How to Collect Payments on Google Forms: 3 Practical Options

Google Forms collects answers, not payments. Here’s how to connect hosted checkout with a payment add-on or a Stripe or PayPal Payment Link.

Google Forms cannot take payments on its own: it has no built-in payment field or checkout. To collect money alongside a form, use a payment add-on such as Payable Forms, put a Stripe or PayPal Payment Link in the form, or move to a form builder with native payment features. Use an add-on when the total depends on answers; use a payment link for a simple fixed amount.

What Google Forms can—and cannot—do

Google Forms collects responses and can send them to a linked Google Sheet. It does not process card payments, provide a native Stripe or PayPal checkout, or include a payment question type. Google’s Forms add-ons extend the form editor; they do not add a payment screen to the respondent-facing form. See Google’s Forms add-on documentation.

In a payment workflow, the roles are separate: Forms gathers the information, a processor handles the transaction, and an add-on or payment link connects the two. Even if an add-on sends someone to checkout immediately after submission, the payment happens on a hosted checkout page—not inside Google Forms.

Option Best for Pricing and tracking
Payable Forms add-on Totals that vary by answer, such as ticket tier, quantity, or extras Advertises hosted checkout and payment-status updates in a linked Sheet. The Marketplace listing says “Free of charge with paid features”; check current plan limits and fees.
Stripe Payment Link A fixed fee, deposit, or donation when manual matching is acceptable No add-on is needed; payment and form records may need to be reconciled manually. Stripe’s US payment-links page lists a starting rate of 2.9% + $0.30 per successful charge; rates and availability vary. Details.
PayPal Payment Link A fixed payment when customers prefer PayPal or its available checkout methods No add-on is needed, but matching payments to responses may be manual. PayPal’s US page displayed 3.49% + $0.10 for PayPal/Venmo and 2.99% + $0.10 for cards and Apple Pay when checked; fees can change. Details.
Dedicated form or commerce platform Native checkout, recurring billing, inventory, coupons, or fuller order management Features, pricing, and processor support depend on the platform; compare them for your requirements.

Payable Forms advertises connections to Stripe, PayPal, and Square, plus calculation from form answers and Sheet status updates. Review its Google Workspace Marketplace listing and product details before choosing it. These are vendor-advertised features, so verify the functions and plan limits available to your account.

Square Reader for magstripe (USB-C)
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Get set up quickly with no long-term commitments. Download the Square Point of Sale app for free, create an account, and start taking payments anywhere.
  • Run your business all in one place with the free Square Point of Sale app. Track your sales, manage inventory, accept tips, send receipts digitally, and more.
  • Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.

Set up a payment add-on for variable totals

This approach is useful when a registration or order total depends on several choices. For example, a form might charge $25 for standard registration, $50 for premium registration, and add $15 for lunch or $20 for a T-shirt. A suitable add-on can map answer choices to prices and direct the respondent to hosted checkout.

  1. Build the form. Collect the information needed to identify and fulfill each order, such as name, email, selection, and quantity. Make prices and optional charges clear to respondents.
  2. Link a response Sheet. In Google Forms, open the Responses tab and create or select a spreadsheet. Google describes Forms and its response data at Google Forms.
  3. Install the add-on. Find Payable Forms in the Workspace Marketplace, review its requested permissions, and install it if your account allows it. The listing says it can view and manage Forms, create or update Apps Script projects, and access Sheets. A school or business administrator may need to approve Marketplace apps.
  4. Configure the price rules. Open the add-on from the form editor; its menu label can change. Assign amounts to paid answer choices and configure any supported fees or checkout options. Payable advertises taxes, shipping, handling fees, notifications, and test mode, but confirm what is available for your account and plan.
  5. Connect a processor. Payable advertises Stripe, PayPal, and Square connections. Check that your processor account, country, and currency are supported before publishing.
  6. Test the full transaction. Verify the calculated total, hosted checkout, processor record, respondent confirmation, and Sheet response and payment status. Test an unsuccessful or abandoned checkout as well as a successful payment.
  7. Publish and monitor. Share the form after testing. Treat the Sheet as a response-tracking tool, not as the payment ledger: check the processor for transactions, refunds, and disputes.

In the advertised flow, a respondent submits the form, the add-on calculates the amount, and the respondent is sent to hosted checkout. The processor handles payment, and the add-on can return payment status to the connected Sheet. The exact synchronization behavior should be verified in a test using your own form and processor.

Use a Stripe Payment Link for a fixed amount

A Stripe link is the simplest no-add-on route when everyone owes the same amount. Stripe’s Dashboard instructions are to open Payment Links, select New, choose or add a product, set the price, and create the link. Follow the current Stripe setup instructions, then put the link in the form description, a relevant section, or the confirmation message. Stripe describes Payment Links as hosted, no-code checkout for options including one-time payments and subscriptions; check feature limits for your setup at Stripe Payment Links.

A link does not automatically join a payment to a particular Google Forms response. Someone may submit without paying, pay without submitting, or use a different email address at checkout. Ask for the same email in both places and include an order or registration reference where possible. Mark submissions as pending until the processor confirms payment.

Use a PayPal Payment Link

PayPal offers another hosted-checkout option. From a PayPal Business account, create a Payment Link, enter the product or service details and price, set any relevant checkout options, and generate the link. Add it to the form or its confirmation message and test it in a private browser window. PayPal says its links can be shared as a URL or QR code without a website or coding; available payment methods depend on the account, country, and product. See PayPal’s US Payment Links page and its developer overview.

As with a Stripe link, a generic PayPal link does not by itself connect a transaction to a specific form response. Use a consistent email address and reference, then reconcile payment records against submissions.

Where to put a payment link in the form

  • Form description: Put the link in the instructions if respondents should pay while completing the form. A payment made before submission can leave you with a transaction but no matching response.
  • Section or question description: Use this when a particular path has a fixed payment option. Make it clear which amount applies to that choice.
  • Confirmation message: Use this when respondents should submit their details first and pay afterward. A confirmation screen is not proof of payment: a respondent can close it, skip the link, or encounter a failed checkout.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Keep card details out of the form

Do not ask respondents to type card numbers, expiration dates, or security codes into ordinary Google Forms fields. Send them to the processor’s hosted checkout instead. Explain where payment takes place and whether submitting the form reserves a place or whether confirmation depends on a successful payment.

Before installing an add-on, have a Workspace administrator review its Marketplace listing, privacy policy, terms, and requested permissions if your organization has approval rules. A third-party add-on is not the same as a Google-built payment feature.

Fix common payment problems

  • The add-on is missing or installation is blocked: Check that you are using the form editor and ask your Workspace administrator whether third-party Marketplace apps are restricted.
  • The payment link is not clickable: Recheck the copied URL and placement, then test the published form in a separate browser session.
  • The form was submitted but payment was not made: Mark the response as pending, follow up using the contact details collected, and do not fulfill the order until the processor confirms payment.
  • Payment was made but there is no matching response: Compare the processor’s transaction details with the respondent’s email or reference. For future orders, require a reference and reconcile regularly.
  • The total is wrong: Check the price mapping for each answer and every branching path. Retest after changing choices, labels, or pricing; use an add-on rather than a generic link when totals vary by response.
  • The payment status is missing or delayed: Confirm the transaction in the processor before changing a Sheet row or fulfilling an order. Some Stripe payment methods may take between two and fourteen days to confirm, according to its Payment Links documentation.
  • A refund or chargeback occurs: Handle it in the payment processor or connected system, then update your records; a Google Sheet alone is not a payment ledger.

When Google Forms is no longer enough

Choose a dedicated form or commerce platform if you need checkout as a native step, inventory controls, coupons, customer accounts, recurring billing, or more complete order and payment reporting. Before switching, check recurring-payment support, failed-renewal handling, tax and shipping features, available processors, and total costs. Depending on the service, costs may include processor fees, add-on or subscription charges, currency conversion, refunds or disputes, and staff time spent reconciling records.

Payment methods, currencies, seller protections, and fees vary by processor, country, account, and transaction. The fee figures above are US-page examples, not universal rates. Verify current terms for your location and account before setting prices.
