If your deposit has already been surrendered to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), start your refund claim with the bank—not by applying directly to SBP. Submit the claim through the branch where the account was opened or the instrument was payable. The bank forwards it for SBP verification and, if approved, SBP returns the funds to the bank for credit to you.

What is an unclaimed deposit?

SBP’s consumer FAQ uses “unclaimed deposit” for eligible deposits and financial instruments that have remained inactive for the applicable period and have been surrendered to SBP. The categories described by SBP include deposits, cheques, drafts, instruments and bills of exchange. See SBP’s consumer FAQ and its dedicated unclaimed-deposits page.

There is a conflict among SBP’s published guidance on the inactivity period: the dedicated page says fifteen years, while the FAQ and a 2006 master circular state ten years or more. The pages reviewed do not explain the difference or identify a later rule that resolves it. Ask your bank which period applies to your account or instrument rather than relying on a calculation from either figure. The older circular also instructed banks to give notice by registered post three months after reaching its stated ten-year period; confirm current notice requirements with your bank. A dormant account is not automatically an unclaimed deposit eligible for this refund process. SBP’s FAQ says deposits in the name of a minor, government or court, and deposits under litigation, are exempt from surrender.

How can I claim my unclaimed deposit or instrument?

  1. Contact the relevant bank branch. Start at the branch where the account was opened or the instrument was payable. If that branch has closed or moved, contact the nearest branch of the same bank. If the bank merged with or was acquired by another bank, contact the nearest branch of the acquiring bank.
  2. Submit the claim to the bank. SBP’s refund procedure lists an original signed application containing the account details and a copy of a valid CNIC or equivalent. Ask the bank if it requires any additional current forms or supporting records.
  3. Let the bank forward the case. The branch manager sends the claim and supporting documents for SBP processing. SBP verifies the claim and, if approved, refunds the surrendered amount to the bank or development finance institution (DFI) for credit to the applicant.

SBP says it does not entertain an unclaimed-refund application sent directly by the customer; the bank or DFI must submit the case. The branch route and processing steps are set out in SBP’s procedure and consumer FAQ.

What documents are needed if the account holder has died?

The standard route for a deceased account holder requires a succession certificate issued by a competent court. There is a limited alternative for claims of Rs. 100,000 or less: under SBP’s 2012 circular, a bank or DFI may forward a claim without a succession certificate if it is satisfied about the legal heirs and receives the required safeguards.

Claim situation Succession certificate Documents and conditions
Deceased holder; claim of Rs. 100,000 or less May be waived for the bank’s forwarding of the case under the 2012 circular; the bank must satisfy itself about the heirs. Indemnity bond signed by all legal heirs, two personal guarantees, application from all legal heirs, copies of heirs’ CNICs and the deceased holder’s death certificate. SBP’s current procedure page specifically mentions a Rs. 100 non-judicial stamp paper bond for this route. Confirm the bank’s current format and stamp requirements before preparing documents.
Deceased holder; claim above Rs. 100,000 Required under the 2012 circular. Follow the bank’s current document requirements for the succession-certificate route.

The Rs. 100,000 threshold and safeguards come from SBP’s 2012 circular; the stamp-paper detail appears in SBP’s refund procedure. The lower-claim option is not an automatic waiver: the bank decides whether the heirs and supporting documents satisfy the conditions for forwarding the case.

  • Which branch should handle the claim if the original branch closed, moved, or belongs to a bank that merged or was acquired.
  • The required application format and identity documents, plus any bank-specific supporting records.
  • For a deceased holder, whether the claim qualifies for the Rs. 100,000-or-less route and the bank’s current bond, guarantee and stamp-paper requirements.
