback or exchange value before purchase; retail price and eventual resale proceeds are not necessarily the same.

A practical decision rule

Choose 18K when its 75% gold content and the particular alloy, appearance and design suit your jewellery priorities. Consider 22K when a higher gold proportion matters and the item’s construction and local verification satisfy you. Choose a 24K product only after confirming its actual fineness and that the product form suits the purpose; it is the purity leader here, not an automatic everyday-wear winner. For investment, compare clearly specified bullion with any jewellery on net gold content, premium or retail charges, delivery and storage needs, and the exit terms. The best choice is the one whose verified specification and full costs match how you intend to use or sell it.
